Congressman Garret Graves surprised a lot of people announcing yesterday he will not seek re-election. Political commentator Bernie Pinsonat says he was not surprised by the decision as Graves’ current 6th District was modified for the upcoming race and will stretch from Baton Rouge to Shreveport. This change makes the district a majority-minority.

Daniel Callihan the man accused of killing Callie Brunett of Loranger and her three-year-old daughter Erin admitted to reporters in Mississippi that he did it…adding that he was sober, but was had been on and off of Lexapro, a medication used to treat anxiety and depression. Callihan said he’s diagnosed with borderline personality disorder and he believes it was the side effects of the drug for his actions.

The Supreme Court has struck down a ban on rapid-fire bump stocks, an attachment to a semi-automatic rifle that allows a rate of fire comparable to a machine gun. Mel Bridges has more.

The man accused of killing Callie Brunett of Loranger and her three-year-old daughter tells reporters he did it. In Mississippi, Friday afternoon, Daniel Callihan he confessed and blamed his medication for his actions.

Lexapro is a medication used to treat anxiety and depression. Callihan is facing multiple charges including capital murder, sexual battery and armed robbery. A second suspect 32 year old Victoria Cox has also been charged in the case.

Meanwhile, Shreveport police have arrested two people in connection with the deadly shooting of an elderly man that happened just south of Benton on Thursday. He had just gotten out of the car in his driveway when someone in a hoodie shot him several times. Detectives have arrested 22 year old Delandro Fleming as the shooter and say 23 year old Destiny Landers drove the getaway car. Both are charged with first degree murder.

Law enforcement have arrested some men they say had planned to ambush and kill Baton Rouge Police Officers. BRPD Special Investigations Detectives and the US Marchal’s Fugitive Task Force executed arrest warrants apprehending a 25 year old Dwayne Williams, 20 year old Bryson Lumbers and 18 year old Yazavier Gaines, along with a 16 year old. Authorities say the suspects had consistently posted photos of firearms equipped with machine gun conversion devices on social media.

A second person has been arrested, 32-year-old Victoria Cox as an accomplice in the murder of a Loranger woman and the kidnapping of her two daughters and murder of one. Daniel Callihan was arrested Thursday for his involvement in the murder of Callie Brunett, the mother of the two girls. He was apprehended in Mississippi. Jackson Police Chief Joseph Wade says he can’t confirm at this time that cages found at the crime scene were used for human trafficking.

Baton Rouge Congressman Garret Graves says he’s not running for re-election. This after he said he was planning to run again despite the 6th congressional district lines being re-drawn to create a second-majority Black district. It was possible he might run in another district against a fellow Republicans but on Friday he announced his decision not to run.

Pelicans assistant coach Fred Vinson is joining Monty Williams’ Detroit Pistons staff after 14 years in New Orleans where he previously worked under Williams. Vinson is one of the NBA’s highest regarded shooting coaches and has helped improved the shooting of players like Lonzo Ball, Herb Jones, and Brandon Ingram.

Grambling men’s basketball coach Donte’ Jackson has been extended through the 2029 season. Jackson and the Tigers are coming off a successful season earning their first ever SWAC tournament title and NCAA Tournament appearance. In seven seasons at Grambling, Jackson has claimed three regular season SWAC crowns and three Conference Coach of the Year Awards.

Houma Representative Jerome Zerengue (rhymes with merengue) says the diversion, which would redirect some of the Mississippi’s sediment-heavy water into a new channel and guide it into the Barataria Basin, has years of research behind it.

If successful, the sediment from the nearly $3 billion diversion will settle and gradually restore land in the basin that’s been disappearing for decades. Zerengue says this isn’t an invasive procedure since the diversion is just continuing the work of Mother Nature.

Opponents of the diversion say any benefits the diversion would bring are outweighed by the introduction of non-salty water into brackish and saltwater areas. Zerengue says even if that’s the case, something has to be done to save our coasts.

The project’s stop-work order was partially lifted on Thursday after officials agreed to stay opposing litigation.

Multiple agencies are working on the case, including the FBI and the National Bureau of Investigation.  (Jackson Police Chief Joseph) Wade says while they can’t confirm the crime scene is possibly linked to human trafficking, they do want to know why Callahan brought the young girls to Jackson.

Distracted driving continues to be a safety concern in Louisiana. Dashcam footage of a June 10 accident in Slidell seems to show an SUV driver distracted by dogs in the vehicle crash into a motorcycle Fortunately, the motorcyclist escaped with minor injuries.

Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff Daniel Edwards expressed frustration over the Amber Alert issued for the girls Thursday. He says the alert issued by Louisiana State Police came three hours after it was requested Thursday morning.

 

 

While Governor Jeff Landry accomplished many of his goals in the first regular legislative session of his term, he was not able to gain enough support for the constitutional convention he wanted. Political analyst, Bernie Pinsonat says the only way he believes it would happen is if the Governor can drum up enough public support to pressure the Senate to go along with the House and call the convention.

An alleged accomplice has been arrested in connection to the murder of Callie Brunett of Loranger and the kidnapping of her two daughters and the subsequent murder of the three-year-old daughter. Jackson police report, 32-year-old Victoria Cox been arrested. The children were found along with suspect Daniel Callahan in Jackson, Mississippi Thursday afternoon. Jackson PD has also arrested a second person allegedly involved, 32-year-old Victoria Cox. Police believe she has a romantic relationship with Callahan. Cox is in custody and being questioned by Jackson PD.

The Amber Alert for two girls from Loranger who ended up in Mississippi is being questioned. Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff Daniel Edwards says the alert was issued by Louisiana State Police three hours after it was requested Thursday morning. Edwards told New Orleans Fox8 news he’s frustrated and that he’s reached out to the Louisiana Sheriff’s Association about the delay.  State Police have yet to comment. The FBI is now the lead agency in this investigation.
