It’s not happy news for many Mardi Gras fans and krewe members in New Orleans: shortened parade routes will make a return for 2023. After a two year hiatus due to the pandemic, parades last year were abbreviated on pretty short notice. Mardi Gras historian Arthur Hardy says many businesses lost money, because they were no longer on or near the parade route…:

The City says the shortage of police is why the routes are shorter again next year. Hardy says he’s hopeful things will be back to tradition by 2024.

The chancellor of LSU-Shreveport says he is stepping down. Larry Clark made the announcement Friday morning. He’s been a staff and faculty member since the 1980’s and has served as chancellor since 2014. Clark’s last day will be June 30th of next year.

 

Two Baton Rouge teens accused of plotting the murder of one’s mother will be held without bond. The 16-year-old girls allegedly convinced a 16-year-old boy to pull the trigger. 33-year-old Markeshia Stone was shot to death Wednesday. A judge denied them bail Friday morning.

Animal shelters across Louisiana continue to be overwhelmed with abandoned and even owner-surrendered animals. Brooke Thorington has more…:

An officer involved shooting in Lake Charles has left one man dead, but also turned up two more victims. State Police Trooper Derek Senegal says Lake Charles PD reportedly fired shots at a naked man who fired on them, then retreated into the house. It was then a SWAT team robot was sent into the house…:

No names of any of the three persons have been released. The investigation is ongoing.

Animal shelters statewide are overcrowded and under-funded. Humane Society of Louisiana Director Jeff Dorson asks if you cannot adopt a pet, at least donate to a shelter to help them in their mission…:

The Richland Parish Sheriff’s Office makes an arrest for a threat of violence made against Mangham High School yesterday. A 15-year-old was taken into custody after making the post on social media and charged with Terrorizing. The boy says he was only joking. He’s likely not laughing now.

Louisiana State Police will conduct a new cadet training class in February, but if you want to become a trooper, the deadline to apply is Monday. Trooper Kate Stegall says for the right person, it’s a terrific job.

The class runs for 23 weeks full-time. Trooper Stegall says if you’re interested go to lsp.org and click on Become a Trooper. That’s also where you’ll find the list of requirements. You do not have to already be a law enforcement officer to take the training.

LSP’s website says the demanding training includes physical fitness training, instruction in defensive tactics, firearms, patrolling, and managing civil disturbances. Trooper Stegall says LSP is big enough to offer interesting careers to folks with a wide variety of skills and interests.

After three people were killed in Lake Charles and an officer-involved shooting State Police are also investigating the incident that happened Thursday afternoon at a 7th Street residence. Trooper Derek Senegal says Lake Charles PD reportedly fired shots at a naked man who then retreated into the house and then a SWAT team deployed a robot into the house.

Senegal says upon entry into the home, Lake Charles police discovered the naked man whom they initially fired shots at deceased in the home.

Senegal says the two other persons had apparently been dead for several days. The investigation is ongoing, and Senegal says it was good that they were able to use a robot in the incident to minimize additional risks.

Names of the victims have not been released.

Over the summer animal shelters in Louisiana and across the country were at max capacity and animal advocates say things have not improved whatsoever. Humane Society of Louisiana Director Jeff Dorson says in their 34-year history they’ve never experienced such an influx of owner-surrendered animals.

Dorson says about half of the parishes in the state actually have shelters and he implores individuals if they aren’t able to adopt to at least donate to a local shelter so they can assist as many animals as possible.

In addition to donations, Dorson suggests considering fostering a pet while it awaits a forever home. And if you’re a pet owner, he implores you to spay or neuter your pet. He says Louisiana has one of the lowest spay and neuter rates in the country and it’s only making the problem worse.

If you are considering having to give up your pet animal advocates, ask you to reconsider and to never abandon your pet. He says the abandoned pets are starving to death and even being hit by cars.

After the COVID pandemic cancelled Mardi Gras in 2020 and ’21, parade routes were shortened for 2022. However many complained there was too little notice of that change. Hardy says some businesses says they lost money, because they were no longer on or near the parade route…:

Mardi Gras 2023 is February 21st. Krewe parades will crank up about 4 weeks beforehand. Carnival Season officially begins January 6th, also called “Twelfth Night”, “the Feast of the Epiphany” and “King Day.”

After a Lake Charles man was shot by police and stumbled into a local home to die, a police robot went inside and discovered has body and two more persons, who’d apparently been dead for days. State Police are now investigating the case, as they do whenever an officer is involved in a shooting.

Inside they found the man they had shot lying dead and two other persons, who’d apparently been dead several days. The names have been released as yet.

Lake Charles Police and the Calcasieu Parish coroner confirm three people are dead in what appears to be an officer-involved shooting at a home there. At around 9 this morning, officers responded to a report of a naked man waving a gun around at a residence on 7th Street. Little else is known right now other than that three persons are dead. LCPD has asked State Police to take over the investigation; standard procedure for shootings involving LEOs.

Two Baton Rouge teens are under arrest in an alleged murder plot that left a woman dead Wednesday night. East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s spokesperson Casey Hicks says deputies found the suspected shooter – a 16-year-old boy - who told them he was asked to do the crime by a female friend…:

The victim is identified as 33-year-old Markeshia Stone, who died from multiple gunshots.

 

A photo of New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell traveling first class to Amsterdam last week has emerged, after she’s already been ordered to repay the city $30-thousand for upgrading her travel to France this past summer. She’s also accused of using a city-owned apartment in the French Quarter for personal uses. Metropolitan Crime Commission President Rafael Goyeneche says now the personal security of Councilperson Helena Moreno has been reassigned out of what he believes is retaliation for her being critical of Cantrell. He says the driver has been accused of taking photos of Cantrell using the apartment and sending them to the media…:

Social Security benefits are going up for seniors in January. The 8.7-percent Cost Of Living Allowance is the biggest in decades. Louisiana AARP Advocacy Director Andrew Muhl says the average retiree in our state gets about $1400 a month. The COLA is to help seniors stay abreast of inflation.

The victim is identified as 33-year-old Markeshia Stone. She was shot multiple times and died in a nearby hospital. The boy is charged with 2nd-degree murder and a weapons possession charge. The girl with principle to 2nd-degree murder.

Police in Springhill, in Webster Parish, say they have busted a marijuana grow house. Working with Webster Sheriff’s deputies, officers found over a hundred pot plants in various stages of growth, plus irrigation systems, guns, ammo and cash. No word as yet on who or how many were arrested.

A pair of Baton Rouge teens face serious charges in a murder plot that left a woman dead last night. EBR deputies say a 17-year-old girl convince a 16-year-old boy to kill 33-year-old Markeshia Stone who was a relative. She was shot multiple times and died in a local hospital. The boy is charges with murder; the girl with principal to 2nd degree murder.

 

ACT scores among Louisiana high school students fell for the fifth straight year for the Class of ’22. Education Superintendent Dr. Cade Brumley says it’s concerning, because this is one problem that cannot be put off on the effects of the pandemic…:

She was just ordered to repay the city for upgrades for travel to DC, Miami and France to the tune of $30-thousand. 3rd Judicial District D.A. John Belton says he’ll convene a grand jury next month to look at evidence against Louisiana State Troopers in the roadside death of Ronald Greene back in 2019. Greene – a black man – was beaten by officers after a three-parish car chase. He died while in custody. The grand jury will convene November 10th.

Starting this year, third and fourth graders who perform below grade level on an end of the year literacy assessment will be provided 30 additional hours of focused literacy instruction during the summer…:

Three boaters were rescued Monday after fending off sharks about 25 miles out in the Gulf, after their boat sank. Louisiana Oyster Task Force Chairman and professional angler Mitch Jurisich says the Coast Guard arrived just in time because one man was holding onto an ice chest, and he was smart enough to know to go for the shark’s eyes…:

He says sharks have grown extremely aggressive and are known to steal fishermen’s catch…often.

A Livingston Parish deputy, who was driving 85 miles an hour before a fatal rear-end crash in July will not face criminal charges. The crash killed 33-year-old Christine Estave. A grand jury declined indicting Cory Winburn with vehicular homicide. He’ll instead get a ticket for careless operation and faces possible fines and community service. Winburn was hired by LPSO in 2009, fired in 2018 and then rehired in 2020.
