Tropical storm Zeta is beginning to strengthen. The 10 o’clock advisory from the National Hurricane Center indicated maximum sustained winds increased from 65 to 70 miles per hour, just a few miles below hurricane one status. Zeta is 435 miles south of New Orleans moving northwest at 15 miles per hour and a turn to the north is expected overnight.  Zeta is forecast to make landfall Wednesday afternoon. A hurricane warning is in effect from Morgan City to the Mississippi/Alabama border.

Zeta is expected to be more of a wind event than a rain event, with rainfall amounts of two to four inches. State climatologist Barry Keim says a storm surge warning of two to six feet is in place for basically all southeast Louisiana.

Lieutenant Brennan Matherne with the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office says that Lafourche parish is expecting significant winds to be the biggest impact from this storm.

Zeta is expected to be more of a wind event than a rain event, with rainfall amounts of 2 to 4 inches. State climatologist Barry Keim says a storm surge warning is in place from the Atchafalaya River to the Pearl River, basically all of southeast Louisiana, between two and six feet.

Zeta is projected to be a fast-moving storm which should help reduce the damage, however, when the storm finally passes through, John Rahaim (Ram) the Director of Emergency Preparedness for St. Bernard Parish expects a wide variety of damage to be present in the area.

A hurricane warning is in effect from Morgan City to the Mississippi/Alabama border and a storm surge warning for the mouth of the Atchafalaya River to Navarre Florida.

If you haven’t applied for FEMA aid related to damage from Hurricane Laura you still have some time to register a claim, the agency has pushed the deadline back to November 27th. FEMA Spokesperson Melissa Wilkins says FEMA assistance can cover a range of expenses from housing to medical care.

Tropical Storm Zeta is expected to make landfall near southeast Louisiana on Wednesday night as a category 1 hurricane.  Residents in the area are bracing for impact as Louisiana will be hit by yet another storm.  John Rahaim is the Director of Emergency Preparedness for St. Bernard parish and he says that what is really putting citizens on edge is the fact that this storm will hit at night.

Also named in the suit is Lafayette Consolidated Government and 10 police officers. Family attorney Chase Trichell says the family is not being properly informed about what happened the day Pellerin was fatally shot.

Governor Edwards files a lawsuit defending his authority to issue and enforce public health restrictions against a legislative petition signed by the State House that claims to have stripped him of those powers.

Edwards says the Louisiana Constitution does not allow for one chamber of the Legislature to terminate a public health emergency issued by the Governor.

The Governor also adds that the statute the petition filers rely upon requires them to consult with state health officials before filing the petition, a step Edwards says they did not take.

65 GOP lawmakers in the House signed the petition Friday. The Senate President says a similar petition was not floated in the Upper Chamber due to concerns that they did not have data supporting a repeal.

The Speaker hopes the petition will force Edwards to the table to negotiate over giving lawmakers more of a say-so in pandemic policy. Edwards calls it dangerous politics.

It’s the last day of early voting in the Bayou State and Secretary of State Kyle Ardoin expects another busy day with as many as 80 thousand voters expected to cast their ballot. Due to the pandemic, three extra days and longer hours were added to the early voting period. At the end of this extended version of early voting Ardoin, predicts as many as 950-thousand Louisianans will have performed their civic duty.

Despite COVID mitigation efforts and record-breaking turnout, the average wait time to vote is approximately 25 mins. Ardoin says poll workers are doing an amazing job.

Ardoin says with approximately 200-thousand absentee ballots and three-quarters of a million in-person early voters, poll workers are ready for a well-deserved break.
