The 11th ranked LSU baseball team clobbered the Ragin Cajuns last night eleven to two as U-L Lafayette’s three-game winning streak came to an end. Cade Doughty and Gavin Dugas each had three hits and Brody Drost hit his first home run. The Cajuns committed four errors.

One day after learning he made the NBA All-Star team, Zion Williamson scored 32 points as the Pelicans defeated the Pistons 128 to 118 at the Smoothie King Center last night. Brandon Ingram had 27 points for New Orleans, which improved its record to 14 and 17. The Pels are at the Bucks tonight.

McNeese basketball kept its hopes alive to make the Southland Tournament as the Cowboys defeated Southeastern Louisiana 95-91. Keyshawn Feazell had 22 points. The Cowboys will host Houston Baptist on Saturday. They are battling with the Huskies for the final spot in the Southland Tourney. The Lions are at Northwestern State on Saturday.

Northwestern State committed 19 turnovers and lost to Stephen F Austin 83-57. The loss snapped the Demons six-game winning streak.

In basketball, ULM won its season opener as they downed Northwestern State five to two. Wiley Cleland had three hits and drove in three for the Warhawks.

LSU announces football spring practice will begin March 16th and the spring game will be April 17th.

According to New Orleans-based data analyst, Jeff Asher over half of Louisianans 70-years-old and older are estimated to have received at least one dose of a COVID vaccine so far.

Nearly 70 percent of all COVID-related deaths have come from that age group and Asher says due to this we could see a permanent, significant reduction in new COVID deaths.

12 percent of the total population in Louisiana has been vaccinated.

Asher says the new, faster pace of vaccinations may mean we won’t experience a fourth wave of the pandemic especially given the seemingly imminent approval of Johnson and Johnson’s vaccine.

New COVID cases and COVID-related hospitalizations have fallen by about seventy percent since the all-time peak in early January.

Authorities believe the pandemic will be under control once 70 to 80 percent of the population is vaccinated, but Asher says that’s still many months away…

Last week’s winter storm didn’t only impact the power grid and water systems in the state it also slowed down the crawfish industry. Wild Crawfish Fisherman Jody Meche says the cold temps reduced the number of crustaceans that could be harvested.

But Meche is hopeful that the freeze was too detrimental to the crawfish population that that warmer temps will enable them to bounce back.

A former well-known Monroe staple passed away Monday at the age of 72. Shirley was the sole elephant at the Louisiana Purchase Gardens and Zoo for 22 years after she arrived in 1977.  As requirements changed for keeping elephants in captivity, Zoo Director Tom Pearson says they opted to let Shirley retire in 1999.

Entergy CEO Phillip May says Tuesday the grid faced significantly more demand than it had supply and they were given 30 minutes by a regional regulator, MISO, to begin cutting back distribution due to the potentially catastrophic strain on the grid…

Monroe’s beloved 72-year-old elephant Shirley passed away Monday at the Louisiana Purchase Botanical Gardens.  Zoo Director Tom Pearson says after a hard life in the circus Shirley was able to roam the sanctuary with other elephants and had little human interaction. In 2018 one of her former caretakers in Monroe, Solomon James, was allowed to visit on her birthday.

The USA Today story says an internal investigation looked into whether Miles harassed a student and made sexist comments about others. The Advocate reports Miles offered a secret settlement to an LSU student. Miles attorney said that a description of a settlement is discernibly incomplete and inaccurate. And his attorneys also say if the results of the investigation are released, Miles would immediately suffer a serious injury to his reputation. LSU says it’s not in a position to comment on the allegations.
