Democrat Henry Whitehorn has been elected the first African American Sheriff of Caddo Parish. Whitehorn won with 53 percent of the votes beating his opponent Republican John Nickelson. A one vote margin by Whitehorn in November landed the election results in court after Nickelson demanded a recount. Whitehorn will be sworn in as sheriff on July 1st.

The Criminal Justice Committee unanimously passed legislation to ban the sale, use, and possession of nitrous oxide statewide.  Bill author, Rep Joe Stagni (Stag Knee) says Nitrous oxide has become a highly addictive drug with devastating consequences.

High winds, hail and isolated tornadoes are possible as a cold front will sweep across the state today. LSU Climatologist Barry Keim says the greatest risk for severe weather could be found in northeast Louisiana..

Another tough weekend for the LSU baseball team. The Tigers dropped two of three to Florida and they were run ruled 12-to-2 in eight innings yesterday. The Tigers are 2-and-4 in the SEC and will begin a series against top ranked Arkansas on Thursday following a home game against Southeastern Louisiana tomorrow night. The entire state is under a wind advisory today as a strong storm system will impact Louisiana. We could expect sustained winds of 15 to 25 miles, with wind gusts up 45-miles per hour. Strong storms are possible especially for northeast Louisiana and the Delta parishes.

Louisiana lawmakers are looking to ban nitrous oxide. It’s known as a party drug and sold at gas stations and smoke shops, but it could be potentially deadly. The House Criminal Justice Committee heard emotional testimony from a father whose daughter bought a cannister at a gas station and hours later found herself fighting for her life…

A Merryville dog owner sought revenge by fatally shooting a dog after it allegedly attacked his dog. So, we asked Legal Analyst Franz Borghardt if it is legal to shoot another dog in another person’s yard if it attacked yours.

Borghardt says the owner of the labrador (number one) saw the man enter her backyard before gunfire rang out. He says the state’s statute of cruelty to animals prohibits a person from injuring any animal belonging to another person.

Boghardt says if the owner felt he had to rescue his dog from the labrador, he should have taken a different approach to handle the situation. The owner of the labrador can seek restitution or criminal charges.

Authorities are conducting a criminal investigation into the shooting of the Labrador.

For the second straight weekend, LSU baseball dropped an SEC series and for the second straight Sunday, the Tigers were run-ruled. Florida beat the Tigers 12-2 in eight innings yesterday.
