Jeff Duncan of NOLA-dot-com reports Payton will have a second interview with Denver later this week as it appears he’s become the front-runner to get the Broncos job. Payton has already spoken with the Carolina Panthers and Houston Texans.

A special legislative session will begin Monday to address insurance issues in Louisiana. Lauren Hadden with the Louisiana Association of Business and Industry  says during the regular session last year lawmakers created an incentive program to attract more property insurers, but it wasn’t funded.

Hadden says they support Insurance Commissioner Jim Donelon’s goal to reduce the number of Citizens Insurance policies, which is the state insurer of last resort and more expensive than the private market.

2022 has been called the deadliest year for the city of Bogalusa and the new mayor, 23-year-old Tyrin Truong, has written a letter to Governor Edwards asking for him to send State Troopers or the National Guard to help curb the violence in Bogalusa. Truong says they need the public’s help too…

How bad is violence & crime in the small Washington Parish town of Bogalusa? Bad enough that new Mayor Tyrin Truong (TIE-rin TRUNG) has asked Governor Edwards to send in State Police or the National Guard. On WWL radio in New Orleans, Truong says gun violence in his city has reached a fever pitch…:

Bogalusa has had numerous violent crimes and nag-related shooting incidents in recent months. One happened right outside a high school football game; causing panic and making some schools refuse to play a visiting game there. Truong says the problem is disproportionately large for a town of just over 12-thousand, so he’s asked for help…:

Truong says too many are scared to name the guilty parties engaging in gun violence in Bogalusa. He says there needs to be a concerted effort to tackle the problem, for everyone affected..:

A special legislative session has been called to address insurance coverage issues in Louisiana. Lauren Hadden with the Louisiana Association of Business and Industry (L-A-B-I) says during the regular session last year lawmakers approved creating an incentive program for property insurers, but it wasn’t funded.

Hadden says they support Insurance Commissioner Jim Donelon’s goal to divert adding more policies to Citizens, the state-run insurer of last resort, which is forced to price their coverage higher than the private market.

The program would essentially provide public grants to insurers who are willing to write policies in higher-risk areas to help cover those costs. Hadden says while there might be alternatives to improving the insurance market in Louisiana…

Hadden says Donelon has told them that incentives would only be available for existing carriers and potential carriers that have the means to come and stay in Louisiana.

The special session is slated to begin on January 30th and wrap on February 5th.

The Southeast corner of Louisiana is expected to see some severe weather today that will have an enhanced risk of damaging winds, tornadoes, large hail, and flooding rain. Louisiana Radio Network Meteorologist John Wetherbee says certain areas will get the most impact.

Wetherbee says this severe weather is a response to dry and cool air mixing.

Wetherbee is advising Southeast Louisiana residents to take the proper precautions needed to stay safe and alert.

The Bayou State is the 6th worst state for retirement, that’s according to WalletHub’s most recent report. WalletHub analyst Jill Gonzales says they look at affordability, healthcare, and overall quality of life, and where Louisiana falls short is the availability of home healthcare and geriatric hospitals.

The study also looks a violent and property crime rates. Gonzales says while violent crime is notably worse in metropolitan areas, property crime in Louisiana is considered the worst in the nation…

Gonzales says Louisiana needs to enact more laws to protect the elderly from crime and improve healthcare accessibility, like hospitals that specialize in geriatric care and more home health nurses. She says Louisiana is deemed affordable compared to other states.

Cincinnati dominated Buffalo yesterday, beating the Bills 27-10 as Burrow threw two touchdown passes. The Bengals now head to Kansas City to face the Chiefs, who they beat in last year’s AFC Title game. Burrow believes the Bengals are a better team this year…

Murrill says she has abundant experience and savvy for the job, and a high point in her career was arguing Louisiana cases before the U.S. Supreme Court…:

She says kids often feel they’re not missed when they don’t attend, so they quit going…and a shortage of teachers has made that worse. Boffy says school systems are hiring now, and they hope to outreach people who may want to become a teacher…:

Alford says there are a number of Democrats who do not want Bernhardt to run for office.

One of those running for governor is Attorney General Jeff Landry, meaning his current job will be open. Landry’s 2nd-in-Command, solicitor General Liz Murrill has announced she will run to be the attorney general. After 7 years in her current job, she says she’s ready to “level up”…:

Bernhardt who also holds and fires a rifle in the ad has reportedly conducted polling to run for governor. Alford says he’s spoken with Activist Gary Chambers, who most recently ran for US Senate against Senator John Kennedy, who says he and other party members are not pleased about the ad whatsoever.

Other names high-profile names considering a run for governor as a Democrat are Transportation Secretary Dr. Shawn Wilson. Alford says Wilson would most likely have the endorsement of his current boss, Governor John Bel Edwards, and another name in the mix is East Baton Rouge District Attorney Hillar Moore.

The state’s Board of Elementary & Secondary Education (BESE) has chosen Lafayette area educator Dr. Holly Boffy (pronounced BOE-fee) as its new president. Boffy is the principal at W.D. and Mary Baker Smith Career Center in Lafayette and has represented BESE District 7 since 2012. Boffy says she wants to lead BESE toward overhauling how the state evaluates school performance…

Another area Boffy wants to see improve is school attendance and truancy, which is among the highest in the country. She says a great many students drop out or fail to attend because they feel they won’t be missed, or they have no relationship with their teacher. She says the teacher shortage has just made that worse. Boffy says school systems are hiring, and they hope to outreach people who may want to become a teacher…

Dr. Boffy says her years of experience in the classroom make her very qualified to be BESE’s president. She says she’ll continue to work with the Board to get more teachers in classrooms and keep more students in school…
