House Criminal Justice has advanced a bill that would better define gun-free zone laws as they relate to parade routes. The legislation clarifies that guns are not permitted within 100 feed of the center line of a parsed route and doesn’t apply to law enforcement or those with a permit, President of the Louisiana Shooting Association Dan Zalenka is against the measure.

A Shreveport man found guilty of domestic violence crimes earlier this month has been ordered to serve almost 15 years in prison. 47 year old Darnell Caldwell was sentenced yesterday to 13 years for domestic abuse battery with a dangerous weapon and causing serious bodily injury. Ad hoc District Judge John Robinson also ordered Caldwell to serve 18 months on each of two instances of domestic abuse batter with child endangerment

The LSU Tigers had their hitting shoes on last night as they slugged five home runs on their way to a 26-2 victory over Grambling. The Tigers scored half of their runs in the fourth inning, when they scored 13. Tommy White homered and drove in five runs and Jake Brown also homered and drove in four runs. LSU will host top ranked Texas A-and-M this weekend.

Louisiana Tech scored the first eight runs of the game last night in Monroe and defeated the ULM Warhawks eight to four. Dalton Davis and Cole McConnell homered for the Bulldogs, who have won six in a row.

In other action, it was Nicholls over Southern 12 to four, Southern Miss edged UNO five to four and Tulane topped Southeastern Louisiana 13 to 6.

Tonight, McNeese is at Houston and ULM hosts Alcorn State.

Louisiana’s constitution was created in 1974 and over the last 50 years it’s been amended 216 times. Nelson says there are sections of the state constitution that should be moved into state law, so that’s the main emphasis of a proposed constitutional convention

There is opposition to holding a constitutional convention this year. Alfreda Tillman Bester, with the group ten-thousand women, says the public remains in the dark regarding exact proposed changes to the constitution…

The constitutional convention would begin May 20th and organizers believe it will take two weeks to complete. HB 800 will need 70 votes in the 105-member House to advance to the Senate.

The ruling was handed down after a federal lawsuit was filed on behalf of some Republicans on the grounds the January map was racial gerrymandering.

The Secretary of State’s Office has stated they needed a map in place by May 15th for the fall election. And with a constitutional convention possibly in the works to begin May 20th Pinsonat says there are several complications and multiple twists and turns in the map saga.

The Pelicans season ended last night with a 97 to 89 loss to Oklahoma City as the Thunder completed the four-game sweep. New Orleans won 49 games this season. It goes down as one of the most successful regular seasons in New Orleans Pelicans history, but the team failed to win a playoff game.

Opelousas High School has its football championship title back. Back in February, the LHSAA stripped Opelousas of the title because of an ineligible player, but an agreement has been reached with the LHSAA that returns the state title to the St. Landry Parish High School. Coach Jimmy Zachery will remain on probation for one year but will be allowed to coach the team. He says his main concern was making sure the team retained what they rightfully deserved,,,

The division two non-select state championship was the first in the school’s history.

LSU gymnastics just won its first national championship and it’s top gymnast Haleigh Bryant is returning for a fifth year. Bryant also won the NCAA all-around championship and she is the all-time perfect ten leader in LSU history with 18.

ON the baseball diamond tonight, LSU hosts Grambling, Louisiana Tech is at ULM, Southeastern Louisiana is at Tulane and Nicholls hosts Southern.

Slidell police arrested a Slidell High School teacher for sexual misconduct with a student. The investigation that led to the arrest of 35-year-old Alexa Wingerter began in March. Authorities say Wingerter had an inappropriate and sexual relationship with at least one 18-year-old male student and there is evidence she purchased alcohol for students at local bars. She faces charges of Prohibited Sexual Conduct Between Educator and Student and Unlawful Purchase of Alcoholic Beverages on Behalf of Persons under 21. The investigation is ongoing.

Natchitoches Police are investigating a Monday evening homicide that occurred off University Drive. Around 9:30 PM Police responded to reports of the gunshot victim and when they arrived found a fifteen-year-old suffering from a single gunshot wound. The young person was pronounced dead after being transported to Natchitoches Regional Medical Center. The investigation is ongoing.
