A fight is brewing between state lawmakers, who passed a bill allowing telemedicine visits for medical cannabis prescriptions and the state Board of medical Examiners, who says doctors must first see the patient in-person. Gretna Representative Joe Marino is the law’s author. He says he wants the attorney general to make a ruling, because the current dispute hurts rural residents, who rely on telemedicine…:

FEMA’s “Risk Rating 2.0” rate formula has meant drastically high premium increases for thousands of Louisianans. Some had to just give it up. Scalise says the House passed a flood insurance reform bill years ago, but it was killed in the Senate. He aims to revive that bill…:

Look for hot and sweaty pre-Christmas weather for the next week at least. State Climatologist Barry Keim says afternoon highs will range from the 70’s, then the mid-60’s…then into the 80’s. The reason? Warm wet air from the Gulf…:

LSU is heading to the Citrus Bowl where they’ll face Purdue for the first time ever on the gridiron. The Boilermakers are champions of the Big Ten West. The game will be on January 2nd in Orlando. There’s a chance some major contributors to the 2022 team will not play in the bowl game and instead prepare themselves for the NFL draft. Coach Brian Kelly says they’ll have those discussions with those players…

The Ragin Cajuns will spend Christmas week in Shreveport as they’ll play Houston in the Independence Bowl on December 23rd. U-L Lafayette is making a school-record fifth consecutive bowl game appearance and first-ever trip to the Indy Bowl.

The Saints visit the Tampa Bay Buccaneers tonight in Monday night football. New Orleans is four and eight, but still alive to win the NFC South as the Bucs are in first place with a five and-six record. New Orleans defensive end Cam Jordan says they can’t suffer any more losses…:

The game will kick off at 7:15. The Bucs are a three-point favorite.

The Pelicans won their 4th straight game beating the Denver Nuggets 121-106 yesterday. Jose Alvarado put on quite a show in the game posting a career-high 38-points. The Pels are now 15-and-8 and will host Detroit on Wednesday.

Northwestern State won its sixth straight game last night and improved to 8-and-2 on the season with a thrilling 84-82 win over Southern. DeMarcus Sharp hit a jump shot at the buzzer for the win, handing the Golden Eagles their first loss on the season.

Trial began today for a Baton Rouge woman accused of poisoning two men; her husband and a long-term boyfriend. Meshell Hale allegedly killed Damian Skipper in 2015. An autopsy detected the poison in his system. She’s also accused of killing husband Arthur Noflin in 2016 by a similar method. Noflin has a $750-thousand insurance policy, with Hale as sole beneficiary.

It may be Christmastime, but warm and muggy weather is expected across Louisiana for about the next week. Stat Climatologist Barry Keim says temperatures are running about 15 degrees above normal for early December, and Thursday we should see afternoon highs in the 80’s. After Thursday however, things will cool off a little bit…:

Another Louisiana high school was locked down today for yet another threat. This time it was Port Barre High, where a bomb threat NOTE was posted on a bathroom wall. This is that school’s third threat in two weeks. Numerous schools across the state have had bomb threats and threats of violence made against them.

Only about 15-percent of registered voters have voted or are expected to vote in Saturday’s election. Ballots statewide will have three important constitutional amendments to decide, plus some runoffs and other local initiatives. The author of a law allowing telemedicine appointments for new medical marijuana patients says the state board that governs doctors cannot stop doctors from prescribing medical marijuana to new telemedicine patients without an in-person visit first. Gretna state Representative Joe Marino is the author of the law.

The Board of Medical Examiners recently refused to change its policy about telemedicine and new medical marijuana patients. Marino says he is seeking an attorney general’s opinion today.

Marino says the board’s decision has a chilling effect on doctors who won’t risk their medical licenses if the rules are unclear. He says the confused situation hurts rural patients the most because they rely on telemedicine.

Deputy Secretary for Outreach Joel Watson says 110-thousand votes were cast for early voting either in person or by absentee ballot from November 26th through December third.

Watson says just under 39-thousand votes were absentee ballots. When you compare the predicted turnout for this election to previous December elections Watson says it’s about on track. In 2018 he says turnout was almost 18 percent and in 2020 after the presidential election when there was a congressional runoff and amendments on the ballot.

When you look at the party breakdown for the early voting for the December 10th election Watson says 47 percent were Democrat and 39 percent Republican. He says typically more Democrats vote early and there are more registered Democrats in the state versus Republicans.

FEMA’s Risk Rating 2.0 pricing system has kicked in; causing dramatic increases in flood coverage for tens of thousands of Louisianans. Scalise says that’ll be one of his projects for 2023…:

Scalise says flood rates have increased so dramatically that untold numbers of homeowners have had to let their flood insurance coverage lapse because they simply cannot afford it any longer. He says FEMA has been reluctant to even explain the sharp spike in rates to Congress…:

Scalise says House republicans passed a National Flood Insurance program reform bill a few years ago to control rising costs, but it was killed in the Senate. He aims to revive that bill…:

A Sabine Parish volunteer reserve Sheriff’s deputy has been fired, after he was arrested over the weekend in a huge barroom brawl in the town of Zwolle. Kobe Cartinez, of Many, is charged with 2nd-degree battery. He is out on $8000 bond. Two other men were also arrested.

Police in Monroe say they responded to four overdoses deaths within a 2-day span, from December 1st thru the 3rd. On the MPD Facebook page they say all four are fentanyl-related. Detectives are working toward tracking down the source of the deadly drugs.

With the holiday shopping season up and running for over a week now, economists are predicting spending this year to increase anywhere from six to eight percent from last year.  LSU Marketing Associate Professor Dan Rice says online shopping is up two percent from last year and the majority of online transactions are purchased via a smartphone versus a tablet.

After losing in the SEC Championship game, LSU will have an opportunity to win its tenth game of the season in Orlando when they play Purdue in the Citrus Bowl on January second at noon. Federal officials say inflation has slowed somewhat in recent weeks. But is it enough to be felt at street level, by the average consumer?
