The state Department of Transportation says says work has begun on the last phases of the I-49 North project. DOTD spokesman Dustin Annison says “Segment K”, which is a one mile stretch between I-220 in Shreveport and Martin Luther King Blvd, is going to be built in two phases…:

Annison says phase one is a $31.5 million dollar project was awarded to Best Yet Builders. It includes clearing land, utility relocation, and roadway improvements. He says the second phase will begin this fall…:

State Police say a woman and her three year old child are dead after a single vehicle accident in which ended with a vehicle submerged into a canal in Terrebonne Parish. Trooper Evan Harrell says 31-year-old Ashley Worrell of Theriot was driving a Nissan Titan on La 315 in Dularge when she ran off the road and lost control of the vehicle…:

Harrell says the vehicle overturned into the Dularge canal and was upside down in the water…:

Harrell says this crash claimed the life of Worrell and her young daughter, 3-year-old Delaney Lirette. He says the crash is under investigation and it is currently unknown factors.

Ku Klux Klan recruitment flyers are popping up in south Lake Charles. The flyers are contained in Ziploc bags and residents have found them in their driveway. The flyers say “Save our Land, Join our Klan and Our Race is Our Nation.” There’s also telephone number to call, which leads you to this recorded message

The hotline number on the flyer has an area code out of North Carolina. When you call it, there’s about one-minute recorded message expressing frustration with the number of Mexicans illegally entering our country

Lake Charles Police say they are investigating, but at this time the K-K-K or any group is entitled to freedom of speech. The flyers are shocking to residents who received them and the recorded message tied to the
hotline number starts with “Be a Man, join the Klan” and it ends this way…

The State Police Retirement System board is looking into how State Police Colonel Mike Edmonson and another trooper received a large increase in retirement benefits as a result of a bill that passed in the final hours of the legislative session. State Treasurer John Kennedy sits on that board and he wants answers

Fiscal analysis of the law that passed shows it will cost the state an extra 300-thousand dollars. Edmonson has told reporters that if an investigation shows the retirement increase is not legal, he won’t take the added benefits. Kennedy is not sure if there was malicious intent behind this law that increases Edmonson’s retirement benefits

The Senate bill that gave Edmonson a retirement boost was changed during a conference committee, which took place behind closed doors, in the waning hours of the session. Kennedy says if the proper procedures were not followed, he’ll vote to undo the retirement increase for Edmonson and the other trooper
