A 9-year-old is dead and 8 others are injured following a fatal crash in Iberville Parish. State Trooper Bryan Lee says 27-year-old Tommie Killough’s passengers were not restrained, including the child who died, Asha Cooper, because there were more people in Killough’s 5 passenger SUV than there were seatbelts.

The first Louisiana dolphin to be rescued and released into the wild is thriving. Audubon Nature Institute Stranding and Rescue Coordinator Gabriella Vazquez says the young dolphin was found stranded on the beach in Grand Isle in October of 2015. She says when they tried to release him back into the Gulf, he showed no initiative to swim, so they made the decision to rescue the calf.

A former Eunice police officer is facing charges of obstruction and malfeasance in office, for allegedly cussing out a suspect who was issuing a statement and threatening to beat him up. Major Eddie Thibodaux with the St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Office says Lt. Varden Guillory was arrested after he ripped up the suspect’s statement and made an arrest before completing the investigation.

Guillory left the Eunice Police Department after the incident.

He says Killough is still in the hospital, but once she gets out, she will face multiple charges.

Audubon Nature Institute Stranding and Rescue Coordinator Gabriella Vazquez says the young dolphin was found in October of 2015 stuck on the beach in Grand Isle and they rehabed the calf. She says NOAA required scientists to monitor the dolphin in the wild after he was released into Barataria Bay.

Major Eddie Thibodaux with the St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Office says Lt. Varden Guillory became heated with domestic violence suspect Heath Bergeronwhen Bergeron came in to make his statement. He says Guillory arrested Bergeron for domestic abuse battery, without getting the proper information first.

Dow Chemical announced today it will lay of 2500 workers worldwide, though it’s not clear whether the job cuts would affect the company’s more than 6,000 employees and contract workers in Louisiana. The cuts are part of Dow’s efforts to achieve $500 million in cost savings and boost revenue after taking full control of the Dow Corning Corp.

They say Carrie Rivers is charged with false swearing, violating public health, unauthorized use of a movable and improper telecommunications and harassment. She faces a $35,000 bond.

Lee says there were seven children in the five passenger SUV, including Cooper. He says once Killough gets out of the hospital, she faces many charges including negligent homicide.

The St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Office is investigating the case of a former Eunice Police officer on charges alleging he threatened to beat up someone he was booking on domestic abuse charges. They say Lt. Varden Guillory is accused of telling Heath Bergeron that he would “rip his head off” if he wasn’t in uniform, then charging the man with felony domestic abuse after ripping up the statement. Guillory was charged with obstruction and malfeasance.

Beachgoers need to be on the lookout this holiday weekend as a flesh-eating bacteria has been found in the Gulf of Mexico. Emelie Gunn has more…:

Social media has been going wild with rumors regarding an increase in SNAP benefits this month. However the Bureau of Communications and Governmental Affairs had denied these rumors and urges SNAP recipients to remain cautious of online, and telephone scams. DCFS says the rumor is 100% false, and SNAP recipients will continue to receive their usual benefit amount on their regularly scheduled day.

Flesh-eating bacteria have been discovered at beaches along the Gulf Coast, and Biology Professor at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Dr. Gregory Buck says people should be cautious when entering the water with open cuts or scratches. He says if you believe you have the vibrio bacteria, go straight to the doctor because it can be life threatening.

There are about 10 to 15 cases of infection from this bacteria in Louisiana, annually.

People on both sides of the abortion debate are sounding off on the Supreme Court ruling that struck down a Texas abortion regulation law. Louisiana Executive Director of the National Organization for Women, Angela Adkins, hopes this paves the way for the similar law in Louisiana to be struck down.

Attorney General Jeff Landry says his office will continue to fight for Louisiana’s pro-life laws.

Cleco customers will get a credit on their July power bill as a result of the Pineville-based utility company’s sale to a foreign investment group. Opponents to the sale will have negative impacts on customers, like seeing their rates go up over time. But Cleco spokesperson Robbyn Cooper says customer shouldn’t notice a change in their service.

There have been conflicting reports over whether the Saints will hold mini-camp at the Greenbrier in West Virginia as planned, given the recent flooding the state has seen. State Police say a child is dead and 8 people are injured after a vehicle that was passing in a no passing zone crashed and flipped multiple in Iberville Parish. They say 9-year-old Asha Cooper was killed, and the driver, 27-year-old Tommie Killough of Livonia, faces multiple charges including negligent homicide.

With the rising heat comes the rising electricity bills this summer, but CLECO customers are getting a nice break. A two-vehicle crash in Iberville Parish that took the life of a child and injured several others Monday afternoon leaves a driver facing many charges, according to State Police. They say 9-year-old Asha Cooper was killed in the wreck near Plaquemine. 27-year-old Tommie Killough of Livonia had seven kids in the SUV when he tried to pass in a no passing zone and hit another vehicle. There were nine people in his vehicle. Killough’s charges include negligent homicide.

Many people are likely to be out on the water for the 4th of July holiday but should be cautious because the flesh-eating bacteria, vibrio, has been found along the Gulf of Mexico coast stretching from Texas to the Florida panhandle. Biology Professor at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Dr. Gregory Buck says vibrio can enter the body through eating raw shellfish or an open wound..:
