When LSU athletics unveiled a 28-million dollar complex for the football team this week it inspired one alum to start a Go-Fund-Me campaign for a new library. Brooke Thorington has more.

After LSU unveiled its multi-million dollar athletic complex for the football team this week, some alumni want to put the focus back on academics. LSU Alum Ginger Gibson isn’t faulting the University for building the new state of the art facility, but she also believes students deserve and need a new library so she’s taking matters into her own hands.

Gibson has set a goal of $20-million for the new library with the GoFundMe Page that will go straight to the LSU Foundation. Gibson feels so strongly about it because the library is vital to every student at the university.

Cut 4 (13) “…experience.”

LSU President F. King Alexander says a new library is in the master plan, but funding remains an issue. Gibson hopes fans of LSU rally behind the campaign like they do for the team because a proper library is a win-win for everyone.

Cut 5 (09) “…at the sametime.”

All donations are tax-deductible because they will be used to advance academic priorities. As of Friday afternoon, over $2,000 has been raised.

A Lafayette judge is the target of scrutiny after ordering a bailiff to tape a defendant’s mouth shut.  15th Judicial District Court Judge Marilyn Castle had Michael Duhon’s mouth taped after multiple interruptions.  Was the judge in the right?  Longtime Lafayette Attorney Tommy Guilbeau…

Duhon was sentenced to eleven years after being found guilty of theft of over $25,000 and money laundering.  The judge also recommended he receive mental health treatment.  Duhon’s attorney eventually asked for the tape to be removed and to have his client escorted out of the courtroom.  Guilbeau says the judge has the responsibility to make sure justice is done and court business is carried out.

Guilbeau says a judge can order someone to be bound, gagged, duck taped, or removed from the courtroom.

Legal analyst Tim Meche says there is an alternative to taping the man’s mouth shut.

The ACLU calls the incident shocking, dehumanizing, and brutal.

Tickets are $12.50 for adults, while kids five and under get in for free. Kirkpatrick anticipates nearly 15-thousand visitors to the expo. He says many of them will attend the USA Waterfowl Calling Championships

Kirkpatrick says the expo showcases outdoor and boating equipment for the beginner or young child up to the skilled hunter or boater. He says one of the more popular exhibits is the Fetch n Fish dog show

Two former LSU students received 30 days in the parish jail for their role in the alcohol-related hazing death of fraternity pledge Maxwell Gruver. Twenty-two-year-old Sean Gott of Lafayette and 20-year-old Ryan Isto of Montana were immediately taken into custody. They pleaded no contest to hazing last year.

Saints wide receiver Michael Thomas’ absence is the big storyline at training camp, but the battle for starting center will be an important one to watch. Free-agent signee Nick Easton and rookie Erik McCoy will battle to replace the retired Max Unger. Coach Sean Payton is looking forward to the competition

It will also be a big camp for wide receiver Cam Meredith, who only caught nine passes last season after signing as a free agent.

Louisiana Tech announces that J.C. Love Field at Pat Patterson Park will remain at its current location. The baseball stadium needs to be rebuilt following an EF 3 tornado that destroyed a number of athletic facilities in April. The school decided the baseball field will remain at the historical location due to its unique setting. A timetable has not been set on construction.

There are reports that U-L Lafayette Football Coach Billy Napier will receive a one-year contract extension. Napier led the Cajuns to the Sun Belt Championship game in his first season as head coach in Lafayette.

A Baton Rouge judge has sentenced two former LSU students to 30 days in the parish jail for their roles in the 2017 death of Phi Delta Theta pledge Max Gruver. Sean Gott and Ryan Isto pleaded no contest last year to misdemeanor hazing in the alcohol-related death. Matthew Naquin, who was just convicted of negligent homicide, will be sentenced in October.

An LSU professor is alive today thanks to a group of students who saved his life after he went into cardiac arrest while swimming on campus. Brooke Thorington has more.

Gov. Edwards issues a statewide emergency declaration following a cybersecurity attack on several school systems in North Louisiana.  Senior Coordinating Official for the Louisiana Cybersecurity Commission Kenneth Donnelly says they are making a statewide effort to educate users to safeguard themselves from possible future attacks.  Donnelly says you can find resources with GOHSEP.

Senate President John Alario announces he’s ending his political career. Alario was first elected to the Louisiana House in 1972. While some say Alario is part of the problem with the state government, Political analyst Bernie Pinsonat says many of Alario’s critics never met him, governors and legislators trusted him because he always kept his word

An LSU Professor had the roles reversed when he found himself depending on students as he went into cardiac arrest. Math professor Dr. James Oxley was swimming laps on campus July 5th when he slipped under the water and eight students jumped into action to save his life. Oxley says his cardiologist told him it was the students’ training that made the difference.

The town of Church Point has a unique designation as being the home to Louisiana’s first cloned cow. The cow lives at Circle T Cattle Company. Owner Bob Thibodeaux says the original cow that was duplicated has since been sold and lives in Florida. Thibodeaux says the clone, named Eight Over Nine, has the exact look and personality of the original.

The folks at the Circle T Cattle Company in Church Point are so serious about the love for a prized cow, they’ve had it cloned. Kevin Barnhart has the story.

Isabella Alvarez, a senior from New Orleans was a lifeguard on duty that day, says she will never forget that fateful day.

After several delays Southern University’s medical marijuana program planted its first crop seeds this week after winning regulatory approval from the state. The university says they remain on schedule to meet timelines to have product available for patients this fall. Southern is the only historically black university in the country to be involved in growing medical marijuana.

Oxley says his cardiologist told him it was the students’ training that saved seconds and made a difference in saving brain function. Katie Estes a junior used her CPR skills to help aid in the rescue.

The town of Church Point has a unique designation as being home to the state’s first cloned cow. The cow lives at Circle T Cattle Company. Several years ago Bob Thibodeaux purchased a cow that won awards all over the world.

The cloning of the animal took place in the state of Iowa, then was transported back to Louisiana. The Cow named “Eight Over Nine” is now just over a year old. Thibodeaux says they can clone the cow again if they need to.

State Police is investigating two separate officer-involved shootings that occurred yesterday. The first one happened in Vidalia at an apartment complex. The suspect 21-year-old Kaleb Melton died at the scene, while a Concordia Parish Sheriff’s deputy suffered moderate to severe injuries. The second shooting involved a West Baton Rouge sheriff’s deputy, who fatally shot a suspect at a Port Allen motel.
