The Louisiana House has unanimously passed a bill extending the period in which victims of child sexual abuse can pursue legal actions against their abusers from 10 to 35 years. Lead sponsor and New Orleans representative Jason Hughes says the extension is necessary since most victims delay their disclosure into adulthood.

The bill provides a list of what qualifies as a “crime against the child” including assault, kidnapping, and criminal neglect. Abita Springs representative Larry Frieman asked Hughes why not eliminate the prescriptive period.

Hughes gave an emotional closing statement on the House floor, telling lawmakers this legislation is on behalf of every victim and survivor of child sexual abuse

A CDC advisory approved the emergency use of the Pfizer COVID vaccine for ages 12 to 15 today. Ochsner Health Pediatrician Dr. William Lennarz says data for this age group is extremely encouraging with the Pfizer vaccine.

The American Academy of Pediatrics has already issued a statement in favor of 12- to 15-year-olds receiving the vaccine. Dr. Lennarz says while yes children are less likely to become extremely ill COVID compared to adults however they are not completely immune to the virus.

Due to the cold storage required for the Pfizer vaccine Ochsner Health says the vaccine will not be available at their pediatric clinics, however, Dr. Lennarz says there are convenient locations for all ages to be vaccinated.

Officials with Ochsner Health say they are ready to begin vaccinating the new age group within 24 hours of the Louisiana Department of Health guidance.

The House votes 53-42 in favor of legislation that would partially limit qualified immunity for police officers in some cases.

Baton Rouge Representative Edmond Jordan says his bill blocks officers from utilizing qualified immunity in a wrongful death or injury suit if a judge deems their conduct to be “unreasonable”.

The bill passed by one vote and heads to the Senate.

House Republican Caucus Chairman Blake Miguez opposes the bill. He says passage would make it more difficult to recruit law enforcement officers.

The legislation is the result of a police reform task force that was formed after last year’s George Floyd Protests. The task force included community, legislative, and law enforcement leaders.

Baton Rouge Representative Ted James took issue with some of his colleagues’ accusations that this bill would lead to frivolous lawsuits against officers.

The bill was amended to include language requiring anyone who loses a qualified immunity lawsuit against an office to pay all court costs and attorney fees. Bill supporters call it a poison pill and will attempt to remove it in the Senate.

The Louisiana House has unanimously approved a bill by New Orleans Representative Jason Hughes that would increase the statute of limitations in civil child abuse cases. Future Victims can take legal actions until their 53-years-old, instead of the current age of 28. Hughes was asked why not eliminate the prescriptive period.

The C-D-C’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices has approved Pfizer’s request for its COVID-19 vaccine to be administered to 12 to 15-year-olds. A Lafayette grand jury declines to indict the officers who fatally shot Trayford Pellerin last August. District Attorney Don Landry showed extended video including Pellerin fleeing from officers while holding a knife after causing a scene at a nearby gas station and then being shot to death as he attempted to enter another corner store. Landry says the shooting was justified.

Pellerin Family Attorney Ronald Haley called the result disappointing and says Pellerin was clearly in the midst of a mental health crisis and had good reason to flee from police at that time…

Earlier this season, LSU defeated Louisiana Tech 16-7, last night the Fighting Tigers topped the 14th ranked Bulldogs 16-8 in a game halted in the seventh inning, because of lighting. Freshman first baseman Tre Morgan continues to swing a hot bat as he went four for five with 2 runs driven in. Zach Arnold was three for four with 4 RBI. Tech jumped out to a 4-0 lead, but Greg Martinez and Kyle Griffen combined to give up seven runs. Taylor Young had two hits and drove in two runs in a losing effort.

The Ragin Cajuns game against Southern was halted after a half-inning of play because of lighting in Lafayette. U-L will now get ready for a big Sun Belt Series against U-T-A. The Mavericks lead the West division with an 11-and-7, while the Cajuns are two games back at 9-and-9. That series will begin Friday in Arlington.

The Pelicans host the Mavericks at 8 PM tonight. If New Orleans losses, they are eliminated from appearing in the play-in tournament. A San Antonio win over the Nets tonight in Brooklyn will also end the Pels chances.

Tonight at 7 PM the NFL schedule will come out. When will the Saints play the defending Super Bowl champion Buccaneers, who they lost to in the playoffs? Also, will New Orleans still appear in a lot of primetime games, even though Drew Brees is retired?

LSU All-American cornerback Derek Stingley Junior will wear the number seven jersey for the Tigers in the 2021 season. Stingley has been wearing number 24. The number seven jersey goes to the team’s top playmaker.

Sports betting legislation at the State Capitol is advancing. The Louisiana House has approved a bill that would allow sports betting to take place at bars and restaurants that serve alcohol. There would be kiosks at those sites to place bets. A Senate committee has also approved a bill that would allow sports betting parlors at the state’s casinos and race tracks.
