The sales tax holiday in Louisiana is underway, today and tomorrow, the first 25-hundred on most purchases are exempted from the 4.45-percent state sales tax. NFIB State Director Dawn Starns says the legislature’s decision to bring the holiday back to assist residents and business owners recovering from hurricanes and the pandemic is vital.

Governor Edwards is urging residents not to plan a large holiday party. Edwards says gatherings for Thanksgiving should be small, with only members of your immediate household. The governor says an extended family dinner with nine people in the Shreveport-Bossier area led to tragedy as one of the attendees had COVID.

As COVID cases increase so are hospitalizations and Baton Rouge physician is urging the public to take the pandemic seriously. Brooke Thorington has more.

The Louisiana Department of Public Safety and Corrections has decided to not allow family visits during the week of Thanksgiving due to rising COVID-19 cases across the state and in its prison system.  Infection rates of COVID-19 have been lower across Louisiana’s prison system in recent weeks, but the DOC decided it was safer to not allow visitors at this time.

The exemption applies to in-store as well online and by phone purchases. Meals, rentals, and vehicles are excluded from the sales tax holiday.

Over the last three weeks, the parishes with the highest number of new cases over the last three weeks are Caddo, Ouachita, and East Baton Rouge.

Baton Rouge Physician Chris Thomas urges citizens to take COVID seriously and follow mitigation measures. Thomas, an ICU physician at Our Lady of the Lakes hospital has not only been treating patients he contracted the virus as well. Thomas calls on everyone to act as a healthcare provider, step up and do their part, which includes doing what’s in the best interest of others even when it’s most difficult.

The Tigers are set to play at Arkansas tomorrow, but there have been positive cases within the Razorback football program. Freshman quarterback TJ Finley is expected to get the start for LSU. His last start versus Auburn did not go so well. But Tigers receiver Terrace Marshall expects Finley will bounce back…

Here we go again with the possibility an LSU football game will not be played because of COVID-19. The Tigers are set to play at Arkansas tomorrow, but there are positive cases within the Razorback football program. With contact tracing Coach Sam Pittman’s team is running low on available players. He says they are waiting on Thursday’s tests to find out if they can play…

If they play, kick-off tomorrow in Fayetteville is at 11 AM.

The Pelicans have tendered a nine-point-four million dollar qualifying offer to All-Star Brandon Ingram, which makes him a restricted free agent. The free agency period begins tonight at 5 PM. It’s expected New Orleans will sign a center.

Saints running back Alvin Kamara did not practice for a second straight day yesterday because of a foot injury. But Kamara spoke with the media yesterday afternoon and said he’s good to go.

Veteran tight end Jared Cook also spoke to the media and said he’s diappointed in the season he’s having…

A terrible 30-24 loss for Tulane last night as they blew a 14-point second half lead to 25th ranked Tulsa as the Golden Hurricane tied the game on a Hail Mary as time expired and then won it in double O-T on a pick six. The Greenies fall to 5-5.

In high school football last night, it was Oak Grove over Cedark Creek 52-22, Carenco won over Westgate 31-23.

Starns says with the holidays approaching and a tough year for Louisiana businesses the sales tax holiday the weekend before traditional Black Friday, could not have come at a better time.

When you combine both state and local sales tax Louisiana ranks among some of the highest taxes in the country. Starns says the legislature acting to revive the sales tax holiday this year is a win-win for consumers and businesses.

Louisiana Department of Revenue spokesperson Byron Henderson says the legislation passed in the last special session exempts the first 25-hundred dollars of most purchases from Louisiana’s 4.45-percent state sales tax…

A family spokesperson for Edwin Edwards says the former four term-Governor appears to be improving but remains hospitalized with double pneumonia. Edwards’ biographer Leo Honeycutt says despite Edwards’ age of 93 and diagnosis he’s doing well.

Honeycutt says doctors told him if Edwards continues to improve he could be released as early as this weekend.

LSU interim president Thomas Galligan released a statement today saying its troubling to face the prospect LSU may have mishandled alleged cases of abuse and sexual assault. It’s in response to a USA Today article that provided several examples of LSU not following through on social misconduct allegations.

There’s a discussion among some Republican lawmakers about eliminating the state income tax as a way to attract more businesses and grow the state’s population. Jim Shannon has more…

There are reports that drugmaker Pfizer plans to file with the FDA as early as tomorrow for emergency use for their COVID vaccine. Some Republican state legislators are discussing whether the state should eliminate the state income tax. Shreveport Representative Thomas Pressly and Mandeville Representative Richard Nelson plan to propose legislation next year. Nelson says repealing personal and corporate income taxes would boost the state’s economy

Former Governor Edwin Edwards’ health appears to be improving according to family spokesperson Leo Honeycutt.  Last Friday Edwards was admitted to the hospital, tested for COVID and pneumonia, both negative then released Sunday. Honeycutt says on Tuesday night, Edwards was admitted again, and diagnosed with pneumonia in both lungs.

Honeycutt says the 93-year old former governor could be released as early as this weekend.

Saints Coach Sean Payton is not saying who will start at quarterback for the injured Drew Brees in Sunday’s home game against the Atlanta Falcons. It could be either Jameis Winston or Taysom Hill. Payton says they will play to the strengths of whoever is under center….

The injury report says Saints running back Alvin Kamara did not practice today, but when Kamara met with the media he said he’s good.

LSU Coach Ed Orgeron has also not named a starting QB for Saturday’s game at Arkansas. Orgeron says TJ Finley could get the nod because he practiced last week…

The Arkansas football program is dealing with a coronavirus cases and contact tracing and Coach Sam Pittman said today they need good results tomorrow to play Saturday.

There is a college football game tonight, Tulane is at 25th ranked Tulsa. Last week the Green Wave beat Army, who was ranked in the coaches poll. A win tonight would give Tulane it’s first season with wins against two ranked teams for the first time since 1979.

The Pelicans used their first pick in last night’s NBA draft to select speedy point guard Kira Lewis Junior, who averaged nearly 19 points, five rebounds and five assists as a sophomore last season at Alabama. The Pels had four other picks, but all of those selections are involved in trades that will be finalized soon.

Former LSU Tiger and Baton Rouge native Skylar Mays was selected in the second round by the Atlanta Hawks.

There’s growing concern that high school athletics could be shut down again as more schools move to virtual learning and coronavirus cases continue to spike. But LHSAA executive director Eddie Bonine (Bo-nine) says he didn’t like shutting down track, baseball and softball last spring and does not plan on doing it again…
