The state is mourning the death of a Louisiana State Trooper who was shot in the head by a suspected impaired driver near Lake Charles. Forty-three-year-old Steven Vincent died Monday morning. Authorities have identified the gunman as 54-year-old Kevin Daigle of Lake Charles. State Police Colonel Mike Edmonson says Vincent leaves behind a wife and 9-year-old son

Edmonson says Vincent was trying to assist Daigle, who drove his pick-up truck off the road on Sunday afternoon.  He says Daigle took a sawed-off shotgun out of his vehicle and fired it at Vincent. Edmonson says Daigle will be charged with first-degree murder of a police officer

Vincent served as a State Trooper for 13 years and comes from a law enforcement family. He has one brother who is a State Trooper and another that’s the Iowa police chief. Edmonson says Vincent wore his badge proudly

According to the National Hurricane Center, Danny is no more. After achieving Category 3 hurricane status over the weekend, Danny has dramatically decreased in intensity. Hurricane Specialist Todd Kimberlain says an Air Force reconnaissance aircraft investigated the storm this morning and could not find a well defined center…

Since there was no center and very little wind, Danny was declared a remnant at 10AM. Kimberlain says as Danny moved closer to the Caribbean, the environment just became too unstable…

Kimberlain says the Center’s attention is now turned to a disturbance just off the coast of Africa. Kimberlain says an Air Force plane is scheduled to investigate this new system Tuesday afternoon…

The LaFourche Parish Sheriff’s Office says they’ve arrested another 18-year-old man in connection with the rape of a teenage girl — the third suspect in the case. Dylan Bergeron of Golden Meadow is charged with sexual battery. Spokesman Brennan Matherne says they were alerted by the girl’s parents on August 9th that their daughter had gone missing for several hours. He says deputies located the teen a short time later…:

Matherne said 18-year-old Taylor Fontenot and 28-year-old Davery Gaspared were initially charged with third degree rape of a teenager. He says at that time, Bergeron was believed to be a witness in the case:

Gaspard was additionally charged with obstruction of justice, unlawful purchase of alcohol for persons under 21 and criminal mischief. Matherne says they believe the teen girl was at a friend’s house and she left with the three men on her own free will. Matherne says Fontenot is also 18 and Gaspard is 28 years old. They are each charged with third degree rape of a teenager. He says Bergeron later admitted he committed sexual battery on the victim.

The Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office says a man is under arrest charged with vehicular homicide after running over a pedestrian in New Iberia. Investigators believe 37-year-old Quincy Mallery was drunk when his SUV crossed the center line and struck a male victim walking near the roadway. The pedestrian was pronounced dead at a local hospital.

The AP is reporting the Legislative Auditor’s Office says higher education in Louisiana is owed more than $15 million dollars from the state racing commission. They say under state law the Board of Regents should have gotten more than 1/3 of the license fee wagers at off-track betting facilities between July 1996 to April 2015. The report shows the racing commission does not concur saying there is no mechanism in place to distribute the money.

After growing into a category three hurricane last week, Danny is now just an area of disturbed weather. The National Hurricane center has issued its final advisory regarding the system which is moving towards islands in the Atlantic then the Caribbean.

The National Hurricane Center says it has issued its final advisory regarding Danny. They say the system has now become a trough of low pressure about 45 miles west-southwest of Guadeloupe. Forecasters will watch to see if the system moves into a more favorable area for development, but most models do not anticipate any reformation.

More campaign signs are starting to pop up around the state, but for the most part with the Louisiana governor’s primary two months from today – voters haven’t seen much from the candidates. LSU is ranked 14th in the AP preseason poll. The Tigers are one of seven SEC schools ranked in the Top 25. Still no word on who will start at quarterback, but Brandon Harris continues to take a majority of the snaps with the first team according to Coach Les Miles, who also says the compeition has been fun to watch…

ULM released an updated two-deep depth chart today and redshirt freshman Garrett Smith is still listed as the first-string quarterback.

And Louisiana Tech has received a verbal committment from defensive end Willie Baker, who is listed as a three-star propsect and is getting ready for his senior season at Livonia High School.

Saints quarterback Drew Brees had an impressive showing in New Orleans preseason game against New England. Brees led the first-team offense on three scoring drives as he completed 8-of-10 passes for 159 yards and two touchdowns. He says it was important to get off to a fast start…

Brees and the Saints have resumed training camp at the team’s training facility in Metairie. They’ll host Houston on Sunday at 3 PM.

In other NFL news…Panthers defensive end Frank Alexander is done for the season with a torn achilles. The former Southern Lab standout was expected to be a starter this season. And Falcons wide receiver Roddy White needs surgery on his elbow, but is expected to be back for the season opener.

State Police Col Mike Edmonson says Lake Charles Trooper Steven Vincent, who was shot in the line of duty Sunday afternoon, has died. They say the 43-year-old husband and father of a 9-year-old son was pronounced dead at 8am this morning. Edmonson says Vincent stopped a suspected drunk driver who pulled a shotgun out and shot the trooper in the head..:

The National Hurricane Center says Danny, which became a Category 3 storm over the weekend, continues to weaken and is now a tropical depression. The Air Force hurricane hunter aircraft indicate that the maximum sustained winds have decreased to near 35 miles per hour with higher gusts. They say further weakening is forecast as the center of Danny moves across the southern Leeward islands before moving into the northeastern Caribbean Sea later today.

The Louisiana governor’s race is two months from today but so far we haven’t seen much action from the candidates on the campaign trail. Most see Republican David Vitter as the front runner in this race followed by Democrat John Bel Edwards. UL-Lafayette Political Science Professor Pearson Cross says the relative inactivity of the campaigns is an advantage for Vitter…

A Lake Charles State Trooper has died after being shot in the line of duty Sunday afternoon by a suspected drunk driver. Authorites say Trooper Steven J. Vincent was responding to a call of a vehicle driving erratically when he was allegedly shot by 54-year-old Kevin Daigle. Vincent succumbed to his injuries at a local hospital this morning. He leaves behind a wife and a 9-year-old son. Daigle will be charged with first degree murder of a police officer.

Louisiana’s unemployment rate sits at 6.2 percent so we asked the four candidates running for governor how they would put people to work. Republican Scott Angelle says it’s time to ramp up work force development and tackle the serious issue of welfare reform…

The Caddo Parish Sheriff’s Office has arrested two women accused of stealing a total of $400,000 from the bank account of a 96-year-old woman. They say the victim’s granddaughter, 39-year-old Jennifer Smith of Shreveport, and a personal sitter for the woman, 39-year-old Alice Haralson of Stonewall, each had power of attorney for the woman’s estate at separate times. Each allegedly took $200,000 from the victim. Smith and Haralson are each charged with exploitation of the infirmed.

Saints quarterback Drew Brees looked like a guy in his mid-20s instead of a 36-year-old in Saturday’s preseason game against the New England Patriots. Brees is coming off a season where he threw 17 interceptions, some at critical times, and admitted an oblique injury and another undisclosed injury led to poor technique

On Saturday night, Brees led the first-team offense on three scoring drives as he completed 8-of-10 passes for 159 yards and two touchdowns.

UL-Lafayette and basketball coach Bob Marlin have agreed to a five year contract extension. The new deal will keep Marlin in Lafayette until 2020. Martin led the Ragin Cajuns to the 2014 Sunbelt Tournament Championship and a trip to the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament.

The LSU football team is less than two weeks away from the season opener against McNeese State. Coach Les Miles likes what he’s seen from his defensive line, in particular the defensive ends, who have improved under first-year coach Ed Orgeron…

Livonia defensive end Willie Baker has committed to play college football at Louisiana Tech. Baker made his choice known Saturday night. The six-foot-four, 235 pound three star prospect opted for the Bulldogs over Arkansas, Illinois, UL-Lafayette, Ole Miss, Tennessee, and Texas A&M. Baker was a first team All-State selection last season with 97 tackles and 12 sacks helping Livonia to the 3-A state title.
