Police have identified the New Orleans Westin hotel shooter who allegedly shot his 24-year-old friend before turning the gun himself Sunday morning. They say 20-year-old Bajkanwar Aulakh is the one they believe pointed the gun at officers before a three hour long standoff ended with the man fatally killing himself. Aulakh reportedly was set to appear in a Lafayette courtroom the next day on charges of felony cyberstalking.

The dispute over Common Core heads to court today. This is the lawsuit filed by parents who think Governor Jindal didn’t have the authority to block the test associated with the education standards. As a result there is currently no test in place. Council for A better Louisiana President Barry Erwin says they hope Judge Todd Hernandez provides some clarity with an initial ruling..:

Another Common Core hearing is scheduled for Friday in Tim Kelley’s courtroom.

The Houma man who is accused of driving drunk into a house in a crash that claimed the life of a 2-year-old baby pleaded not guilty to multiple felonies in court Monday. 22-year-old Tony Milligan faces charges of vehicular homicide, first degree vehicular negligent injury, two counts of careless operation, hit and run and no seat belt. He remains in the Terrebonne Parish Jail on a $300,000 bond.

A hearing is set to be heard by a judge today over a lawsuit filed by parents and educators who accuse Governor Jindal of overstepping his authority when he blocked tests associated with Common Core. Louisiana State Police say they busted a man driving through Louisiana on I-12 during a traffic stop with about 300 lbs of suspected marijuana. They say it happened around 9am Sunday morning following a traffic stop close to the I-12, I-55 junction. Troopers arrested the driver 26-year-old Carlos Davis of Greenwood, Mississippi after making the discovery when a positive alert was made by the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s office K-9. The drugs they say are worth about $250,000.

A new state law banning drivers from using their cell phone in a school zone was supposed to go into effect on August 1st, but the bill in its final form from this last legislation session requires signs be posted warning people of the ban. So far various cities and parishes are working to get those signs out and once that happens it will be illegal to use your hand held cell phone while driving through a posted school zone.

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries will hold a series of public meetings across the state to provide an update on black bear research. Large Carnivore Program Manager, Maria Davidson, says the project pulls together population estimates of three different sub-populations of black bears…:

The suspect is 30 year-old Jeroswaskie Collette. Fortunately, the other driver was not hurt.

An elderly driver from Grayson is dead following a crash with a charter bus on U.S. Highway 165 just south of Columbia. Eighty-six year-old Ted Coleman was attempting to enter the road from his driveway when he was struck by the bus. Coleman died later at a local hospital. His two passengers suffered moderate injuries. None of them were wearing seatbelts.

That’s when they retreated, called for back-up, and negotiated their way inside. The investigation continues.

Almost a quarter of a million dollars worth of marijuana has been seized after a traffic stop on I-12 near I-55 in Hammond yesterday morning. Twenty-six year-old Carlos Davis of Greenwood, Mississippi was charged with possession of marijuana with intent to distribute. Authorities say there could be other arrests connected to this one in Mississippi.

Two home invasions in Terrebonne Parish over the weekend has the sheriff’s office on the hunt for two masked men for forced entry of an apartment early Sunday morning, and another one in a trailer Sunday night. In both cases, residents held the victims at gun point, while they stole items from the homes. The search continues.

A Baton Rouge star on the Discovery Channel’s “Sons of Guns” reality show has been arrested on child molestation charges. Forty-nine year-old William Hayden was released on a $150 thousand dollar bond Saturday after his arrest on Friday. Sheriff Sid Gautreau had no comment n the case, while Hayden reportely told TMZ the report was a retailiation for a break up with a girlfriend.

The room was occupied by four men reportedly from the Lafayette area. Apparently the 20-year-old deceased individual shot his 24-year-old friend in the chest before turning the gun on himself.

The Terrebonne Parish Sheriff’s Office is currently investigating two home invasions that occurred over the weekend in Houma. The first happened early Sunday morning at an apartment complex on Monarch Drive. The second occurred Sunday evening on Star Court. Both incidents involved two masked men forcing entry into the homes, holding the victims at gunpoint, and stealing items from the homes. It is unknown if the incidents are related.

A crop duster crash in Iberia Parish has claimed the life 60-year-old Kenneth Squires of Jeanerette. Lieutenant Jeremy Kelly, with the Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office, says a Bell 47 helicopter crashed near a cane field north of US 90 Sunday morning. Kelly says Squires was an experienced pilot…
