A grand opening ceremony takes place today for the brand new $1.1 billion dollar University Medical Center in New Orleans. The 446 patient facility was constructed to replace the old Charity Hospital which never reopened after Hurricane Katrina. UMC spokeswoman Siona LaFrance says the hospital is 2.3 million square feet and employs 2,000 people…

It looks like self-financing is becoming a trend for political candidates in Louisiana. LaPolitics-dot-com Publisher Jeremy Alford says seven statewide candidates reached into their own pockets and loaned money to their campaigns. Alford says it’s not unheard of to have a self-financed candidate in a major state election…

He says in the last fundraising quarter, statewide candidates collectively loaned themselves over $1.3 million. Gubernatorial candidate Scott Angelle loaned his campaign $122,000 as well as taking out a bank loan for an additional $253,000. Alford says fundraising is becoming more difficult because many candidates are kind of picking over the same pool of donors…

All three declared candidates for Attorney General, including incumbent Buddy Caldwell, have turned to self-financing. He says Super PACs are involved in the state election for the first time and that’s another reason campaigns are finding money hard to come by…

Anderson says Vincent’s funeral will take place Saturday at noon at Our Lady Queen of Heaven Catholic Church in Lake Charles. Governor Bobby Jindal has made plans to be there. He says Vincent’s family made the decision to donate his organs and seven organ transplant recipients have already been identified.

Planned Parenthood has filed a federal lawsuit to prevent Governor Bobby Jindal from halting Medicaid payments to the organization’s facilities in Baton Rouge and New Orleans. Jindal announced plans to defund Planned Parenthood after secretly taped vidoes accuse the organiziation of selling fetal body parts. The federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services warned Jindal that such an action violated federal law.

If you would like to work as a wildlife enforcement cadet for the state department of wildlife and fisheries, now is your chance. LDWF is taking applications until September ninth. Spokesperson Adam Einck says they are seeking to train up to 24 cadets on the state’s boating and fishing laws…

A lawsuit has been filed against Louisiana by Planned Parenthood over Governor Bobby Jindal’s plans to cut their Medicaid funding. They say the loss of those dollars would limit health services for the poor. Jindal announced his plans after hidden camera videos surfaced apparently showing Planned Parenthood workers discussing the sale of fetuses.

The LSU Tigers have three players that have been named to the first team preseason All-SEC coaches team….running back Leonard Fournette, offensive lineman Vadal Alexander and defensive back Jalen Mills, who will likely miss the first couple of games because of a lower leg injury. Linebacker Kendell Beckwith and cornerback Tre’Davious White are second-team selections, along with punter Jamie Keehn. Wide receiver Travin Dural is a third team selection and so is defensive tackle Davon Godchaux.

Louisiana Tech defensive end Vontarrius Dora has been added to the Rotary Lombardi Award watch list. Dora has 99 total career tackles, 14 tackles for a loss and seven and half sacks. Defensive tackle Vernon Butler is another Bulldog on the Lombardi Award watch list.

LSU tight end DeSean Smith says his father knew state trooper Steven Vincent, who was killed in the line of duty earlier this week. Smith says his dad, Gary Smith, were in the Police Academy together in 2003.

At Saints training camp today, cornerback Brandon Browner was spotted on the field for the first time since sustaining an injury in the preseason opener against Baltimtore. Browner was wearing a brace on his right knee and did some light work with the trainers. Running back Khiry Robinson did not practice for a second straight day.

The black college football preseason poll is out. Grambling is ranked third, Southern is ranked sixth and Alcorn State is the preseason number one team.

The LSU baseball team has released its 2016 schedule. The Fighting Tigers will open the year on February 19th against Cincinnati. A couple of other highlights, they’ll travel to Nicholls State on March 2nd, host Louisiana Tech March 8th, battle UL Lafayette in the Wally Pontiff Junior Classic at Zephyr Field on March 22nd, host Vanderbilt April 8th to the 10th and play two games at Notre Dame on May 10th and 11th.

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries is accepting applications for the “Wildlife Enforcement Cadet” position until September 9th. L-D-W-F Spokesperson Adam Einck says they want to bring in new recruits to bolster the ranks they have in the field and the plan to enroll around 24 cadets for training which will begin in December.

Einck says the cadets will train at the L-D-W-F’s training facility at the Waddill Outdoor Education Center in Baton Rouge. He says they’ll be taught boating laws, state and federal wildlife and fisheries laws and other law enforcement training.

A vigil for State Trooper Steven Vincent is being held thi evning at the Iowa High School football stadium at 7pm. Members of law enforcement agencies and other first responders are asked to wear their uniforms. All will be asked to sit in a place of honor on the football field. A number of speakers are scheduled, including Calcasieu Parish Sheriff Tony Mancuso and several clergy members.
