Congress approves legislation that contains 500 million dollars in federal disaster assistance. About 400 million dollars will go to Louisiana for flood relief. Republican Senator David Vitter says this is just a start, more federal aid is expected in December. He says this is great news for thousands of Louisianans struggling to recover from the historic flooding event….

FBI data finds Louisiana once again leads the nation with a murder rate of 10.3 homicides per 100-thousand people. Criminologist, Doctor Peter Scharf, with the LSU School of Public Health says a murder costs the state between one to six million dollars. He says preventive measures are more affordable than the costs of violent crimes…

Hazmat crews are on the scene after an explosion at around 5 AM rocked Camp Minden in Webster Parish. Those in the area, who were up at the time, report seeing a giant light in the sky. No injuries were reported. There is ongoing work at Camp Minden to destroy millions of pounds of improperly stored M-6 propellant.
