Authorities have identified the Westin New Orleans hotel shooter who allegedly shot his 24-year-old friend before turning the gun himself Sunday morning. They believe 20-year-old Bajkanwar Aulakh is the one who pointed the gun at officers before a three hour long standoff ended with the man killing himself. Aulakh reportedly was set to appear in a Lafayette courtroom Monday on charges of felony cyberstalking.

According to Louisiana Oyster Task Force Chairman John Tesvich, since the BP spill, oyster production along Louisiana’s coast has reached lows that have not been seen in decades. Last year, just under a million pounds of oyster meat was produced and Tesvich says early numbers for 2014 are only slightly better than last year…

Prior to the BP spill, Louisiana public reefs would produce three to seven million pounds of oyster meat a year.

The Mansfield Police Department have a 28-year-old man in custody accused of sexually assaulting a 10-year-old child. Letyrrus Carter was booked into the DeSoto Parish Detention Center for aggrivated rape. The child’s parents recently reported the alleged incidents which they say happened around a year ago.

Saints Quarterback Drew Brees and defensive back Champ Bailey were in pads at training camp today, which is a sign they are getting closer to full health. Brees and Bailey did not participate in any live team drills, but they were seen at practice moving around.

Coach Sean Payton was also more pleased with today’s practice after expressing his frustrations with yesterdays’ workout, which he called flat and sloppy.

One guy that continues to impress during training camp is rookie wide receiver Brandin Cooks. The Oregon State product says he’s coming to practice every day looking to get better…

Former Nicholls State player Walter Jones has been hired as an assistant coach under Colonels head coach Seth Thibodeaux.

The McNeese State men’s basketball schedule came out today. The Cowboys have 16 home games, including a match-up with the Ragin Cajuns on December sixth at the Burton Colsieum. McNeese also travels to LSU, Baylor and Mississippi State.

A hearing is now underway in Judge Todd Hernandez’s courtroom over a lawsuit filed by parents and educators who accuse Governor Bobby Jindal of overstepping his authority to block tests associated with Common Core. Another Common Core hearing is scheduled for Friday in Judge Tim Kelly’s courtroom. That lawsuit was filed by legislators who claim BESE and the Department of Education violated state law when it approved the Common Core standards.

Since the BP spill, oyster production along Louisiana’s coast has reached lows that have not been seen in decades. That’s according to Louisiana Oyster Task Force Chairman John Tesvich, who says it’s a challenging time for the industry…

The Lafayette man who is accused of killing 15-year-old Austin Rivault in February of 2013 has had his trial delayed for a fourth time. A Cameron Parish judge agreed to move Seth Fontenot’s trial from September 22nd to December 1st yesterday. Fontenot is facing charges of murder and attempted murder. The victims were allegedly shot by Fontenot and he claims he thought they were robbing him.

Large Carnivore Program Manager, Maria Davidson says the animal could be taken off of the Endangered Species list if the population numbers are strong enough. She says that’ll be up to the US Fish and Wildlife Service..:

The Houma man who is accused of driving drunk into a house in a crash that claimed the life of a 2-year-old baby pleaded not guilty to multiple felonies in court Monday. 22-year-old Tony Milligan faces charges of vehicular homicide, first degree vehicular negligent injury, two counts of careless operation, hit and run and no seat belt. He remains in the Terrebonne Parish Jail on a $300,000 bond.

Louisiana State Police say they busted a man driving through Louisiana on I-12 during a traffic stop with about 300 lbs of suspected marijuana. They say it happened around 9am Sunday morning following a traffic stop close to the I-12, I-55 junction. Troopers arrested the driver 26-year-old Carlos Davis of Greenwood, Mississippi after making the discovery when a positive alert was made by the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s office K-9. The drugs they say are worth about $250,000.

One of the biggest spotlights at LSU’s preseason camp has been the intense battle for the starting quarterback position. Sophomore Anthony Jennings and Freshman Brandon Harris both have stated their intentions to be the man to lead Tigers next season. LSU Offensive Coordinator Cam Cameron says regardless of who wins, everyone has to be ready to run the offense…:

The position is still up for grabs, and could be up until the start of the season.

In high school football news Monday….John Curtis and Evangel Christian Academy have reportedly decided to play up in the state playoffs this season. That means they’ll be in the Division One bracket, which will feature schools from the New Orleans Catholic League.

Nicholls State announced the hiring of Walter Jones as a baseball assistant coach. He’ll be the hitting coach as well as lead the outfielders and assist with the Colonels’ recruiting efforts.

Tulane Coach Curtis Johnson says former Jesuit standout Tanner Lee will likely be his starting quarterback when the Green Wave begin the season at Tulsa on August 28th.

A new state law banning drivers from using their cell phone in a school zone was supposed to go into effect on August 1st, but the bill in its final form from this last legislation session requires signs be posted warning people of the ban. So far various cities and parishes are working to get those signs out and once that happens it will be illegal to use your hand held cell phone while driving through a posted school zone.
