The National Federation of Independent Business is encouraging people to shop local as the annual state sales tax holiday is expected to give small businesses a much needed shot in the arm. State director Dawn Starns says this is great timing, because in the last few months a lot of small businesses have been suffering.

The man accused of killing a Shreveport Police Officer this week is set to appear before a Caddo Parish grand jury on October 13th. 27-year-old Grover Cannon is the suspect in the shooting death of Officer Thomas LaValley who succumbed to his injuries while in the line of duty. Cannon is being held without bond for the first degree murder charge.

The first GOP presidential debates are in the books. So how did Governor Bobby Jindal do? Political analyst Bernie Pinsonat gives Jindal a B+ saying the Louisiana governor showed a lot of poise on stage, slowing down his normally rapid fire speech and giving good answers to the questions. He says there was a definite high point in Jindal’s performance…:

An arrest has been made in connection to a double homicide which happened in January near Donaldsonville in Ascension Parish. Deputies have charged 26-year-old Quinton Jackson of New Orleans with two counts of first degree murder. 37-year-old Chad Nichols and 29-year-old Benny Booker were found fatally shot at a home in what officials believe was a drug-related crime with the possible motive of robbery. Jackson was arrested with the help of New Orleans cops. Ascension Sheriff Wiley emphasized that this investigation is far from over.

The Governor’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness is urging citizens to use caution during the next several days because of dangerous heat levels. The National Weather Service indicates record high temperatures are possible in some regions and much of Louisiana will be above 100 degrees. Heat Indicies could exceed 110 degrees. A heat advisory is currently in effect for the upper half of the state until 7pm on Sunday.

The Shreveport Community is mourning the loss of slain Officer Thomas LaValley who was shot to death in the line of duty Wednesday night. A memorial service honoring the life and service of LaValley takes place at 4pm at the Summer Grove Baptist Church in Shreveport. The suspected gunman, 27-year-old Grover Cannon, was taken into custody Thursday afternoon after being the target of a multi-state, multi-agency manhunt and an FBI reward of $25,000 for information leading to his capture.

The West Feliciana Parish Sheriff’s Office has arrested a Zachary man for allegedly shooting a woman in St. Francisville. They believe 22-year-old Lionel Haile was in an argument with a group of people before he left and returned with a gun and opened fire. One woman was shot in the leg. She was transported to a local hospital. Haile is charged with four counts of attempted second degree murder.

Federal prosecutors say a Mississippi man is sentenced to a year in federal prison for a beating at Fort Polk. They say 23-year-old Justin Corey Thurston of McLain, Mississippi pleaded guilty to assaulting his ex-wife and striking a man in the head with a baseball bat last September. Thurston’s sentence also includes three years of supervised release.

In response to Louisiana Radio Network’s latest question, the four candidates for governor say they want to take steps to reduce the number of people in Louisiana who live below the federal poverty line. Republican Scott Angelle says we need to ramp up our technical and community college programs, strengthen the Louisiana family, and increase job creation…
