Coach Paul Mainieri announces sophomore right-hander Alden Cartwright will start on the mound for the Tigers tomorrow afternoon. The Baton Rouge product will make his first start of the season, but he’s only expected to pitch a couple of innings.

The LSU softball team got off to a good start at the Women’s College World Series as the Tigers defeated Auburn six to one. Bianka Bell and Kellsi Kloss each hit home runs, while Emily Griggs has three hits. LSU as a team had ten hits on the day, which was enough offense for starting pitcher Carley Hoover. The Tigers will play in a winner’s bracket game tomorrow night against Florida.

LSU’s SEC home opener against Auburn will not be a night game. CBS will televise the game on September 19th, which means a 2:30 kick-off in what could be a very hot Death Valley. And it looks like the regular season finale against Texas A-and-M will be played on a Saturday. That’s because CBS has already picked Arkansas-versus-Missouri for that Friday after Thanksgiving.

And the SEC announces that the men’s basketball schedule is changing to three permanent opponents, which means the Tigers will play Texas A-and-M, Alabama and Arkansas at home and on the road each season.

If the Pelicans want to talk with Tom Thibodeau about their head coaching vacancy, they can now do it. Thibodeau was fired today by the Chicago Bulls after five seasons in the Windy City.

Saints head coach Sean Payton announced today that the Black and Gold will ahve a joint practice with the New England Patriots during training camp. It will take place at the Greenbrier in West Virginia. Payton says the joint practices will take place prior to the Saints hosting New England in week two of the preseason.

Sports Information Director Michael Bonnette says CBS will televise the game on September 19th, which means a 2:30 kick-off in what could be a very hot Death Valley. Athletic Director Joe Alleva says we should hear tomorrow a kick-off time for the regular season finale against Texas A-and-M. Louisiana has its first ever female high school football coach. Susan Gremillion has been hired as the head coach for the Louisiana School for the Deaf in Baton Rouge. Gremillion says being the first woman head football coach is great, but she wants to be the first woman to coach a deaf national championship team…

The Louisiana School for the Deaf competes against similiar schools in other states and Home School Association teams.

According to the Associated Press, the Pelicans have interviewed Jeff Van Gundy for the team’s head coaching job. Van Gundy currently works as a television analyst and he’s a former head coach of the New York Knicks and the Houston Rockets. Former NBA player and head coach Scott Skiles has also reportedly emerged as a candidate as well.

The LSU Softball squad faces Auburn this afternoon in the opening round of the Women’s College World Series. This is the second time Coach Beth Torina has led the Tigers to the W-C-W-S. In 2012 the Tigers reached Oklahoma City, but only scored four total runs and they were eliminated after three games. Torina says this year’s squad has a different mindset…

The LSU softball team will take on SEC rival Auburn this afternoon in Oklahoma City in the opening round of the Women’s College World Series. It’s the fourth ever WCWS appearance for LSU. The Tigers bring a 50-and-12 record into Oklahoma City. They have seven hitters hitting .324 or higher and they have four pitchers who have combined for a team ERA of 1.76. Head Coach Beth Torina says the depth on her team has served them well…

The Pelican’s search for a head coach continues. League sources say the team interviewed Jeff Van Gundy earlier this week. Van Gundy is an eleven year veteran head coach, most recently coaching the Houston Rockets in 2007. Van Gundy’s teams made the playoffs in nine of his eleven seasons.

Louisiana has its first female head football coach in history and she’ll be coaching a deaf squad. Susan Gremillion will be taking over the team at the Louisiana School for the Deaf from her husband Darren. She says she’s extremely excited about the upcoming season and feels LSD is the best kept secret in the state…

The War Eagles are an eight-man football team and they went 7-2 last year. Gremillion says being the first woman head football coach sounds nice but she wants to be the first woman to coach a deaf national championship team.

New Louisiana Tech men’s basketball coach Eric Konkol has added another assistant coach to his staff. Matt McMahon is heading to Ruston after spending the previous four seasons as an assistant at Murray State, who won 25 straight games last season on their way to an Ohio Valley Conference regular season championship. McMahon joins former George Mason star Tony Skinn as an assistant on Konkol’s staff.

Louisiana High School Athletic Association executive director Eddie Bonine is hosting over 60 school administrators in Baton Rouge today in the first of what is expected to be several meetings that will attempt to solve the issues that have led to nonselect versus select split of the high school football playoffs.

The Greater New Orleans Sports Foundation and the Allstate Sugar Bowl have put in a bid to host the College Football Playoff National Championship game in 2019 or 2020. New Orleans is already competing to host the Super Bowls in those same years. Jay Cicero, Greater New Orleans Sports Foundation President says it would be their hope to get both big games in the same year…

The Cleveland Cavaliers punched their ticket to the NBA Finals after a 118-88 blowout of the Atlanta Hawks completed a 4-games-to-none sweep of the Eastern Conference Finals. LeBron James lead he way with 23 points as the Cavs will make their first Finals appearance since 2007. Former Louisiana Tech standout Paul Milsap scored 16 points and pulled down 11 rebounds for the Hawks.

The Greater New Orleans Sports Foundation and the Allstate Sugar Bowl have put in a bid to host the College Football Playoff National Championship game in 2019 or 2020. New Orleans can’t bid on 2018 because The Big Easy is already going to host the National Semifinal game that year. Greater New Orleans Sports Foundation President Jay Cicero says there will be site visits over the summer and the decision will be made mid-October. He says one of their main concerns is brand new stadiums, but a lot of those cities can’t offer all New Orleans has to offer…

LSU offensive tackle Jevonte Domond has been charged with felony domestic abuse battery with strangulation. According to the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s office, Domond had a dispute with his finance next to the crib of their newborn baby, when the six-foot-six football player grabbed the victim by the neck and lifted her off the ground. Domond appeared in one game for the Tigers last season and LSU Sports Information Director Michael Bonnette says Domond has been suspended from the team.

The LSU baseball team is getting ready for the Baton Rouge Regional. There’s a chance the Tigers could play Tulane on Saturday night or in the regional championship game on Sunday. LSU shortstop Alex Bregman says he would love to see that match-up…

The LSU baseball team received the number two overall seed in the NCAA Baseball Tournament. The number one seed went to UCLA. Joining the Tigers in the Baton Rouge Regional will be Lehigh, Tulane, and UNC Wilmington. LSU will face Lehigh, the Patriot League champion, Friday at 3PM. The Mountain Hawks come into the regional with a 25-29 overall record. The Green Wave will take on the Seahawks, the Colonial Athletic Association tournament champions, Friday night at seven.

UL-Lafayette will play in the Houston Regional. The Ragin Cajuns will take on Rice Friday at 2:30PM. Houston and Houston Baptist, the Southland Conference tournament champions, are the other two teams in the regional. They’ll face each other Friday at seven. The winner of this Regional will take on the winner of the Baton Rouge Regional in the Super Regionals.

Disappointment in Hammond as Southeastern Louisiana failed to make the 64-team tournament field.

In college softball, the number eight LSU Tigers scored four in the first inning yesterday and fended off several rallies to defeat the sixteenth ranked Arizona Wildcats 10-5 to win their Super Regional and advance to the Women’s College World Series. This is the Tigers’ fourth ever berth in the World Series and they will face Auburn Thursday at 1:30 in Oklahoma City.

School Officials say a Ouachita Parish High School student-athlete died in a swimming accident in Arkansas over the weekend. They say Kenton Norman was with his family in Hot Springs Village, Arkansas when he drowned trying to swim to an inflatable trampoline in a lake. Norman was a freshman last season on the Ouachita Lions football team.

In the NBA Eastern Conference Finals, the Cleveland Cavaliers take a three games to none lead over the Atlanta Hawks after a 114-111 overtime win last night. LeBron James lead the way for the Cavs with a triple-double; 37 points, 18 rebounds, and 13 assists. Former Louisiana Tech standout Paul Milsaps scored 22 for the Hawks in a losing effort. Game four of this series is tomorrow night.
