At tonight’s St. Tammany Parish Council Meeting, members will vote on whether to grant a parish-wide vote to be put on the November ballot to allow a casino to relocate to the parish. Slidell Senator Sharon Hewitt sponsored legislation for a public vote and now the parish council will decide its next fate.

But St. Tammany Sheriff Randy Smith opposes a casino stating it will only increase crime in the area, crimes like human trafficking. Smith says they work with federal and state law enforcement on combatting human trafficking which he says is already an issue on the I-10/12 corridor that runs through Slidell.

The meeting is scheduled for 5:30 tonight.

The gig is up for a Plaquemine man who was arrested for impersonating a police officer after he allegedly pulled over an off-duty parish deputy. Assumption Parish Sheriff’s spokesperson Lonny Cavalier says 27-year-old Vincent Vinny Marks is no stranger to law enforcement, he was involved in an incident earlier this year and the same deputy he pulled over answered the call.

Marks is charged with a felony count of impersonating a peace officer.

America’s Health Rankings 2021 Health Disparities Report finds before just COVID Louisiana saw an increase in some health issues. UnitedHealth Group CMO Dr. Ana Fuentevilla (fwent-uh-vee-uh) says there was a 33 percent increase in depression among Louisiana adults who reported only having a high school diploma.

The city of Alexandria will not put on a public fireworks show this weekend. Council members say they would rather use the 15-thousand dollars on other things. But there will be a fireworks show across the river. Pineville will host one on Saturday night at Lake Buhlow.

Legal sports betting in Louisiana might not happen by the time the football season starts as lawmakers had hoped when they approved the framework for legal sports betting. That’s because the Gaming Control Board is without a chairman and it’s the board’s responsibility to issue sports betting licenses and finalize the rules.

An estimated 25 percent of the current COVID cases in Louisiana are believed to be the more dangerous Delta variant strain that first emerged in India. That’s according to State Health Officer Dr. Joe Kanter who says the number of new Delta cases is doubling every two to three weeks, raising a concern we could face a new spike in overall COVID cases.

One of the first priorities for new LSU Head Baseball Coach Jay Johnson is to hire a staff, including a pitching and hitting coach. Johnson says he will not rush to hire someone because he wants to make sure he finds the right fit.

Kendall Rogers of D-1-Baseball-dot-com reports Johnson tried to hire Texas Tech recruiting coordinator and assistant coach J-Bob Thomas, but Thomas is staying in Lubbock and he’ll get a pay raise.

But Rogers reports Arizona All-American Jacob Berry has entered the transfer portal and there’s a strong likelihood he’ll end up at LSU. Berry hit .352 with 17 home runs and 70 RBIs during his freshman campaign.

LSU Forward Darius Days is returning for his senior season. Days averaged 12 points and eight rebounds a game last season and shot 40-percent from three-point territory. Meanwhile, former LSU Tiger Josh Leblanc announces he has signed at U-A-B.

Jacque Vaughn has pulled his name out of consideration for the Pelicans head coaching job. Vaughn has been an assistant for the Nets for the last five seasons and according to ESPN Vaughn wants to stay close to his two teenage sons and is no longer seeking any head coaching job.

LSU Football Coach Ed Orgeron told an ESPN Baton Rouge radio station that left tackle Dare Rosenthal has entered the NCAA transfer portal. Rosenthal is reportedly leaving LSU after violating a school policy.

The college world series is headed to a winner take all scenario as Mississippi State clobbered Vanderbilt 13 to 2 last night to even the championship series one game apiece. Game 3 is tonight at six o’clock.

The number of new Delta variant cases in Louisiana continues to grow, concerning state health officials that it could lead to another spike in cases. Matt Doyle has the story.

Since the state opened registration for a two-point-three million dollar lottery incentive, COVID-19 vaccinations have risen by 14-percent. But the number of people getting vaccinated each day is about 15-hundred less than it was in May.

The St. Tammany Parish Council votes tonight on whether a referendum will go on the November 13th ballot asking if voters want a 325-million riverboat casino in the Slidell area. Slidell Senator Sharon Hewitt pushed the legislation through the state legislature in order to give the St. Tammany Parish council this opportunity…

But St. Tammany Sheriff Randy Smith and Slidell Police Chief Randy Fandal oppose the casino over concerns it will lead to higher crime.

27-year-old Vincent Vinny Marks of Plaquemine has been arrested for the false impersonation of a peace officer. Assumption Parish Sheriff’s office spokesperson Lonny Cavalier says Marks got caught after presenting a badge to an off-duty deputy and representing himself as a police officer. Cavalier says they believe this isn’t the first time Marks has done this as they had an encounter with him earlier this year…

Marks was booked Monday night in the Assumption Parish Detention Center on a felony count of impersonating a peace officer. Cavalier says they believe this isn’t the first time Marks has done this.

Smith quoted FBI data on the types of crimes associated with gambling.

Senator Hewitt says some see the casino as a great economic development opportunity for the parish.

Peninsula Pacific Entertainment has already stated they will make a $325-million investment in the new casino in hopes of luring gamblers that usually visit Mississippi’s casinos to stay in the state. P2E has guaranteed to hire 50-percent of their employees from the parish.

About a dozen Republican Congressmen are set to accompany President Donald Trump on a trip to the US –Mexico border Wednesday. Among those in attendance are two of Louisiana’s own, Congressman Mike Johnson and Congressman Clay Higgins.

The pandemic is responsible for a fireworks shortage this 4th of July. Regional Manager for Little Dixie Fireworks Ashley Routon says with more people gathering this year due to eased health restrictions, she says there’s even higher demand.

Routon says factory shutdowns in China and shipping issues are major factors in the shortage of fireworks. She says they anticipate selling out this year, and possibly even before the 4th.

Kentwood native Jaime Lynn Spears is disputing allegations that she helped facilitate an allegedly abusive conservatorship of her pop star sister Britney Spears. Jaime Lynn denies that she was taking advantage of her sister’s wealth as the main trustee of the Britney Spears estate.

LSU football coach Ed Orgeron has been added as a defendant in a Title Nine lawsuit against the university by current and former students who say the school mishandled campus rape and sexual misconduct claims. Advocate newspaper reporter Andrea Gallo says Orgeron’s inclusion appears to be linked to an allegation first reported by USA Today that Orgeron had been told that running back Derrius Guice allegedly raped a student.

When that story was first reported by USA Today, Orgeron said he was not aware of the rape allegations against Guice and that he never said that to the victim’s boyfriend.

A lawsuit filed against LSU for the school’s alleged mishandling of campus rape and sexual misconduct has been amended to now include coach Ed Orgeron. Advocate newspaper reporter Andrea Gallo says Orgeron inclusion appears to be linked to an allegation that Orgeron knew about Derrius Guice’s rape allegations. Allegations that Gallo says were not in the Husch Blackwell report.

Orgeron said he was not aware of the rape allegations against Guice.

Lafayette-based food delivery service Waitr has agreed to pay a similar California business by the name of Waiter, that’s W-A-I-T-E-R $4.7 million over trademark issues. The local Waitr, that’s waiter without an E trademarked their company in 2016 and the California company in 2000.  The local Waitr is also rebranding their name and a company spokesperson said they agreed to settle the suit to avoid further litigation.

There’s a nationwide shortage of fireworks this year so if you’re planning on lighting up the skies this weekend you might want to make your purchase sooner than later. Regional Manager for Little Dixie Fireworks Ashley Routon says it depends on where you purchase your explosives if they will have a large selection or not this year.
