The number of children who have died from COVID has increased to 17 as the state health department reports a child between the ages of 0 and four years old died from the virus. It’s the eighth pediatric death during this fourth surge.

In an effort to boost the state’s vaccination rate, Louisiana has expanded its shot for 100-dollar campaign to anyone who gets their first COVID shot in the month of October.

Congress this past week finally approved a funding bill that will send 28 billion dollars to states that suffered natural disasters in 2020. It’s a big day of college football in the SEC. At 11 AM, second-ranked Georgia hosts eighth-ranked Arkansas and at 2:30 it’s top-ranked Alabama versus 12th ranked Ole Miss.

ULM and La Tech are on the road facing ranked teams. The Warhawks are at 16th ranked Coastal Carolina, while the Bulldogs visit 23rd ranked North Carolina State. The Ragin Cajuns are at 3-and-0 South Alabama.

The Saints return to the Superdome tomorrow for the first time since playing a preseason game a week before Hurricane Ida hit. Running back Alvin Kamara expects an electric atmosphere in their game against the New York Giants…

The Giants come into Sunday’s game winless at 0-3. New York will be without three starters, guard Ben Bredeson and wide receivers Sterling Shepard and Darius Slayton. Shepard is the team’s leading receiver. The Saints are down two starters, left tackle Terron Armstead and center Erik McCoy. McCoy will miss his third straight game because of a calf injury. Armstead injured his elbow in last Sunday’s win over the Patriots.

Also on Sunday, Carolina is at Dallas, Atlanta hosts the Washington Football Team and Tampa visits the Patriots in Tom Brady’s return to New England.

You won’t find Lake Charles Mayor Nic Hunter satisfied with the supplemental disaster relief bill signed into law yesterday.  That’s because only a small fraction of the 28.6-billion dollars earmarked for disaster recovery nationwide will ever make it to Louisiana. Mayor Hunter appears disheartened by the lack of attention the feds have paid to the destruction and misery his town and southwest Louisiana have gone through since last year.

Louisiana food stamp recipients are receiving a historic increase in their monthly benefits of about 36-dollars a month per person. That word comes from Shavana Howard, DCFS Assistant Secretary for Family Support. Howard says upping the monthly maximum for SNAP benefits will give recipients a better shot at affording the cost of a healthy diet and dealing with higher food prices overall.

Nothing official from Auburn, but LSU Coach Ed Orgeron said this week that he expects the War Eagles will start T-J Finley at quarterback tomorrow night as the SEC West rivals meet at 8 PM. Finley replaced a struggling Bo Nix last week to help Auburn get past Georgia State.

Saints linebacker Demario Davis was back at practice today after missing yesterday for the birth of his daughter. Left tackle Terron Armstead and Center Erik McCoy have been ruled out for Sunday’s game because of injuries.

ULM and Louisiana Tech are both on the road facing ranked teams tomorrow. The Bulldogs are at 23rd ranked North Carolina State, who is coming off a double-overtime win over Clemson. They held the Tigers to 214 total yards.

The Warhawks take a two game winning streak to 16th ranked Coastal Carolina. The Chanticleers last loss in Sun Belt Play was to ULM in 2019.

The Ragin Cajuns are at undefeated South Alabama. The Jaguars have wins over Southern Miss, Bowling Green, and Alcorn State. South Al enters tomorrow’s game coming off a bye week. Coach Billy Napier says having an open week this early in the season can be good or bad…

For the first time in over 40 years, an increase in federal funding for food stamp programs will mean a boost for EBT card holders in Louisiana. Shavana Howard, with DCFS (who administer the program) says the increase will help out a lot of people…:

The local civil service board voted to bust Chief Carl Givens to captain, after finding his conduct during a dispute with a neighbor unbecoming an officer. Givens reportedly brandished a gun and fired shots into the air. Bastrop is now seeking a new Chief. Givens’ lawyer intends to appeal.
