A double homicide in Monroe on Halloween afternoon leads to the arrest of an Ouachita Parish Correctional officer. Brooke Thorington has more.

A correctional officer (Blake Bardwell) is now behind bars facing murder charges in the death of his wife and child. Ouachita Parish Sheriff’s Office Public Information Officer Glen Springfield says they were called to a Monroe residence just after 1:30 Sunday afternoon.

Upon arrival, Springfield says officers were told the residence in the 3900 block of Old Sterlington Road belonged to Bardwell.

Springfield says 26-year-old Bardwell was immediately fired from his job upon his arrest.

Due to his association with OCC Bardwell was taken to another facility.

Governor John Bel Edwards is in Scotland for the COP26 Climate Conference. He told those gathered today that Louisiana did not shift direction on addressing climate change when President Trump pulled out of the Parish Climate Accord.

Edwards says the state may for now remain a leading state for oil and natural gas production but that it is also ripe for investment in low or no carbon projects.

Edwards noted that the state, through its coastal restoration projects, is working to minimize the loss of coastal lands as the result of hurricanes and storms that decrease Louisiana’s coastline far too often.

Edwards outlined to those at the climate conference what his state is doing toward addressing the challenges of climate change.

The Saints beat the Super Bowl champion Buccaneers 36-27 yesterday but starting quarterback Jameis Winston suffered a season-ending knee injury. Trevor Siemian (SIM-ee-en) filled in for Winston, but NFL analyst Mike Detillier expects Taysom Hill will be the starting Q-B once he’s cleared to play after suffering a concussion on October 10th…

The Saints also have rookie Ian Book on the roster and could bring in another Q-B. Tomorrow is the NFL trade deadline, but Saints radio color analyst Deuce McAllister doesn’t expect New Orleans to make a big move…

Simiem made his first appearance in an NFL game yesterday since 2019. He started several games for the Broncos in 2016 and 2017. Saints offensive tackle Ryan Ramcyzk (Ram-check) says Simiem played well under tough circumstances…

State troopers are continuing to investigate ten fatal crashes that turned the roads scary across Louisiana over the Halloween weekend. Sergeant James Anderson.

The unusually high number of violent crashes left 12 people dead, including two children. A Grant Parish woman, 38-year-old Miranda Sue Derrick was charged with vehicular homicide in a two-vehicle accident Halloween evening on U.S. 165.

Sergeant Anderson says the 10 fatal crashes and 12 deaths were particularly tragic in a couple of instances where children lost their lives in separate accidents.

Sergeant Anderson says there were a number of reasons for the high number of deadly accidents over the weekend.

A Ouachita Parish correctional officer is accused of murdering his wife and child. Ouachita Sheriff’s Public Information Officer Glen Springfield says law officers were called to a Monroe home 1:30 Sunday afternoon…:

Bardwell has been charged with 2 counts of 2nd degree murder and terminated from his job with the Ouachita Parish jail. Springfield says the investigation is ongoing.

Governor Edwards is in Glasgow, Scotland for the big Climate Change summit. Speaking at the conference, the Governor says Louisiana is doing its part to address climate change…:

State Police are investigating 10 crashes that occurred over the weekend that left one or more people dead in each of them. A total of 12 people were killed in the accidents that happened in north, central and south Louisiana. At least two children lost their lives according to Sgt. James Anderson.

What a win for the Saints on Sunday, but it came at a cost as New Orleans knocked off the defending Super Bowl champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers 36-27. Saints played much of the game without starting quarterback Jameis Winston as he went down with a knee injury and Trevor Siemian came in and threw for 159 yards and one touchdown. Coach Sean Payton says Siemian was calm and handled the situation well…

A state appeals court in Shreveport has ruled Ochsner Health can’t fire or discipline employees at its facilities in Shreveport and Monroe who are not vaccinated. Attorney Jimmy Faircloth represents the employees in this legal battle…

But Ochsner Health CEO Warner Thomas says their employee vaccination requirement outside of north Louisiana will move forward.

November marks the last official month of the Atlantic hurricane season, but State Climatologist Barry Keim is cautious about writing off the possibility of more hurricanes occurring before the end of the month because a La Nina is rearing its ugly head as the season ends, the same as happened last year.

Governor John Bel Edwards is in Scotland this week. LSU climate change policy expert Edward Richards says the governor’s appearance at the United Nations Climate Change Conference shows Louisiana is beginning to take climate change seriously.

But Richards says that as long as Louisiana is primarily identified with the oil and gas industry, it’ll be hard to convince people that the state is serious about climate change.

A new study from the website “Jerry,” ranks Louisiana the worst state to own an electric car. Lakshmi Iyengar (LUCK-shmee EYE-en-gar) a data scientist for the auto insurance shopping help site says if electric cars don’t catch on faster in Louisiana, it’s likely a “chick-or-the-egg” type conundrum.

Even though there’s a lawsuit challenging the vaccine mandate Ochsner says they are going ahead with the mandate with the exception of their facilities in Shreveport in Monroe. Last week the 2nd Circuit Court of Appeal in Shreveport ruled unvaccinated employees can’t be fired while the mandate is being challenged in court.  Jimmy Faircloth, an attorney representing Ochsner employees, says it was a surprising move.

Ochsner issued a statement this morning.

But Ochsner Health CEO Warner Thomas calls the ruling from the 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals disappointing and they will appeal to the Louisiana Supreme Court. Thomas also says the vaccination policy mandate will continue as planned at Ochsner Health facilities outside of north Louisiana.

An Ouachita Parish Sheriff’s deputy has been charged with two counts of second-degree murder for allegedly killing both his wife and his child. The two victims were found dead inside a home in the 39-hundred block of Old Sterlington Road. The suspect, Blake Bardwell has been a deputy at the Ouachita Correctional Center since December 2019. He was arrested at the scene.

An LSU climate change expert says it’s a positive Governor Edwards is at the International Climate Change Conference in Scotland, but it remains to be seen how beneficial it will be…

The second circuit court of appeal in Shreveport has ruled that Ochsner can not fire any of its employees at their Shreveport and Monroe facilities because they have not been vaccinated against COVID. Attorney Jimmy Faircloth calls it a victory for employee rights…

But Ochsner CEO Warner Thomas says employees outside of north Louisiana could still face disciplinary action if they do not comply with the lawsuit and they plan to appeal the ruling out of Shreveport.
