LRN Sportscast January 28th

An up and down week for the Pelicans ended on a positive note as New Orleans defeated one of the best teams in the league last night. The Pels outscored the Spurs 34-19 in the 4th quarter to beat San Antonio 119-103. All-star Anthony Davis had 16 points, but Jrue (Drew) Holiday had 23 points and Terrence Jones had another big game as he scored 21 points off the bench. New Orleans completes a long homestand by hosting Washington on Sunday.

In college basketball today…LSU will look to snap a six-game losing streak at Texas Tech at 1 PM.

Louisiana Tech’s Jacobi Boykins is suspended for tonight’s game against Middle Tennessee. He was involved in a fight that occurred in the second half of Thursday night’s loss to UAB. The Bulldogs are in a three-way for second place, while the Blue Raiders are 8-0 in league play. Tip-off is at 5 PM.

At the LHSAA Convention, member principals decided not to combine Classes B and C with Class one-A. The proposal was an attempt to reduce the number of championship games in football, basketball, baseball and softball.

Today it’s the Senior Bowl, Former LSU Tiger Dewayne Thomas is a late addition. He replaces Tre’Davious White, who will not play because of a sprained ankle.

Spring practice is underway for college baseball teams, the LSU Tigers are expected to get to the College World Series as they return their two top starting pitchers and most of their position players. Tiger Rag Associate Editor James Moran says they can’t take a trip to Omaha for granted…

Governor John Bel Edwards says he will not ask legislators to raise taxes, but he will recommend using 119-million dollars in money from the state’s rainy day fund in an effort to soften the cuts…:

An Ascension Parish woman will spend five years in prison after pleading guility to driving while intoxicated with her 15-month old child on her lap. At the time of the arrest, deputies said Katherine Summerfield had a blood-alcohol level more than four times the legal limit to drive. Prosecutors say she was so drunk, authorities took her to the hospital.

The New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival announces the 2017 lineup and it includes Stevie Wonder, Tom Petty, Maroon 5, Snoop Dog, Dave Matthews and Harry Connick Jr. — just to name a few. Jazzfest producer Quint Davis says once again the event has something for everyone…:

Spring practice begins today for college baseball teams. Expectations are high as usual at LSU as the Tigers are ranked in the top five in preseason polls. Coach Paul Mainieri says he can understand why…

At the LHSAA convention, principals rejected a proposal that would combine Class B and C with Class 1A. It was an attempt to cut down on the number of playoff brackets in sports that have a split postseason. Principals also did not vote for the “elite team” proposal which would force dominating teams to play up in class.

Conference USA has suspended Louisiana Tech’s Jacobi Boykins and UAB’s Hakeem Baxter for one game for fighting. Those two exchanged punches that resulted in both benches emptying out onto the floor. If you leave the bench, it’s an automatic ejection, so Tech finished last night’s loss to the Blazers with just four players. Boykins will not be availble for tomorrow night’s game against Middle Tennessee.

LSU will try to snap a six-game losing streak on Saturday when they visit Texas Tech as part of the SEC-Big 12 Challenge. LSU is allowing 81 points a game and they are ranked 327 out of 351 Division one teams in that category.

The Webster Parish Convention and Visitor’s Bureau has a new social media policy in response to what happened last December when tourism director Lynn Dorsey accidentially video herself nude on Instagram. The stream was supposed to be private and intended for her husband. A Shreveport TV station reports Dorsey will appear at a special meeting on February 13th.

A one-month-old infant is in critical condition and an 18-year-old father under arrest amid allegations he shook the baby violently, according to the Mandeville Police Department. Chief Gerald Sticker says they got a call from the hospital reporting the baby’s condition – so deputies began asking questions…:

Sticker identifies the teenage father as Stephen Michael Dufresne of Mandeville and he’s been charged with 2nd degree cruelty to a juvenile. He says the baby was airlifted to Children’s Hospital in New Orleans and is in critical condition…:

Dufresne faces up to 40 years in jail if convicted. Sticker says the suspect and baby’s mother live together, but at the time mom was at work. He says the grandmother discovered the baby’s condition and rushed to the hospital…:

The Westwego cop that was shot dead in Jefferson Parish last week is being laid to rest at this hour. Many people are lined up for the visitation of Officer Michael Louviere who was killed while assisting a motorists a week ago. He is described by friends as a loving father and husband who dedicated his life to serving his country and his community.
