Once again this year, Louisiana will be featured in the annual Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena, California; which rolls on Monday the 2nd. The float theme will be “Turning a Corner” and will feature numerous riders, including Lt. Governor Billy Nungesser and Franklin Parish native country star Lainey Wilson. Another rider is 22-year-old Pineville native Jordan Fuqua, the reigning Miss Louisiana Association of Fairs & Festivals…:

The float will be a representation of a riverboat, with all surfaces made of flowers or other plants; a Rose Parade tradition and rule. Fuqua says the theme of “Turning a Corner” is appropriate for the Bayou State’s entry…:

Fuqua says she is honored to be able to represent her family and her state on a national platform like the Rose parade, which is also broadcast around the globe…:

As we approach the beginning of 2023 – a big election year for Louisiana – many wonder what Lt. Governor Billy Nungesser’s plans may be. Will he run for governor? Or seek re-election to his current position? Nungesser tells LRN he’s been very encouraged by the numbers asking him to seek the top job…:

If Nungesser does seek the Governor’s Mansion, he’d have to – win or lose – say farewell to being head of Culture, Recreation & Tourism for the state. He says folks in the tourism industry are supportive of his run, but he says many also want him to stay and run for re-election. He says he will have an answer for all concerned by January 10th…:

As a candidate for governor next fall, Nungesser would be up against Attorney General Jeff Landry, who already has state Republican Party backing. Senator John Kennedy may decide to run as well. Nungesser says he owes it to others who may want to run for Lt. Governor to make up his mind quickly…:

As many of us return to work today, it’s still pretty cold for those of us here in the Bayou State. But State Climatologist Barry Keim says high temperatures in Louisiana are going to be a bit warmer.

Wednesday morning, Keim says we’ll still be feeling that artic air that’s settled into the region but by midday, we’ll begin to experience a shift.

By Thursday the frigid air should have moved on and Keim says lows will be in the 50s and highs in the 70s.

If Jayden Daniels returning to play for the Tigers next season was on your Christmas Wish List, you’re very happy to know he’s planning to stick around the 2023 season.  Tiger Rag assistant editor William Weathers says it gives Tiger fans high hopes for next year.

Weathers says Daniels forgoing the NFL draft is a credit to LSU head coach Brian Kelly and staff for building a program that Daniels wants to remain part of a bit longer along. It’s also significant how Daniels grew over the season.

But before the next season kicks off Daniels hopes to lead the Bayou Bengals to victory next month at the Citrus Bowl. Weathers says with Daniels onboard the outlook for wins in 2023 has greatly improved.

Plumbers tell us the extended freeze we had over the weekend was very hard on plumbing.  Marsanne Golsby talked to a plumber.

If you’re on the road today, you’ve noticed gas is cheaper than it was a year ago. Triple A says the statewide average today for regular gas is $2.75, that’ down 28-cents from last year, and 33-cents less than a month ago. For road conditions and closing call 5-1-1.

State Wildlife & Fisheries agents say do not be surprised to see some fairly large fish kills in Louisiana waterways over the coming days. LDWF Director of Marine Fisheries Chris Schieble (SHE-blee) says these often happen when the temperature drops suddenly and the water cools and contracts…:

Hs says to find activities that bring you joy and spend time with those who bring you enjoyment instead of dread.

The East Baton Rouge Coroner’s Office has released the name of the four-year-old boy who was separated from his father after a hike on Saturday and was found in the Amite River. The child is identified as Marias Stricker Abreu. Multiple agencies responded to the 9-1-1 call when his father could not locate the child and after an hour long search the child was found in the Amite River and a fireman jumped in to rescue him. The child later died at the hospital. An autopsy is pending.

Plumbers expect to be getting lots of service calls due to the extended freeze. Baton Rouge plumber Tim Bourriague BOUR-EE-AGH urges people not to try plumbing repairs unless they already know how because they could cause more damage and says the next few days will be challenging for a lot of us…:

Two people were killed, and four others wounded in the Lower 9th Ward of New Orleans at 12:30 this morning. When first responders arrived, they found two nineteen-year old’s, one male and one female, deceased and four others wounded. Investigators say there was a large party in the 2000 block of St. Maurice Street where the shooting occurred. The injured victims are two 18-year-old males, one 18-year-old female, and a 17-year-old female. NOPD says they were treated at a local hospital and the injuries are not life-threatening.

Plumbers expect their phones to be ringing due to the extended freeze. Baton Rouge plumber Tim Bourriague BOUR-EE-AGH says if you suspect you’ve got problems, here’s what you do…:

He says if the incoming line doesn’t work then shut it off at the meter, by lifting the lid and using a device to turn it off.

A mass shooting early this morning in New Orleans’ Lower 9th Ward leaves two teens dead and four in the hospital. New Orleans Police says the victims are all between 17 and 19 years of age. Some male and some female. An investigation is underway and NOPD hopes the public will come forward with tips.

He says, if you discover a leak, quickly turn off your water main, then call a professional.

Gas prices in the Bayou State are about a quarter cheaper than this time last year. AAA spokesman Nick Chabarria says gas prices have been on a downward trend for about the last six weeks…:

How this winter storm affects prices from here remains to be seen.

The state Fire Marshal’s office says a deadly mobile home fire last week in Mansfield was likely caused by using a space heater and the electric oven the heat the home.

The State Fire Marshal’s office seeks the man who started a fire INSIDE a Walmart store in Hammond on Christmas Eve. That happened at around 6 pm. An employee quickly put the fire out and no one was hurt. Security cameras got good images of the guy, so we should expect to hear his name sometime soon.

Once again Tampa Bay came back from a double-digit deficit in the fourth quarter to win a game. Last night they rallied to beat Arizona in overtime to stay one game ahead of the Saints and the Panthers in the NFC South.

On Saturday New Orleans defeated Cleveland 17-10. For the first time this year, Coach Dennis Allen’s team has a two-game winning streak…

The Saints are at 13-and-2 Philadelphia on Sunday.

Zion Williamson is no longer in Health and Safety protocols so it looks like he’ll play tonight against the Indiana Pacers. Williamson missed the last two games, but New Orleans still pulled out victories over San Antonio and Oklahoma City. Larry Nance Junior is listed as questionable with right Achilles soreness. Brandon Ingram remains out with a left toe contusion.

LSU basketball is mourning the death of Willie Sims, a member of the Tigers 1981 NCAA Final Four team. He was known as the Super Sub, coming off the bench bringing energy and spirit. He was considered the best sixth man in college basketball. He died on December 23rd at the age of 64 after suffering a heart attack in August while living in Israel.

The LSU Tigers will tip off SEC play on Wednesday against Arkansas. Both teams are 11-and-1 on the season. Tomorrow night, Northwestern State is at Texas A-and-M.

The 12-and-0 Lady Tigers are at Arkansas on Thursday. LSU is ranked 10th in the country, while the Lady Backs are ranked 17th and they are 13-and-2, losing their last two games to 16th-ranked Oregon and South Florida.

Police in New Orleans are investigating a shooting early this morning in the city’s Lower 9th Ward that left 2 dead and 4 injured. Details are few at this time, but we do know the victims – both live and deceased – ae all between 17 and 19 years of age; some boys, some girls. This is a developing story.

After three nights of temperatures well below freezing, plumbers are expected to be pretty busy this week. Marsanne Golsby talks with one…:

A East Baton Rouge Parish 4-year-old, who got lost during a Christmas Eve hike and was found later in freezing cold water…had passed away at a local hospital. Hypothermia and exposure are suspected, but an autopsy is scheduled.

A Shreveport family saw their home destroyed by fire early this morning. Firefighters say it started at around 3:15 this morning. Everyone made it out alive, but a family pet may have perished. The home is a total loss…just a day after Christmas.

Entergy is asking its customers to conserve power during this hard freeze event, to head off any further potential power outages. A number of Louisiana cities have already had power blackouts, and crews are working hard to get the power back on. In the meantime, the state’s biggest electricity provider asks we turn off non-essential lights, lower out thermostats and avoid using large appliances.

So when WILL it begin to warm up a bit again? Brooke Thorington asks state Climatologist Barry Keim…:

The massive $1.7-trillion federal spending bill – with billions more aid for Ukraine and loads of green energy spending – has passed the House and heads for President Biden’s desk. Senator John Kennedy voted no, along with every other Louisiana Republican. His main objection was its effect on inflation…:

The bill passed 68-29 in the Senate and 225-201 in the House…meaning a good many Republicans voted for it.
