Matthew Mire who in 2021, murdered Louisiana State Trooper Adam Gaubert and Ascension Parish resident Pamela Adair has made a plea deal that spares his life. The agreement will sentence him to 2 life sentences plus 348 and a half years in prison for his multi-parish crime spree that also left three other people injured. The deal means Mire will avoid a trial. Sentencing was handed down in Ascension Parish and will also need to be formalized in part in Livingston Parish for the crimes in that parish.

A two-vehicle crash on Louisiana Highway 17 in Richland Parish Tuesday night left two dead and one injured. State Trooper Ryan Davis says the crash claimed the lives of 28-year-old driver Billie Myers and 59-year-old James Washington. Driver of the GMC Terrain, 18-year-old, Alexis Cox is stable with serious injuries.

Neither Myers nor Washington was wearing a seat belt. Davis says vehicles carry massive amounts of energy.

Colorado State University researchers have decreased their hurricane season forecast. Experts are now predicting 16 named storms, including eight hurricanes and three major hurricanes, one less than the school’s initial prediction for each category. This may be FEMA’s last hurricane season as President Trump talks of doing away with the agency. The FEMA Review Council met in New Orleans yesterday. Governor Jeff Landry says the panel was set up by President Trump to create an agency that prioritizes efficiency over bureaucracy when a natural disaster strikes.

The Pelicans will tip off the NBA 2K26 Summer League in Las Vegas at 2:30 against the Timberwolves. Former LSU center William Baker and McNeese forward Christian Shumate are both on the Pels Summer League Roster. Shumate played four years in Lake Charles, and now the Chicago native has another opportunity in the Bayou State.

The CEO of one of the finalists to build LSU’s new arena has been indicted in a federal case for bid-rigging a similar project at UT Austin. Oak View Group was able to subcontract its competitors and submit the sole qualified bid to build Texas’s Moody Center, which LSU officials have named as the inspiration for a new arena.

Former LSU star D-J LeMahieu is headed for a change of scenery. The Yankees designated the two-time batting champ for assignment. LeMahieu turns 37 on Sunday and is batting .266 this season.

The MLB Draft begins Sunday in Atlanta, and several national championship-winning Tigers will come off the board. Lefty ace Kade Anderson has been mocked first overall and ranks as the number one prospect on ESPN and second on MLB.com. Right-hander Anthony Eyanson could go towards the end of the first round, ranked 45th on ESPN and 40th by MLB.  Both rank flamethrower Chase Shores towards the end of day one selections. Infielders Daniel Dickinson and Jared Jones and D-H Ethan Frey all project to be early day two picks.

A long overdue honor for a Louisiana military hero who was killed in action more than eight decades ago. Marine Private First Class Harry LeBert was killed in June of 1944 during World War Two. His then unidentified remains were transferred to the Philippines in the 1950s then to Hawaii three years ago where DNA testing conclusively put LeBert’s name with his body.  Louisiana V-A Secretary Charlton Meginley says LeBert was interred July 2nd at Southwest Louisiana Veterans Cemetery.

The FEMA Review Council, which is looking to make major reforms to the federal disaster response agency, held its second meeting in New Orleans. Last month, President Trump said he wants to phase out FEMA after the current hurricane season. Governor Jeff Landry, who attended yesterday’s meeting, says the President’s goal is to have a competent and functional agency whether that’s FEMA or something else.

A 64-year-old Iranian woman living in New Orleans legally since 1978 has been freed from ICE custody after being detained for two weeks. Donna Kashanian was released following a robust letter-writing campaign orchestrated in part by New Orleans Republican State Representative Stephanie Hilferty, who says Kashanian is an upstanding member of the community.

President Trump has said he wants to phase out FEMA after this year’s hurricane season. Governor Landry says the goal is to have a competent and functional agency, saying local governments and residents should not have to wait years for FEMA to distribute disaster aid.

Donna Kashanian was released from ICE custody following national outcry and outreach from elected officials from both parties, including New Orleans Republican State Representative Stephanie Hilferty.

Kashanian first came to the U.S. in 1978 on a student visa and applied for asylum after the shah was overthrown a year later. She eventually was allowed to remain in the U.S. as long as she checked in with immigration authorities, which she never failed to do.

Cotton was once Louisiana’s biggest crop as far as number of acres planted. But Louisiana Agriculture Commissioner Mike Strain says high production costs have made it difficult for cotton growers to make a profit. Strain says less than 100-thousand acres of cotton could be planted this year…

After 81 years since he was killed in World War Two, Private First Class Harry LeBert was finally laid to rest in Louisiana as he was interred at southwest Louisiana veteran’s cemetery. State Department of Veterans Affairs Secretary Charlton Meginley says it took advances in forensic science to identify Lebert who’s remains spent decades in the Philippines. Meginley says while the LeBert family finally got closure countless others are waiting.
