The mother of the 12-year-old New Orleans boy whose body was pulled from a lagoon near the home he disappeared from 12 days earlier has been arrested. Andrew Greenstein reports.

Poultry company Foster Farms has finalized its sale of its facilities in Farmerville, Arcadia and Athens to North Carolina-based Case Farms. Foster Farms CEO Jayson Penn says they hope to see continued success of northeast Louisiana’s poultry operations under Case Farms.

It was 90 years ago today when former Governor Huey Long was shot inside the State Capitol. Two days later, Long, who was a U.S. Senator at the time, would die at the age of 42 as a result from injuries suffered in that shooting. Retired LSU College of Business Dean Richard White wrote a book on Huey Long’s life; he said there were two Huey Longs – first, there was the Huey Long before his impeachment.

But then, White said Long became a different man after his impeachment, saying that he vigorously went after his enemies.

The mother of Bryan Vasquez, the 12-year-old non-verbal autistic boy found dead in a lagoon last month 12 days after disappearing from his home has been arrested. New Orleans Police Deputy Superintendent Hans Ganthier (GAHN-thee-ay) says 34-year-old Hilda Vasquez was arrested yesterday.

Cut 6 (05) “…and negligent homicide.”

(Hilda Vasquez is charged with second-degree cruelty to a juvenile and negligent homicide.) The coroner ruled that Bryan Vasquez had drowned, with the secondary cause being blunt force trauma caused by an alligator. Another deputy superintendent, Nicholas Gernon, says this is not the first time Hilda had been negligent or abusive towards her son.

In fact, Gernon says Hilda was convicted of abusing Bryan when he was just three months old.

Gernon would not go into detail as to the circumstances of DCFS returning Bryan to the home or when it happened. Hilda Vasquez was booked into the Orleans Parish Jail.

Green says two of the suspects were arrested in Texas, one in Lake Charles and the fourth in Lafayette…

Riley Francis had been in critical condition in a Baton Rouge hospital since the shooting. Green says a verbal argument between two men at the balloon release at Deballion Park led to gunfire…

Calcasieu Parish Sheriff deputies say an impaired driver killed a 19-year-old on Saturday in a three-vehicle crash in Moss Bluff. The victim, Gideon Capitano, died from his injuries early Sunday morning. Deputies say 24-year-old Shelby Wood showed signs of impairment and performed poorly in sobriety testing and is now facing several charges including vehicular homicide.

There are 51 ICE detainees housed in Angola with plans to hold more than 400. ACLU Louisiana legal director Nora Ahmed says immigration detention is a civil process to ensure court appearances, not punishment for criminal behavior…

Angola has a notorious reputation because it was once slave plantation. In the 1960s and 70s, there were numerous incidents of extreme violence and even in recent history there have been accusations of inhumane conditions.

U-S Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem says they absolutely chose Angola to send the worst of the worst ICE detainees because of its reputation…

ACLU of Louisiana says the housing of undocumented immigrants convicted of serious crimes at the Louisiana State Penitentiary is a dangerous disregard of the legal system. There are 51 ICE detainees in Camp 57 at Angola with plans to hold more than 400. ICE Deputy Director Madison Sheahan says the plan is for these detainees to eventually be sent back to their home country…

The Department of Health and other organizations are hosting 988 day at the Capitol today. Sherrard (SHARE-id) Crespo with VIA LINK says mental health is a major issue and unjustifiably stigmatized.

She hopes state and federal funding of the 988 suicide helpline continues.

Governor Landry’s wallet is 900 dollars lighter this morning. Steven Procopio, the president of the Public Affairs Research Council, says Landry was fined over non-disclosure of trips he took on other people’s aircraft while he was attorney general. Procopio says the trips were paid for by others but were for public purposes. He says we will never know if the fines are appropriate because of changes in the laws that govern ethics investigations.
