State Police are investigating an officer-involved fatal shooting Sunday in Alexandria. LSP says a Rapides parish sheriff’s deputy shot a suspect and the person did not survive. The circumstances that led to the shooting have not been made public yet, as evidence is still being examined.

 

The Department of Children and Family Services is under fire again after news of another infant fentanyl overdose death.  Days before one-year-old J’ahrei Paul of Baton Rouge’s October 31st death, the agency received an anonymous report he was in possible danger. Reporters at a press conference this morning asked Secretary Marketa Garner Walters why they waited until Saturday to issue a press release…:

Baton Rouge Police are investigating the Monday night death of a 20-month-old boy from fentanyl in his system. Officials report little Jahrei Paul was rushed to a hospital, but didn’t survive. A blood test revealed fentanyl in his system. The circumstances under which the baby ingested the drug are under investigation.

The Powerball jackpot has grown to a record-high $1.6-billion for Saturday night’s drawing. A single winner selecting to take a lump-sum payment would collect about $782-million. Louisiana Lottery spokesman Dustin Annison says that kind of money is perhaps worth risking a few dollars on tickets. He says take comfort in knowing that money goes to worthy use…:

The Louisiana State Police has graduated its first accelerated cadet class, which includes only former law enforcement officers. Sgt. Monroe Dillon says it’s a big day for State Police…:

Dillon says this class of 23 will bring LSP up to approximately 950 troopers. Each regional troop will get 2 or 3 new troopers. Another 65-cadet academy will begin in early 2023.

He says straight-line winds of up to 80 miles per hour and hail as large as golf balls are possible. The bad weather should move on through the state by afternoon.

Rock and country legend Jerry Lee Lewis will be laid to rest tomorrow in his hometown of Ferriday, in Concordia Parish. He died last week at age 87. Memorial services are scheduled for 11 AM at Young’s Funeral Home, and will be streamed online at “MidSouth.tv”.

Heavy rains expected tomorrow across Louisiana should be clearing Baton Rouge in time for kickoff of the LSU – Alabama game. Kickoff is at 6 PM in Tiger Stadium.

The coroner in Baton Rouge says a 1 & 1/2-year-old boy died Monday night from fentanyl in his system. The baby boy was rushed to a hospital but did not survive. A blood test showed the drug. The coroner says the manner of the child’s death is still under investigation.

LSU Police in Baton Rouge arrest a man they say raped a female student at gunpoint last month. 26-year-old Coda Stovall reportedly met the victim on social media. They met up and once in her dorm room, he allegedly got forceful. His bond has been set at a quarter-million bucks. Stovall has an arrest record laden with drug and weapons charges.

The LSU AgCenter estimates the annual damage caused by feral hogs to Louisiana farming is 91-million dollars…:

Jeff Davis Parish deputies say the boy left a note saying he’d “shoot up the school.” Meanwhile, a middle schooler was arrested in Lafayette for threatening to bomb his school. A federal judge rules conditions at the David Wade Correctional Center in Claiborne Parish are so severe they violate the constitutional rights of inmates being held in solitary confinement. Melanie Bray brought suit against Wade Center on behalf of people held there. She says now that a judge has ruled on the evidence, the trial moves to the remedy phase in January, where both sides will present experts…:

47 Louisiana Methodist churches have elected to exit the United Methodist Church over the UMC’s advocating for gay ministers and same-sex marriages. The most recent is St. Timothy’s in Mandeville. 92-percent of its 6-thousand members voted to leave the UMC.

 

Governor John Bel Edwards calls for an investigation into the Ware Youth Center in Red River Parish after the New York Times reported rape allegations involving guards and dozens of suicide attempts by incarcerated youths. It’s one of a few NOT operated by the officer of Juvenile Justice. OJJ Assistant Secretary Nelson Gordon says he’s hopeful the Inspector General will conduct a thorough investigation that will provide the state with actions they should take…:

Two former candidates for Governor are endorsing Attorney General Jeff Landry for Governor in 2023. Eddie Rispone and former Congressman Ralph Abraham want republicans to get behind Landry to avoid a bitter in-party fight like the two of them had in 2019, and led to a second term for Democrat John Bel Edwards.

 

Officials have broken ground on a new Biomedical Research and Innovation Park at the University of Louisiana at Monroe. Once complete, the 60-thousand square foot facility will be an incubator for medical research and design. ULM President Ron Berry says it is expected to create 175 jobs, with a $30-million impact over five years…:
