Over 500-thousand people in 25 parishes that suffered damages to their property as a result of Hurricane Ida have applied for FEMA assistance…

That’s FEMA spokesperson Nate Custer says much of the money is going towards emergency home repairs or temporary housing. The deadline for Ida victims to apply for disaster assistance is November 29th.

Gaming Control Board Chairman Ronnie Johns says eight casinos regulated by the state are accepting legal sports bets, while seven other casinos have applications pending. Nicholls Freshman running back Collin Guggenheim rushed for 266 yards and three touchdowns as the Colonels upset 15th ranked Southeastern Louisiana 45-42 in the River Bell Classic last night. The Lions finish the season with an 8-and-3 record and will have to wait until Sunday to find out of its that’s good enough to get into the F-C-S playoffs.

LSU Coach Ed Orgeron says Quarterback Garrett Nussmeier will not play anymore this season in order to preserve his redshirt season. Max Johnson will start tomorrow night against ULM and if something happens to Johnson, freshman walk-on Matt O’ Dowd will play.

Louisiana Tech hosts Southern Miss in the final home game of the season tonight. The Bulldogs snapped a five-game losing streak with a 42-32 win over Charlotte last Saturday. Sophomore Aaron Allen made his first start and threw for 324 yards and two touchdowns. Coach Skip Holtz says he was happy to see Allen play well…

The Louisiana Supreme Court will hear oral arguments on December seventh on whether Ochsner Health’s vaccine mandate is constitutional. District judges initially dismissed the lawsuit, but an appeals court in Shreveport issued a restraining order against the mandate preventing Ochsner from taking action against employees who are vaccinated.

Voters in St. Tammany Parish will soon decide the future of the proposed Camellia Bay Casino, Resort and youth sports complex. Developers have brought in a heavy hitter to help win them over; former Saints quarterback Drew Brees. At the Medical Marijuana Commission meeting, lawmakers questioned Agriculture Commissioner Mike Strain about timelines for the expansion of medical marijuana products. Kenner Representative Debbie Villio referred to highly detailed rules about testing and regulation and accused the agency of micromanaging.

Strain told Louisiana Radio Network that it’s the legislature that approved the very strict requirements for marijuana because it’s medical grade and is intended to be used by patients who are ill…

The most recent expansion by the legislature will allow medical marijuana to be sold in smokeable form beginning in January.

The commission heard from various parties with vested interests in medical marijuana and their frustrations about delays in the regulatory process. Baton Rouge Representative Scott McKnight acknowledged their concerns.

LSU, Southern University, and their private growing partners are the only approved entities that can legally grow and process marijuana for medical use in the state.

The Rapides Parish Schools is the latest district to receive the “Models of Excellence” designation from the Louisiana Department of Education. State Superintendent Dr. Cade Brumley says Rapides’ Pre-Educator Pathway is a plus to creating teachers for the future in conjunction with LSU at Alexandria.

Brumley says he’s proud of Rapides Parish’s commitment to growing “the next generation of Louisiana teachers.”

Dr. Brumley on why the “Models of Excellence” award recognizing benchmark programs was established.

He says students can earn dual enrollment credit, graduating high school with enough credentials and microcredentials to immediately begin work as paraprofessionals

Dr. Brumley is hopeful the “Models of Excellence” award will work as an incentive for other schools in the state to work with students to interest them in becoming teachers.

Custer says the payout by FEMA to people impacted by the devastation caused by Cat 4 Ida keeps growing.

Voters in St. Tammany Parish will soon decide the future of the proposed Camellia Bay Casino, Resort and youth sports complex. Developers have brought in a heavy hitter to help win them over; former Saints quarterback Drew Brees. In a recorded message, Brees concentrates on the benefits of the youth sports part of the development…:

The proposed $325-million complex, planned to be built in Slidell, would feature a gambling casino, resort hotel, events and concert venues and a massive complex for youth sports and activities. The planned complex would feature a so-called “Miracle League”; inclusive of children with mental and physical disabilities. In his message Brees urges voters to support Camellia Bay on the December 11th ballot…:

St. Tammany voted in 1996 to ban gaming of any kind. A vote for Camellia Bay would reverse that, and potentially open the door for more gaming. Early Voting for the December 11th election starts November 27th. Developers hope that Brees’ endorsement will tip the scales in their favor…:

New Orleans Police arrest five people – all minors – for carjacking a ride share driver Wednesday night in the city’s Gentilly area. Cops say the group of four boys and one girl ordered the ride via an app, and when the driver arrived, they pulled a gun and stole his Jeep Cherokee. Kids today, right?

 

Senator John Kennedy says, if you’re angry about the increased cost of gas, food and everything else, the finger of blame points straight at the Biden Administration. On the Senate floor Wednesday, Kennedy said Biden’s proposed remedy for the economy is folly…:

Kennedy hopes his Democrat colleagues will give up on what he calls “another extremist spending bill.”

A dark chapter from the Louisiana history books is being rectified, as the state Pardon & Parole Board earlier this week granted a posthumous pardon to Homer Plessy, a black man whose crime was riding a “whites only” car on a train to Covington back in the Jim Crow era. Governor Edwards’ office is planning a ceremony to sign the pardon. He spoke of it during his statewide radio show…:

The Saints will look to snap a two game losing streak when they visit Philadelphia on Sunday. Multi-game losing streaks are rare for the Saints under head coach Sean Payton. Quarterback Quarterback Trevor Siemian says Coach Sean Payton sets the right tone in these situations…

Payton let it be known he’s not happy with the officiating this season when he appeared on the Dan Patrick Show today. The Saints were on the wrong end of a roughing the passer call that resulted in the Titans scoring a touchdown. Payton says the problems start at the top, not the individual crews, somehow they got to reduce the variables.

It’s a busy night of sports across the Bayou State. In Hammond, Southeastern Louisiana football will host Nicholls in the River Bell Classic. If the Lions win, they’ll clinch at least a share of the Southland Confernece title and most likely a home playoff game in the FCS playoffs. A win for the Colonels and they will end the year with a winning record for a fifth consecutive season.

LSU men’s basketball hosts McNeese. The Tigers are 3-and-0 on the season, while the Cowboys are 1-and-2. LSU has won 25 straight games against Louisiana schools. Also, NIcholls is at TC, while Southeastern visits SMU.

The Lady Tigers basketball team is at U-L Lafayette. The Lady Cajuns have not beaten LSU since 1974.

The second round of the high school football playoffs begins tonight. St James is at Madison Prep in a game featuring the last two champions in Class 3A. The winner could face top-seeded Sterlington in the quarterfinals next week. The Panthers are at Westlake tomorrow.

Tonight’s NFL game is Atlanta hosting the New England Patriots.

Senator John Kennedy went off on the Biden White House as the root cause of the huge spikes in the cost of almost everything. Speaking on the Senate floor, Kennedy says the increase in gasoline, groceries and consumer goods & services are the direct result of Biden fiscal & energy policies…:

He says the proposed $2-trillion Reconciliation Bill will drive inflation up further.

There is a near-total lunar eclipse happening overnight tonight: one of the longest lasting in years. LSU Astronomy professor Geoff Clayton says start watching around midnight, and it should reach its peak at about 3 a.m. He says it should be quite a show…:

Preparations are underway for Governor Edwards’ signing of a document officially pardoning the late Homer Plessy for the crime of trying to sit in the white section of a segregated train headed to Covington, way back in the 1890’s. The posthumous pardon for Plessy – who died in 1925 – was unanimously granted by the state Pardons & Parole Board. Governor Edwards says the signing ceremony is being planned to include descendants of those involved in the U.S. Supreme Court case, Plessy v. Ferguson…:

A date for the governor’s signing of the pardon has not been announced.

The Louisiana Farm Bureau says that Thanksgiving in Louisiana is cheaper this year than the national average; about $11.00 less than the national average for a Thanksgiving feast for 10. In numbers, that’s $57.41. The national average is $68.72; $8.61 higher than last year’s national average.

A Farmerville man is a “guest” of the Union Parish jail after crashing his pickup truck through the wall of the Union Parish Library. Farmerville Police say 36-year-old Mickey Mitchell was driving while impaired, in possession of drugs and had no auto insurance at the time. He’s also charged as a Fugitive from Justice due to four outstanding warrants.
