Spokesperson Melissa Matey says the sheriff’s Office received a call about a cop involved in a domestic issue brandishing a weapon. She says when officers arrived, they found that Lt. Nolan Anderson was armed…:

A grand jury indicted St. Bernard Parish president David Peralta on Wednesday for felony stalking. The case stems from Peralta’s bitter relationship with his ex-wife and sexual battery charges pending in St. Bernard. Bond is set at $35,000 and he is required to turn himself in by Monday.

She says when deputies arrived, they found that Anderson had fired several shots in the air, and he then turned the gun on the officers. Matey says, at that point, the deputies were forced to take action…

She says deputies then fired at Anderson. Anderson was pronounced dead at a local hospital. Matey says Anderson was a 25-year veteran of the sheriff’s office. She says this is a very tragic and difficult time for the St. John Sheriff’s Office…

Sugar cane harvest season starts to ramp up with the beginning of grinding season today.  American Sugar Cane League’s Jim Simon (SEE-moan) says this year’s start-up is a week to ten days later that normal.  Simon says the crop looks to be a little short compared to the last few years…

He says this year’s crop appears to be an average crop for the state, after a couple of year’s of bumper crops.  Simon says weather conditions really affected Louisiana’s sugar cane beginning with the cold winter…

He says a couple of sugar mills will begin operation today and all 11 mills in the state will be up and running by October 10.  Simon says with the harvest getting into gear, you’ll begin seeing more trucks loaded with sugar cane on the roads.  He asks drivers to be cautious…

Survey results released by the Louisiana Department of Education show that future teachers need more time in the classroom. The survey polled more than 6,000 educators. Superintendent John White agrees, but says the extra time in the classroom should be used for teaching and not observation…

The survey found that half of teachers say they were not fully prepared for the realities of the classroom. White says it makes all the sense in the world that those preparing to be teachers, have taught under a mentor teacher…

State Police say an on-duty St. John the Baptist Parish Sheriff’s deputy was fatally shot by a fellow deputy during a domestic dispute in LaPlace. Authorities say deputies exchanged gunfire with Lt. Nolan Anderson during the standoff. They say Anderson fired several shots in the air and turned the weapon toward the deputies, who were forced to take action. Anderson was pronounced dead at a local hospital.

A Federal Judge ordered today that businesses won’t have to pay BP back money the oil giant says was overpaid as a result of a flawed settlement money formula. Judge Carl Barbier had ordered the formula changed several weeks ago but as for money already paid, the ruling was a deal is a deal. Loyola University law professor Dane Ciolino says this is good news for the plaintiffs…

This afternoon in St. John the Baptist the Baptist Parish, an off-duty sheriff’s deputy has been shot in an incident involving another deputy. A New Orleans TV station says the shooting was the result of some kind of domestic dispute at a residence. The deputy who was shot has been taken to the trauma center at a New Orleans hospital.

The teen is identified as Cameron Tillman — a student from Ellender High School. Trooper Evan Harrell says deputies got the emergency call around 5:30 Tuesday evening…:

That investigation is still in the very early stages; as is the one going in LaPlace, as a St. John the Baptist off-duty sheriff’s deputy has been shot in an incident involving another St. John Parish deputy at a residence around 2 o’clock this afternoon. It is not clear whether or not the gunshot was self inflicted. The deputy who was shot has been taken to a New Orleans hospital in the Trauma Center. State Police is investigating that incident as well.

A federal judge has ruled that companies who received money from BP after claiming their business was damaged as a result of the 2010 Gulf oil spill, do not have to return any money to the oil giant. BP argued that a glitch in their funding formula is paying money to questionable claims and should be returned. However, Judge Carl Barbier says the payments that BP agreed to included a stipulation that they would not be changed by court action at a later date.
