Today a Baton Rouge judge is slated to hear the case of Attorney General Jeff Landry on whether Governor John Bel Edwards’ executive order seeking to prevent LGBT discrimination should be blocked. Edwards says it’s important to send a message that the rights of the LGBT community are protected in Louisiana, but Landry asserts that the order is executive overreach that goes against the will of the people and legislature.

The severe storms that ripped through Louisiana Monday downed trees and power lines in some north Louisiana parishes, and claimed the life of an elderly man in south Louisiana. Straight line winds caused damage in Union Parish, and a 91-year-old man in Baton Rouge died after a tree that snapped due to the strong gusts fell on top of him. Forecasters say once again conditions are favorable for strong thunderstorms overnight into Wednesday.

Today Governor John Bel Edwards will announce flood recovery grant awards organized by the AARP Foundation to benefit 16 local non-profit organizations.

TigerRag.com reports that LSU Defensive Coordinator Dave Aranda has agreed to a new contract. The three year deal was expected to include a raise, an extension and a new title of associate head coach.

In college football honors this week… LSU running back Derrius Guice was named the Co-Offensive Player of the Week. He rushed for a school record 285 yards to go with four touchdowns in the Tigers’ 54-39 win at Texas A&M. He was also the Louisiana Sports Writers Association’s Offensive Player of the Week.

The LSWA has also named UL-Lafayette Linebacker Otha Peters the Defensive Player of the Week. He had nine tackles and one for loss in the Cajuns’ 24-19 upset of Arkansas State.

Grambling’s Martez Carter is the LSWA Special Teams Player of the Week. He had 279 all-purpose yards including an 88 yard kickoff return for a touchdown in the Tigers’ 52-30 win over Southern in the Bayou Classic.

Louisiana ranks number one in the nation for the best anti-trafficking laws, according to the nonprofit organization Shared Hope International. Franklinton Senator Beth Mizell, who serves on the state’s Human Trafficking Study Commission, says while this is a step in the right direction, more needs to be done to help the victims.

Mizell says there’s only one therapeutic home for sex trafficking victims in Louisiana, and it only holds up to ten girls. She says we need more safe places for these girls to go once they’re rescued, which takes a facility and a dedicated staff to care for them.

Mizell says the first thing we have to do is make sure these victims aren’t treated as delinquents and pushed into the criminal justice system.

Voter turnout was low on the first day of early voting for the runoff, and it doesn’t look like it will improve much by December 10. John Couvillon with JMC Analytics says 27-percent of blacks turned out on the first day of early voting for the presidential race, compared to 19-percent on Saturday.

Couvillon expects overall turnout will be between 17 and 35-percent.

New Orleans officials are exploring ways to make the streets safer following a fatal shooting on Bourbon Street last weekend. NOPD Chief Michael Harrison says metal detectors are used on Beale Street in Memphis, and that’s not being ruled out for the Big Easy.

This has been the 4th major shooting on Bourbon Street in four years.

Lightning, damaging winds and heavy rainfall are in the forecast. State climatologist Barry Keim says the severe weather threat will continue into tonight and tomorrow.

A Baton Rouge woman is behind bars after she hit her husband with a Thanksgiving turkey. Sgt. Don Coppola with Baton Rouge Police says 32-year-old Helen Jackson and her husband were arguing when she pulled a knife on him.

Based on the first day of early voting, turnout for the December 10th runoff election does not look good. John Couvillion with JMC Analytics says the number of voters on Saturday, the start of the early voting period, was way down compared to the first day of early voting for the Presidential election. Tiger Rag Magazine is reporting Aranda has agreed to a new three-year deal with the Tigers and he’ll keep the title of associate head coach. LSU finished seventh nationally in scoring defense and allowed three touchdowns in the team’s four losses.

Bradley Dale Peveto is no longer a member of the staff. The special teams coach has been let go by Orgeron. Peveto was on LSU’s staff for the last three seasons.

The Saints had 555 yards of total offense in yesterday’s 49-21 win over the Rams. But the defense also had a good showing. After giving up two long scoring drives in the first half, they did not allow any points in the 2nd half and held Los Angeles to 60 yards in the final 30 minutes. Coach Sean Payton credits the team’s health for the improved play on defense…

He blames the latest incident on an argument between two men and both remain at large.

Two people are dead and several injured following a shootout in Baton Rouge. State Police Col. Mike Edmonson says last night police responded to a shooting on Essen Lane. He says 48-year-old Terrell Walker allegedly shot his girlfriend, 30-year-old April Peck, multiple times while sitting in a car and then pushed her out of the vehicle.

Edmsonson says Walker was eventually killed during a shootout with East Baton Rouge Sheriff deputies.

Only 22,200 people cast a ballot on the first day of early voting in the December 10th runoff elections. Michelle Southern reports.
