Officials in 5 Gulf States, including Louisiana, announce they have reached a settlement with BP for $18.7 billion dollars which resolves litigation over the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill. Attorney General Buddy Caldwell says this is the largest environmental settlement in history…:

Caldwell says this $6.8 billion dollars  is the beginning of real restoration for Louisiana. He says $5 billion would be for natural resource damage, $1 billion for economic losses and $787 million would be paid in Clean Water penalties via the Restore Act…:

Caldwell says this finally and fairly resolves all issues associated
with the disaster. He says this settlement creates immediate action in what would have otherwise likely taken years of litigation in the courts to provide needed restoration to the Gulf…:(Caldwell says the exact details of the agreement will be released in the coming weeks in the form of a consent decree.)

The Louisiana Highway Safety Commission announces their Independence Day “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign begins today. Deputy Director Ken Trull says their goal is to remove impaired drivers from the roadway and save lives. He says during last year’s 4th of July holiday period, there were 374 fatal and injury crashes in Louisiana…

Trull says that of the 10 fatal crashes during last year’s 4th of July holiday, seven of them were alcohol related. He says they have given overtime grants to law enforcement agencies across the state in order for them to increase patrols statewide…

He says if you are going to drink, you should always pick a designated driver. Trull says traffic safety is every motorist’s responsibility and following a few rules can help you have a safe holiday weekend…

Fishing begins today for the 67th Annual Tarpon Rodeo at Moran’s Marina in Fourchon. The rodeo starts today and ends on the 4th.  Rodeo Admiral Eddie Callais says this year there will be more that 15-thousand dollars worth of prizes.

Callais says the different categories of fish are inshore, offshore, blue water fish, ,spearfish, a kayak division, and a children’s category . He says every child, ages 4 to 12, to purchase a ticket to the rodeo will receive a free fishing rod and reel.

Lockport Police say a man is under arrest after stabbing a dog and setting a house on fire in Lafourche Parish. Chief Warren Vedros says the incident started with a verbal altercation between 24-year-old Duane Ryan, Jr. and some friends. He says Ryan became irritated and grabbed a couple of knives from the kitchen to confront the men who fled…

He says, at some point, Ryan allegedly stabbed the pet dog near the eye and poured gasoline inside the house. Vedros says Ryan’s girlfriend then left the house with the pet and her children…

He says after Ryan threatened to set the house ablaze, the woman later learned there was smoke coming from her residence. Vedros says when officers learned what had transpired, they took Ryan into custody… (Ryan is charged with simple arson and cruelty to animals.)

The big story making national news today is the announcement by officials in 5 Gulf States that they have reached a settlement with BP for $18.7 billion dollars which resolves litigation over the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill. A federal district judge says Louisiana must let gay couples get married, file joint income tax returns and put both parents’ names on their children’s birth certificates. A Baton Rouge newspaper is reporting that every parish in Louisiana is now issuing same-sex marrige licenses. State Police also says any newly married gay couples can have their name changes on their driver’s licenses starting Monday.

State officials announce Louisiana is getting $6.8 billion dollars of a combined $18.7 billion dollar settlement with BP over the 2010 Gulf Oil spill. The Beauregard Parish Sheriff’s office says a man from DeRidder was fatally shot by his 85-year-old father during an altercation. They say no criminal charges have been filed.

After locking up Anthony Davis with a monster deal that will pay him a reported $145 million over five years, the New Orleans Pelicans didn’t stop there. They reached an agreement with starting center Omer Asik. The new deal will pay Asik about $58 million for five years; however, only the four years of the deal are guaranteed.

The Pels have also agreed to a four-year, $20 million deal with unrestricted free agent center Alexis Ajinca. The 7-foot-2 backup center averaged a career-high 6.5 points in just 15 minutes per game last season. Ajinca took to Twitter to say, “I’m very excited to say that I will be a Pelican for 4 more years!”

The Pelicans are making a big push to re-sign most of their own free agents this offseason.

The Pelicans have released their 14-man summer league roster. The roster includes former Tulane guard Jay Hook, Larry Drew II, and Seth Curry, younger brother of NBA MVP Stephen Curry. The team will hold a four day mini-camp where players will have to earn a spot on the team. The team will then travel to Las Vegas for summer league play that begins July 10th.

Yahoo Sports reports that Harvey native Greg Monroe has signed a maximum contract with the Milwaukee Bucks. The big man averaged nearly 16 points a game last season for the Detroit Pistons. The deal will pay Monroe $50 million over the next three seasons, with the third season being a player option. Monroe played his high school ball at Helen Cox High School before playing two years at Georgetown.

Former Louisiana Tech standout Paul Millsap and the Atlanta Hawks have apparently agreed to a new contract that will double his annual pay. An anonymous source says this is a two-year deal, with a player option for a third year making the contract worth $58.9 million. Millsap was selected to the NBA All-Star team in each of his two seasons with the Hawks. The deal can’t be finalized until July 9th.

Tuerlings Catholic alum Taylor Dugas has been called up to join the 25-man roster of the New York Yankees. The former All-American at Alabama has spent four seasons in the minor leagues, most with Double-A affiliate Trenton Thunder, after being picked in the eighth round by the Bronx Bombers in 2012. Dugas replaces outfielder Carlos Beltran who left Tuesday’s game with a ribcage injury.

Shreveport Police say a 3-year-old is in critical condition after shooting himself in the head. They believe the boy was playing with the gun when it went off. Authorities say both parents were home at the time of the incident and rushed the child to a local hospital. Police think the toddler got the gun from a holster hanging on the parent’s bed. The investigation is ongoing.

NBC pulled the pageant from their schedule over objections to pageant co-owner Donald Trump’s controversial comments on Mexican immigrants. Reelz CEO Stan Hubbard says they acquired the rights because they believe the pageant is an integral part of American tradition.

And Petroleum Analyst Gregg Laskoski says prices will steadily fall for the rest of the summer. He says its unusual for prices to peak before Memorial Day and continue to decline, but this happened two out of the past three years…

The Louisiana Chemical Association filed a lawsuit challenging a measure passed in the legislative session that imposes a 1 percent sales tax on business utilities and natural gas. Michelle Southern reports…

Louisiana Attorney General Buddy Caldwell announces that US authorities have reached an $18.7 billion agreement with BP on the settlement of the 2010 Gulf oil spill. Caldwell says Louisiana will receive $6.8 billion for natural resource damages, Clean Water Act civil penalties, and state economic damages. Caldwell says this settlement avoids a trial and allows for more immediate reaction. He stated that the settlement will be paid over the next 16 years.

The four candidates for Governor were asked how they felt about the Supreme Court’s landmark ruling legalizing same sex marriage nationwide. Amite Representative John Bel Edwards says the Supreme Court is the body that determines the constitution that is the law of the land and this issue is resolved and it’s time to move on…

The Louisiana Federation for Children has found that 91 percent of parents are satisfied with their child’s scholarship school. Scott Carwile reports.

A recent survey by the Louisiana Federation for Children finds that 91 percent of those parents participating in the Louisiana Scholarship Program are satisfied with their child’s scholarship school. President Ann Duplessis says this means the program is working…

It’s being reported that Shreveport native Michael Qualls has signed an NBA free-agent deal with the Oklahoma City Thunder. The former Arkansas Razorback star was considered a prospect in the NBA draft, but suffered an ACL injury in the weeks leading up to the draft. It is not expected that Qualls will be healthy for the NBA’s summer league or training camp.

Newly hired LSU assistant basketball coach John Treloar will not be joining the program. Treloar, who was the director of player personnel for the Phoenix Suns when hired in April, stated Tuesday night that he has accepted a job with another NBA team. Treloar was an assistant at LSU from 2004-2008. LSU head coach Johnny Jones will reportedly reopen a search to replace Treloar.
