LSU baseball hit the practice field this afternoon to get ready for Friday’s Baton Rouge Regional opener against Texas Southern. Coach Paul Mainieri has yet to decide who will start against the SWAC Tournament champions….

Mainieri says he will announce a starting pitcher on Thursday.

Texas Southern comes into the Baton Rouge Regional with a 20-32 record. They have a team ERA over eight against nonconference opponents.

The other two teams in the Baton Rouge Regional are Southeastern Louisiana and Rice. The Owls have struggled on the mound as well as they have a team ERA of 5.10. The Lions are speedy on the base paths with 110 steals.

CBS has released a partial TV schedule for the upcoming season. Once again the network plans on a doubleheader for the Saturday that LSU plays Alabama, televising one game at 2:30 and the other at 7 PM. Which means the Tigers-Crimson Tide game could be televised at 7 PM, but we won’t know for sure until October. Also, CBS says it will televise the Arkansas-Missouri match-up on the Friday after Thanksgiving, so that means it’s likely LSU-Texas A-and-M in Tiger Stadium will be November 25th.

LSU-Alexandria stayed alive in the NAIA softball championships by beating Davenport, Michigan two to nothing. It’s the first time the Generals have ever won two games in the NAIA softball World Series. LSU-A will play again tomorrow afternoon.

A Texas Girl Scout group needed help from federal, state and local officers after they were stranded at Saline Bayou in Natchitoches Parish. Medical investigator for Alzheimer’s research, Dr. Patrick Gahan with LSU’s Pennington Biomedical Research Center says one reason for the uptick is that people are living longer.

According to the CDC, Alzheimer’s disease is the sixth leading cause of death in the U.S. Gahan says another reason for the increase in cases could be that doctors are becoming more aware of the degenerative disease.

Gahan says this is the most costly disease we face as a country, and it has no treatment options. He says Pennington has multiple drug trials, and they’re looking for patients over the age of 50 with a family history of Alzheimer’s to participate.

The Humane Society of Louisiana is offering a 1200 dollar reward for any information leading to the arrest of a man accused of killing a pit bull by dragging it behind a truck on Sunday night in Slidell. Director Jeff Dorson says a passing car pulled over and asked the man what happened, he claimed it was an accident, unchained the dog and fled the scene without the pit bull.

To report any information on this case, visit the Humane Society of Louisiana’s website. Dorson says they are not sure if the man intentionally dragged the dog or if he had it tied up in the back of the pickup truck and it jumped out.

Dorson says if convicted, this man could face fines up to 25-thousand dollars and up to 10 years in jail. He says seeing an animal die like this is extremely upsetting.

A Senate Judiciary Committee rejects a proposal to end sanctuary policies in Louisiana. The measure by Denham Springs Representative Valerie Hodges would end policies that discourage law enforcement from contacting immigration authorities if they encounter an illegal immigrant. The proposal would prevent cities with such policies from receiving state grants. New Orleans Senator JP Morrell says he couldn’t see how this bill would improve public safety, as proponents argued it would.

Proponents claimed the measure has the support of law enforcement, but Morrell noted no police officer came to testify in support of the bill. One supporter even argued that if an illegal immigrant gets arrested with no identification, police officers would let them go. Morrell says that’s nonsense.

New Orleans Police Superintendent Michael Harrison spoke in opposition, saying it’s all about building trust and providing public safety. He notes that New Orleans is not a sanctuary city and has federally approved policies in place. He says if this bill passed, it would hurt their ability to maintain public safety.

A 23-year-old Thibodaux woman has been arrested after allegedly forcing her way into an apartment and attempting to use a hacksaw blade on her ex-girlfriend. David Melancon with the Thibodaux Police Department says Lechelsea Jenkins pushed passed a male in the home to get to the victim and began attacking her. He says Jenkins followed the victim to a back room, punched the wall and broke a TV.

Melancon says Jenkins cut the male with the hacksaw blade while trying to stop her from following the victim. He says Jenkins continued to chase the woman outside…

A Texas Girl Scout group is safe after being rescued from Saline Bayou In Natchitoches Parish. Adam Einck with the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries says they received an alert from friends and family around 9pm on May 28th that a kayaking group of three adults and six juveniles had never returned to their destination..:

The LSU Tigers begin preparations today for this weekend’s Baton Rouge Regional. The Tigers first game is Friday at 2:30 against Texas Southern at Alex Box Stadium. LSU has won 11 straight and Coach Paul Mainieri likes the mindset of his team….

The Cajuns baseball team’s streak of reaching the NCAA Tournament has ended at four. UL Lafayette’s RPI of 58 didn’t make the cut.

Louisiana Tech also failed to make the NCAA Tournament. Going two and barbeque in the Conference USA Tournament hurt their chances. And McNeese State not winning the Southland Tourney also kept them out.

The LSU softball team is on its way to Oklahoma City for a third consecutive year, the home of the Women’s College World Series. The Tigers will face UCLA at 1:30 on Thursday.

And LSU-Alexandria will play Davenport, Michigan this afternoon in the NAIA Softball Championships. The Generals need to win to stay alive and they beat Davenport last Friday four to nothing.

The SEC Spring meetings begin today in Destin, Florida. Auburn athletic director Jay Jacobs has floated the idea of moving Auburn to the SEC East. We’ll see if there’s any more talk about that. LSU Athletic Director Joe Alleva would like to see the SEC relax its rules regarding in-stadium beer sales at football games and we’ll see if there’s any more discussion on that.

The LHSAA Executive Committee begins its annual summer meeting in Baton Rouge. The association will award future championship sites. Alexandria and Lake Charles are bidding to host both the boys and girls state basketball championships.

A bill to change the name of the Louisiana School for Math, Science and Arts in Natchitoches has sparked a big debate. Delhi Senator Francis Thompson’s proposal would change the school’s name to Jimmy D. Long Sr. Louisiana School for Math, Science and the Arts. Long served as a state representative from 1968 to 2000. Thompson says the late lawmaker was dedicated to creating the school in 1983…

Democratic Caucus Chairman Gene Reynolds of Minden says he’ll meet with Republican leaders to see what can be done in the final days. He says with only 41 votes in the House, it’s hard for Democrats to get anything through the process.

Big news in the golf world as Tiger Woods was arrested in Florida on a DUI charge. The Palm County Sheriff’s office says golf’s former number one player in the world was booked into the county jail at around 7 AM. Police records indicate Woods was arrested in Jupiter.

And longtime Sports Illustrated writer Frank Deford has died at the age of 78. President Obama presented Deford with the National Humanities Medal in 2013.

An Alabama man was killed in a skydiving accident in Slidell on Sunday. St. Tammany deputies say 53-year-old Benjamin Leroy Crowell was training another person when he lost consciousness shortly after jumping out of a airplane. Witnesses say the two men hit the ground hard. The trainee was airlifted to a hospital and his condition is not known.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are concerned about an increase in cryptosporidium in public swimming pools. It’s a parasite that can cause diarrhea. The CDC’s Michele Hlvasa (Vah-sah) says people get infected when they swallow dirty water…

Thousands are waking up this morning in the dark after severe storms knocked out power across north Louisiana. Entergy reports almost 10-thousand outages in northeast Louisiana. SWEPCO is reporting 25-thousand are without power along I-49 in northwest Louisiana. And State Police say one person was killed when a tree fell on a car in DeSoto Parish.

There’s a week and a half left in the regular session and there is a major disagreement between Governor John Bel Edwards and House Republicans over the proposed spending plan for next fiscal year. Publisher of La-politics-dot-com Jeremy Alford says the GOP-led House passed a budget that allocates 97.5-percent of available revenues and Democrats want to spend more….
