News of Congressman-elect Luke Letlow’s passing has rocked the 5th District with residents in mourning.

ULM Political Science Professor Dr. Joshua Stockely says the 41-year-old Letlow leaves behind a young family: his wife Dr. Julia Letlow and their two children Jaqueline and Jeremiah.

Accolades and condolences have rolled in from across the political spectrum this morning including from Speaker Pelosi, Governor Edwards, House Minority Whip Steve Scalise, and more.

Letlow entered politics working for then-Congressman Jindal in 2005 before following him to the Governor’s mansion until 2010. After a stint in the private sector he returned to politics in 2014 to run Congressman Ralph Abraham’s election campaign, eventually becoming his Chief of Staff before winning the 5th District election in December after Abraham retired. Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi held a briefing this morning and opened with comments about Congressman-elect Luke Letlow’s passing. Pelosi said Letlow was scheduled to be sworn into office this Sunday but was much taken too soon.

41-year-old Congressman-elect for the northeast and central Louisiana based 5th district Luke Letlow died yesterday due to COVID-related complications after a lengthy stay in the hospital battling the disease.

Condolences have poured in from across the political spectrum for Letlow, who was set to be sworn in Sunday after winning the 5th district runoff earlier this month. House Minority Whip Steve Scalise of Jefferson Parish released a statement marking the tragedy, and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi says Letlow was taken too soon…

Letlow is survived by his wife Dr. Julia Letlow and their two children Jaqueline and Jeremiah. Medical officials at Ochsner LSU Health Shreveport say Letlow had no underlying medical conditions that would have indicated he would have a higher than usual chance of suffering a fatal outcome for the disease.

The New Orleans Saints will wrap up the regular season on Sunday as they travel to take on the Carolina Panthers.  Despite the team’s success this year, quarterback Drew Brees says, they need to fine-tune some things before the playoffs.

Alexandria will be looking to make history tonight when they take on Acadiana for the state championship.  A win would give the team their first state title in school history. Head Coach Thomas Bachmann credits his team’s success this season to the number of leaders he has on this year’s squad.

Carencro beat Edna Karr by a score of 35-19 to win the 4A championship.  This ended Karr’s run of four straight state titles.

The New Orleans Pelicans lost 111-86 to the Phoenix Suns last night.  The shots just weren’t falling for the Pels as the team was just 3-24 from three-point range and just 50 percent from the foul line.  Zion Williamson led the way offensively for New Orleans as he scored 20 points on 9-13 shooting.

The LSU men’s basketball team got a dominant win against the Texas A&M Aggies 77-54.  The Tigers were led in scoring by freshman Cam Thomas, who topped his career-high 29 points against Nicholls by pouring in 32 against the Aggies.  LSU shot 47 percent from the floor and outrebounded A&M 40-31.

Also, the Tulane men’s basketball team will be on the road to take on Central Florida tonight at 6 p.m.  The Green Wave currently sit at 5-2 on the season.
