Louisiana’s newly elected Congressman Luke Letlow has passed away at the age of 41 from COVID-19. He was set to be sworn in next week to replace Ralph Abraham. Letlow was the chief of staff for Abraham and also worked in state government for former Governor Bobby Jindal. Baton Rouge Congressman Garret Graves says he’s known Letlow for 20 years…

Baton Rouge radio personality Michelle Southern graduated from Ouachita Christian High in Monroe with Luke Letlow in 1998. Southern says Letlow’s passing shocked former classmates.

Southern says Letlow was an excellent debater and made quite an impression in high school on her and the other 51 people in their close-knit graduating class.

News of Congressman-elect Luke Letlow’s passing has rocked the 5th District with residents in mourning.

ULM Political Science Professor Dr. Joshua Stockely says the 41-year-old Letlow leaves behind a young family: his wife Dr. Julia Letlow and their two children Jaqueline and Jeremiah.

Accolades and condolences have rolled in from across the political spectrum this morning including from Speaker Pelosi, Governor Edwards, House Minority Whip Steve Scalise, and more.

Letlow entered politics working for then-Congressman Jindal in 2005 before following him to the Governor’s mansion until 2010. After a stint in the private sector he returned to politics in 2014 to run Congressman Ralph Abraham’s election campaign, eventually becoming his Chief of Staff before winning the 5th District election in December after Abraham retired. Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi held a briefing this morning and opened with comments about Congressman-elect Luke Letlow’s passing. Pelosi said Letlow was scheduled to be sworn into office this Sunday but was much taken too soon.
