News website The Lens reports the City of New Orleans has been giving away counterfeit N95 masks for protection against the coronavirus. Remember a REAL N95 mask will NOT have ear loops; it will have straps that tie behind your head. The city says even the fake masks provide some protection from spread of the virus.

 

A Dr. Martin Luther King exhibit is traveling this month and next through the University of Louisiana system campuses. The “Carrying on the Dream” exhibit is on display today and tomorrow on the campus of Louisiana Tech in Ruston. La Tech spokesperson Tonya Oaks Smith says the exhibit is appropriate for all ages…:

Included in the traveling exhibit is the 1966 Cadillac hearse that carried King’s body to his funeral almost 54 years ago in Memphis.

Governor John Bel Edwards sent his message to Louisiana in honor of the celebration of Martin Luther King Jr’s national holiday this morning. The governor focused on continuing the fight for equality, specifically within our criminal justice system. He cites the recent posthumous pardon of Homer Plessy as a step in the right direction…:

Mr. Edwards says the state still has some important progress to make.

Business owners in New Orleans are concerned about recent violent incidents in and around the French Quarter. As Carnival Season gets underway, two recent shootings in the Quarter have shop, bar and restaurant owners worried the high crime will cause potential visitors to change their plans, and skip Mardi Gras in New Orleans. Many French Quarter eateries are hiring extra security, to try to keep their patrons safe.

 

Nearly 4 & ½ months after Hurricane Ida hit, power has finally been restored to Grans Isle, in lower Jefferson Parish. Mayor David Camardelle says there is still a lot work to be done in getting the town back to normal, but having the juice back on certainly helps. He says now resident can get moved back in full-time..:

Authorities release the names of two people killed Friday in a helicopter crash in Lafourche Parish. They are 51-year-old Dana Burt, of Kaplan, and his passenger, 30-year-old Dylan Horn, from Panama City, Florida. The chopper went down at about 10 Friday morning. The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the crash.

Expect a slight warming trend over the next couple day, but then another cold front in coming for Thursday; bringing in the chance of a hard freeze by Friday morning.

In the NFL playoffs yesterday, Kansas City and Tampa Bay advanced, while Dallas’s season ended with a home loss to the San Francisco 49ers. Former Haughton star and Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott threw for 254 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Big game for former Ragin Cajun running back Elijah Mithcell as he had 96 yards rushing and one touchdown to help San Francisco advance to play at Green Bay.

Joe Burrow and the Bengals will play Tennessee this Saturday. The Bengals won their first playoff game in 31 years as Cincinnati held off the Raiders 26-19 on Saturday. Burrow threw two touchdown passes in the win…

It was the second straight game LSU played without starting point guard Xavier Pinson, who has a sprained knee. Wade hopes Pinson will be back this week. Louisiana Tech improved to 6-0 in Conference USA with a 76062 win over Southern Miss to finish a two-game sweep of the Golden Eagles in regular season play. Kenneth Lofton Junior had 23 points to lead the way.

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries says the last two hurricanes season produced 579-million dollars in damages to the state’s fishing industry. LDWF biologist administrator Jason Froeba says the total amount of damages to infrastructure was 304-million and Ida accounted for 70-percent of that.

Friends and family members of the Hammond man who died last week after being crushed in a garbage truck are questioning his death. Police say 42-year-old Jermaine Watts sought shelter and fell asleep in a dumpster, but those who knew Watts say his home was just six blocks away and he was known to keep clean and use sanitizers regularly. An autopsy has yet to be completed.

Some are complaining the price of medical marijuana in its smokable form is too high. For example, up to $480 per ounce. Gretna Representative Joe Marino, Chair of the state’s Medical Marijuana Commission, says the high price is due to the limited supply from two growing operations.

The Louisiana Tech men’s basketball team played well down the stretch yesterday and defeated Southern Miss 76 to 62 to complete a regular-season series sweep of the Golden Eagles. Kenneth Jofton Junior led the way with 23 points and Tech held U-S M to 33-percent shooting.

12th ranked LSU didn’t play well down the stretch on Saturday and the Tigers were upset by Arkansas 65-58. The loss ended LSU’s three-game winning streak. Coach Will Wade says they couldn’t overcome their weaknesses…
