State Trooper Michael Reichardt says the cop was shot in an altercation during a traffic stop, but his bulletproof vest deflected the round. He says the deputy then returned fire on the suspect…:

Reichardt says state police will lead the investigation into the shooting, as there are still many unanswered questions.

State Police say I-10 Westbound at milepost 4 near the Texas state line is closed due to flooding. Motorists on the Texas side of the Sabine River who are unable to proceed west are being escorted the opposite direction by troopers, back into Louisiana. If you’re headed that way, LSP says it’s best to travel north via I-49 and US 171 in Lake Charles. However, travel to southeast Texas is strongly discouraged at this time due to flooding.

National media has been praising the efforts of the Cajun Navy 2016 for their rescue operations in Texas where thousands of people have become stranded due to catastrophic flooding from Harvey. Shar says the Cajun Navy 2016 began rescue efforts in Humble, Texas and will continue to work until everyone who needs help is rescued.

Edwards says more than 670 guardsmen are working on Harvey operations in the state. The storm is expected to become a tropical depression by Wednesday night. The entire state is under a flash flood watch through tomorrow evening.

The Cajun Navy 2016’s rescue work in Texas is being praised by local authorities. So how do they do it? Penny Shar with Project We Care Louisiana works in conjunction with the Cajun Navy 2016 and she says they use the Zello Smartphone App to communicate with nearby boats and find stranded residents:

The first time was when he was 12-years-old, when he played a quick game during halftime of a Saints game. Guice says it’s great to start the season in Louisiana….

Pre-sale for the relocated LSU-BYU game in the Mercedes Benz Superdome Saturday, including purchases made through the participating schools, begins today at 10am. Pre-Sale codes will be emailed to fans that purchased tickets from LSU to game originally scheduled for NRG Stadium, season ticket holders, and full time students. Sales will open to the general public at 4.

The Saints and the rest of the NFL have to trim their 90 man roster down to 53 players by Saturday, and New Orleans got a jump start on Tuesday by releasing veteran defensive lineman Jason Jones and placing veteran tight end John Phillips on injured reserve.

Tomorrow’s Southland Conference opener between McNeese State and Nicholls is scheduled to be played in Thibodaux. Nicholls says they are game ready and McNeese AD Bruce Hemphill says as long as it’s safe to travel to Thibodaux they’ll be ready to play on Thursday night as well.

LSU Basketball coach Will Wade is helping out flood ravaged Houston. Cougars Coach Kelvin Smith asked all of his fellow basketball coaches at every level to send him school t-shirts and shoes, and he would distribute them to the appropriate agencies. Wade was quick to respond with a package of 20 pairs of shoes about about 40 LSU shirts to go to help Coach Sampson’s project.

Former LSU head coach Les Miles has joined the Fox Sports Network as an analyst for the 2017 college football season. The Mad Hatter will start with the Northern Illinois at Nebraska game along side Tim Brando. He will appear in select games during the season for Fox Sports.

Southwest Louisiana will likely see the biggest impact, but the entire state will be affected, as we’re all under a flash flood watch through Thursday evening. The Cajun Navy is working hard to assist Texas authorities with ongoing search and rescues. Governor John Bel Edwards says Louisiana was in the same position last year, and we all understand the importance of the Cajun navy and appreciate their help.

While volunteers work to rescue people in Texas, the North Louisiana Red Cross is giving them a place to stay once they are safe. Executive Director Michelle Davidson says the shelter at Morning Star Baptist Church will house up to 250 individuals.

Tropical Storm Harvey is expected to make a second landfall tomorrow in Cameron Parish. State climatologist Barry Keim says that means more rain is in the forecast for the Bayou State because the system is still moving very slowly.

Utility companies are gearing up to deal with potential power outages from the storm. Cleco spokesperson Jennifer Cahill says downed powerlines could be a problem. She reminds customers to stay safe and beware of rising waters.

Cameron Parish is bracing for impact as Tropical Storm Harvey makes a second landfall and treks north through the state. Office of Emergency Preparedness Director Danny Lavergne says the biggest threat from the storm will be the water, as the parish received about 30 inches of rain in just the last two days.

Lavergne says this is the longest time frame the parish has ever had to prepare for a storm. He says the parish filed an emergency declaration on August 23. He says officials are as prepared as they can be.

About 6,000 residents had to evacuate Cameron Parish. Governor John Bel Edwards says Louisiana is not out of the woods yet as the storm is expected to drop another 10 to 20 inches of rain across the Bayou State.

Fox Sports announces that former LSU coach Les Miles will be a college football analyst on their network this fall. Miles is set to make his Fox Sports debut during Week 3 of the season when Nebraska hosts Northern Illinois. Miles’ son Ben is a fullback on the Cornhuskers team.

The Saints have traded a seventh round draft pick in 2019 to the Eagles for veteran long snapper Jon Dorenbos. Dorenbos is also a really good magician and was a big hit on America’s Got Talent in 2016. But when it comes to football….Coach Sean Payton likes his consistency over a long period of time. Dorenbos is set to enter his 15th season.

Payton also said cornerback Delvin Breaux will likely be put on injured reserve, because of a fractured fibula.

Hundreds of Louisiana volunteers, who make up the Cajun Navy, are assisting first responders conduct search and rescue efforts in Texas. Governor John Bel Edwards says the state is working with the Cajun Navy to coordinate efforts. He says they are not regulating the volunteer citizens, but want to ensure rescuers are organized with Texas authorities.

He says the biggest concern for the volunteers on their personal boats is fuel, so the state is helping with that effort when they arrive at the Texas border, they can get gasoline from a department of agriculture truck.
