The state’s annual survey of seat-belt use found that Louisiana motorists are buckling up at record high rates in 2014. The Louisiana Secretary of State’s Office is seeing an increase in voter registration leading up to the November 4th election. They say about 90,000 people have filed voter registration paperwork since August 1st. Residents who wish to cast a ballot in the upcoming election need to be registered by October 6th. LAE successfully challenged the funding of voucher schools in 2010 and President Debbie Meaux is hopeful this lawsuit will produce similar results…

The Baton Rouge Police Department has arrested a daughter and granddaughter of an elderly woman found dead in her home for cruelty to the infirm. Authorities say they found the deceased, 82-year-old Bessie Looney, in horrible conditions with bed sores and signs of malnourishment. 53-year-old Joleslie Looney and 17-year-old Lauren Looney were booked into East Baton Rouge Parish Prison.

Forbes magazine 400 richest Americans list came out on Monday and not surprisingly Tom Benson is on it and he’s the only one from Louisiana in at number 386. The St. Martin Parish Sheriff’s office says a man is clinging for life at a local hospital after colliding with a train yesterday afternoon. They say the driver from New Iberia was traveling north-east on Parish Road 3-70 at Hwy 182 when he crashed into the path of an oncoming northbound train. 45-year-old Jack Derouen (Derwin) is listed in critical condition.

The Washington Parish Sheriff’s Office says a 17-year-old student from Mt. Hermon High is under arrest after a gun was found in his car. The student apparently told authorities he was using it for protection from another student. He was booked with possession of a firearm at school.

If a lane change is not possible, you should slow down before passing the stopped vehicle. Edmonson says if someone is broken down on the side of the road, that person is owed certain amount of consideration…
