Southeast Louisiana voters decide who will represent the state’s second congressional district in DC Saturday. UNO Political Science Professor Ed Chervenak says the heated race between Democrats Karen Carter Peterson and Troy Carter is not about the issues.

Chervenak says the race comes down to likeability between the candidates and their ability to turn out the vote. He says with voter turnout expected to be between 15 and 20 percent it’s definitely a challenge.

Both candidates are from New Orleans and serve in the Louisiana Senate. Chervenak says Carter received the endorsement of outgoing Congressman Cedric Richmond…

The DEA is holding a semi-annual prescription drug take-back day throughout the State tomorrow from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.  This allows you to turn in your unused or unwanted prescription drugs so that they can be disposed of properly.  Special agent Randy Harness says getting rid of these drugs might save someone’s life.

Harness says that this take-back event is vital because overdose deaths are on the rise and pain meds are a major reason…

Assistant special agent Mike Zaiter says while most people believe they can handle their prescriptions responsibly, abusing the drugs isn’t hard.

The wife of one of the missing crewmembers from the Seacor lift boat that capsized last Tuesday files a $25-million lawsuit. Loyola University Political Science Professor Dane Ciolino says anytime there’s a workplace accident that results in the loss of life or major injury there’s going to be a civil lawsuit, but who can be named in the suit remains the question.

Ciolino says this suit is most likely the first of many to be filed and could take years to settle. He says it’s a matter of who’s responsible and why and how much damage is suffered by the plaintiffs as a result.

Most industrial lawsuits are settled before they go to court and Ciolino believes that will be the same with this lawsuit.

Ciolino says he’s actually surprised it took as long as it did for a lawsuit to be filed despite the tragedy taking place less than two weeks ago.

The plant would provide up to 32-million gallons of renewable fuel annually, 83-percent of the final product is expected to be renewable diesel.

Edwards says the project is also great for the environment as the state seeks to address climate change. He says the refinery would remove more carbon from the environment than it produces…

Edwards says the state has established a goal of net-zero emissions by 2050. He says this biodiesel plant is a step in the right direction

1140 Sportscast 4/23

The LSU baseball team got a win in game-one against ninth-ranked Ole Miss 5-4.  Freshman Dylan Crews launched a go-ahead,two-run home run in the seventh inning.  Reliever Devin Fontenot tossed three shutout innings, and the senior right-hander recorded a big strikeout for the final out on the game.  Here’s Fontenot on big-moment.

First pitch for game two is tonight at 6:30 as AJ Labas will take the mound for the Tigers.

The Pelicans ended a four-game losing streak after a 135-100 win over the Orlando Magic.   New Orleans shot 56-percent from the field and forward Brandon Ingram scored 27 points in 29 minutes, while Zion Williamson had 23 points in 23 minutes. The Pels host San Antonio tomorrow night.

Because of the expectation of stormy weather tonight, several games will start early. 14th ranked Louisiana Tech and Marshall will play at 2 PM, the Ragin Cajuns and LIttle Rock will also start at 2. While ULM and Southern get underway at one.

The NCAA has made some changes to college football’s overtime rules in an effort to shorten games.  Teams will now have to go for 2 starting with their second overtime possession.  Beginning in the third overtime, each team will get one play to score from the 3-yard line.

In last night’s Ragin Cajuns spring football game, veteran quarterback Levi Lewis threw for 167 yards. Back-up Chandler Fields was 12 of 15 for 136 yards. Chris Smith rushed for 61 yards as he looks to lock down the role as the Cajuns lead back.

Louisiana Tech will close out its spring by holding a spring game at noon. J-D Head and Aaron Allen are in a heated raced to be the quarterback next season. Former St. Thomas More standout Caleb Holstein is also expected to get some snaps tomorrow.

The restaurant industry continues to face hurdles with the pandemic but instead of a lack of customers, it’s employees. Louisiana Restaurant Association President Stan Harris says members are having trouble finding enough workers.

Harris says boosted unemployment benefits are hurting the industry.

House Health and Welfare advances legislation expanding the state medical marijuana program to include smoke-able “raw” marijuana. Bill author, Houma Representative, and Republican Tanner Magee says our neighbors in Mississippi and Arkansas have OK’d the sale, and we need to catch up or our state’s program could collapse…

The final vote in committee was 12-1, and the bill now heads to the House floor. Governor Edwards says he is inclined to support the bill.

A wife of one of the crew members presumed dead from the Seacor lift boat that capsized April 13th files a $25-millon lawsuit against the ship’s owners. Hannah Daspit, spouse of Dylan Daspit, is suing for gross negligence. Her husband is one of seven crew members still unaccounted for. Six out of the 19 crew members were rescued alive the same day the boat capsized during hurricane-force winds.

The wife of one of the presumed dead crewmen of the commercial lift vessel that capsized during stormy weather in the Gulf fo Mexico has filed a 25-million dollar lawsuit against the boat’s owners Seacor Marine. Hannah Daspit alleges gross negligence and violations of federal maritime laws led to the Secor Power overturning.

The House Criminal Justice Committee approves legislation that would reduce the time a person can be held in jail before criminal charges can filed. Under current law, a person can be held in jail for up to 45 days for misdemeanors, 60 days for felonies. The proposed legislation would reduce that period to five days for most offenses and 30 days for a serious offense. But prosecutors say that’s not enough time, especially for complex cases. Hammond Representative Nicholas Muscarello likes the intent of the bill, but maybe there’s a happy medium…

State Health Officer Dr. Joe Kanter says if you have been vaccinated, reach out to those around you who are hesitant and encourage them to get the shot. He says this next phase of the campaign will require grassroots work.

A bill limiting the amount of time the state can keep someone behind bars before filing criminal charges narrowly escapes from House Criminal Justice. Bill sponsor, Representative Ted James says
holding a possibly innocent person in jail for an extended period can be costly, not only to the state but to that person who could lose their job, home, or even custody of their children.

House Health and Welfare advance legislation expanding the state medical marijuana program to include smoke-able “raw” marijuana.
Rep. Larry Bagley says a poll of his rural northwest Louisiana district showed 65 percent in favor of expanding the program. He says that’s because the benefits are becoming obvious.
