Assistant Dean for Translational Research at LSU Health New Orleans School of Medicine, Dr. Lucio Miele, says 90-percent effectiveness is impressive

A bill to allow clergy members into healthcare facilities to visit patients during public health emergencies unanimously passed during the special session and was signed into law. Bill sponsor, freshman Minden Senator Robert Mills is hoping to meet with public health officials and have rules in place in the next several months, Mills says it’s important that the intent of the bill be known.

Three Baton Rouge Police officers have been placed on paid leave following a social media post from LSU freshman wide receiver Koy Moore that he was violated by officers numerous times Saturday evening. Moore, who is black, said officers tried to unzip his pants looking for a weapon and was let go when he told them he was an LSU football player. Mayor Sharon Broome issued a statement that an investigation is underway.

Governor Edwards is pushing to have the state carbon-neutral by 2050. The Climate Initiatives Task Force met today to discuss how to make that happen…

The Climate Initiatives Task Force met today to begin discussing how Louisiana could meet the Governor’s goals of reducing the state’s greenhouse gas emissions. Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority Chair Chip Kline says the task force will work to plot out a feasible path towards reducing emissions and provide education on how it can be done.

Kline admitted it will be a challenge to balance the state’s oil centric economy with the need for burning less oil. For example the Shell Convent refinery closure is set to kill 700 jobs in St. James Parish and upend the local government’s ability to pay the bills. LSU Economist Dr. Loren Scott though is optimistic that once the pandemic ends a buyer will be found for the state of the art facility…

ULM has suspended all football-related activities after a few Athletics Department administrative staff members tested positive for COVID-19. The university says a new round of COVID tests for football student-athletes coaching staff and some suppport personnel has been scheduled for this morning and the team hopes to resume football-related activities as early as tomorrow afternoon or tomorrow night. ULM is at Arkansas State this Saturday.

After beating Arkansas State, U-L Lafayette is back in the AP Top 25 poll at number 25. The Cajuns will host South Alabama this Saturday.

LSU and Baton Rouge police say they are investigating claims made by freshman LSU wide receiver Koy Moore, who says he was violated numerous times by police officers on Saturday night. Moore, who is black, says cops pulled guns on him claiming he had guns and drugs in his possession and unzipped his pants. Mayor Broome issued a statement this morning that the allegations are being taken seriously and the incident is under investigation.

The Shell Convent refinery is set to cease operation at the end of the month and 700 jobs and 24 million dollars of tax revenue is on the line if a new buyer can’t be found.

St. James Parish is still in shock after last week’s news that Shell would be shuttering their Convent oil refinery by the end of the month, a move impacting 700 jobs.

LSU Economist Dr. Loren Scott says Convent is a great site but all refineries are in a pickle right now, the primary reason being COVID.

A Shell statement says the closure was part of a companywide move towards more integrated sites and their lower-carbon future.

But Scott is optimistic that those the facility won’t be offline forever. He says it’s high tech, well maintained, and strategically located. He doesn’t expect Shell will have trouble finding a buyer.

Reports indicate Shell has been trying to sell the facility since July.

Scott says he is not concerned that the closure of the Convent site portends any greater trend towards future refinery closures and Louisiana is still positioned as one of the top refining states.
