Alzheimer’s disease deaths have increased 55 percent in the last 15 years, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Medical investigator for Alzheimer’s research, Dr. Patrick Gahan with LSU’s Pennington Biomedical Research Center says one reason for the uptick is that people are living longer.
According to the CDC, Alzheimer’s disease is the sixth leading cause of death in the U.S. Gahan says another reason for the increase in cases could be that doctors are becoming more aware of the degenerative disease.

Gahan says this is the most costly disease we face as a country, and it has no treatment options. He says Pennington has multiple drug trials, and they’re looking for patients over the age of 50 with a family history of Alzheimer’s to participate.

The Humane Society of Louisiana is offering a 1200 dollar reward for any information leading to the arrest of a man accused of killing a pit bull by dragging it behind a truck on Sunday night in Slidell. Director Jeff Dorson says a passing car pulled over and asked the man what happened, he claimed it was an accident, unchained the dog and fled the scene without the pit bull.
To report any information on this case, visit the Humane Society of Louisiana’s website. Dorson says they are not sure if the man intentionally dragged the dog or if he had it tied up in the back of the pickup truck and it jumped out.
Dorson says if convicted, this man could face fines up to 25-thousand dollars and up to 10 years in jail. He says seeing an animal die like this is extremely upsetting.

A Senate Judiciary Committee rejects a proposal to end sanctuary policies in Louisiana. The measure by Denham Springs Representative Valerie Hodges would end policies that discourage law enforcement from contacting immigration authorities if they encounter an illegal immigrant. The proposal would prevent cities with such policies from receiving state grants. New Orleans Senator JP Morrell says he couldn’t see how this bill would improve public safety, as proponents argued it would.
Proponents claimed the measure has the support of law enforcement, but Morrell noted no police officer came to testify in support of the bill. One supporter even argued that if an illegal immigrant gets arrested with no identification, police officers would let them go. Morrell says that’s nonsense.
New Orleans Police Superintendent Michael Harrison spoke in opposition, saying it’s all about building trust and providing public safety. He notes that New Orleans is not a sanctuary city and has federally approved policies in place. He says if this bill passed, it would hurt their ability to maintain public safety.

A 23-year-old Thibodaux woman has been arrested after allegedly forcing her way into an apartment and attempting to use a hacksaw blade on her ex-girlfriend. David Melancon with the Thibodaux Police Department says Lechelsea Jenkins pushed passed a male in the home to get to the victim and began attacking her. He says Jenkins followed the victim to a back room, punched the wall and broke a TV.
Melancon says Jenkins cut the male with the hacksaw blade while trying to stop her from following the victim. He says Jenkins continued to chase the woman outside…
Melancon says they suspect the motive was jealousy. He says Jenkins fled the scene when authorities arrived but then returned and was arrested.

A Texas Girl Scout group is safe after being rescued from Saline Bayou In Natchitoches Parish.
