LSU sophomore defensive tackle Maason Smith suffered a torn ACL in the game and will reportedly miss the rest of the season. The injury happened as Smith celebrated a tackle by LSU safety Major Burns on the 7th play of the opening series.

The Tigers will face Southern Saturday night for the first time ever in football. The Jags defeated Florida Memorial in their opening game by a score of 86-0.

Committee Chair Senator Fred Mills says they want to know how the department will address recent failures, mainly a toddler overdose death and alleged child sexual abuse by a foster parent.

Mills says the committee wants to know the department’s plans going forward and they’ll also review personnel to see if Secretary Marketa Garner Walters’ statements of staffing shortages are a contributing factor.

He says the committee will also investigate why employees have left the department.

Mills says he expects committee members to directly question Secretary Walters along with division heads at the first oversight committee meeting.

Juvenile crime in Louisiana has consistently made the headlines in the last two years, with multiple escapes from youth detention centers and what appears to be more violent crimes committed by teens. Louisiana Corrections Secretary Jimmy Le Blanc attributes the increase to multiple factors.

After multiple escapes from the Bridge City Center for Youth in Jefferson Parish, a plan to move violent juvenile offenders to a more secure location at Angola is on hold pending a hearing. Le Blanc says however when you compare juvenile crime to incarcerated adults in Louisiana…

And with construction underway for a new women’s prison, the Office of Juvenile Justice is having to look at ways to make existing youth facilities more secure. Le Blanc credits the correctional system’s rehabilitation and reform efforts for helping reduce the recidivism rates of adult inmates.

A hearing on the state’s plan to move violent youth offenders to Angola is scheduled for September 15th.

Former New Orleans Mayor Moon Landrieu has passed away at the age of 92. After serving as a state representative and a New Orleans City Council member, Landrieu served as the city’s 56th mayor from 1970 to 1978. Landrieu pushed for the integration of drinking establishments and political analyst Clancy Dubos says he significantly increased the number of black employees working for the city

Dubos says Landrieu pushed for the construction of the 103-million dollar Louisiana Superdome on Poydras Street. He says that allowed for downtown New Orleans to thrive, while other major cities saw their downtowns deteriorate.

LSU was the U-S Housing and Urban Development Secretary from 1979 to 1981.

Landrieu had nine children, Mitch served as mayor of New Orleans from 2010 to 2018, one of his daughters Mary, served three terms as a U-S Senator, and another daughter Madeleine is a former appellate judge and now dean of Loyola University’s law school.

And if you are able to find markdowns on beef it might be a good time to stock the freezer because Foster says it looks like prices aren’t going down anytime soon.

According to Chip Kline, executive director of the Louisiana Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority Louisiana’s one point three-billion-dollar investment in coastal restoration projects is paying off and one of the most significant projects involves dredging the Mississippi River near its mouth to fill in sinking marshlands.

Congresswoman Julia Letlow is urging Louisiana to formally request USDA assistance for farmers impacted by excessive rainfall last month. It’s Labor Day so many are enjoying a day off today. Economist Loren Scott says the state has only recovered 69-percent of the jobs lost during the height of the pandemic. Scott says active hurricane seasons in 2020 and 2021 has slowed down that recovery…

The state Louisiana Workforce Commission has been touting a low unemployment rate this summer, but Scott says many people have quit looking for jobs.

Fifth District Congresswoman Julia Letlow says Louisiana farmers need federal assistance as a result of the excessive rainfall last month. LSU Ag Center soybean specialist Doctor David Moseley says in Avoyelles Parish one consultant says about 20 to 30-percent of the soybean crops had damage…

The state’s Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority says it’s been making strides in the fight against coastal land loss, but a large source of funding is set to come to an end in 2032 and that’s BP oil spill settlement money. CPRA executive director Chip Kline says they are aware of the 2032 fiscal cliff and discussing the issue with federal officials…

Senator Bill Cassidy has a bill that was approved by a US Senate committee in July that would send billions of dollars for coastal restoration to Louisiana and other Gulf states.

As expected, Jayden Daniels started at quarterback and went the whole way. He was running for his life for much of the game as the Tigers new offensive line struggled. Daniels threw for 209 yards and two touchdowns and he also rushed for a game-high 114 yards.

Game week has arrived for the Saints. They will face the Falcons in Atlanta on Sunday.

The Ragin Cajuns won their 14th straight game, which is the nation’s longest winning streak on Saturday, as U-L Lafayette defeated Southeastern Louisiana 24-7. In his first start at Q-B, Chandler Fields threw for 173 yards and a couple of touchdowns to Johnny Lumpkin. Eric Garror also returned a punt 83 yards for a touchdown.

In other action on Saturday, Texas trounced ULM 52-10. The Warhawks allowed touchdowns on a blocked punt and interception return.

Arkansas State clobbered Grambling 58-3. South Alabama thumped Nicholls 48-7. Tulane trounced UMass 42-10. Second-ranked Montana shutout Northwestern State 47-0, while fourth-ranked Montana State defeated McNeese 40-17.

Looking ahead to this Saturday, several in-state match-ups highlight the schedule, Nicholls at ULM, Northwestern State faces Grambling in Shreveport and Southern and LSU meet for the first time ever in football in Tiger Stadium.
