The World Health Organization declares monkeypox a global health emergency, and state leaders are asking for more vaccine doses. So far 25 monkeypox cases have been reported and State Health Officer Dr. Joe Kanter says they need more than a thousand vaccine doses to curb a potential outbreak…:

A pair of teens in West Baton Rouge Parish used sex to lure a potential robbery victim, but it didn’t work out their way. Deputies say the 16-year-old girl got the man to the motel, where her 15-year-old boyfriend attempted to rob him. A struggle ensued and the girl accidentally shot her accomplice. He will survive. The teens face armed robbery charges. The man is charged with soliciting prostitution.

Deputies in St. James parish arrest three people for burgling and vandalizing Lutcher High School early Sunday morning. Sheriff Willy Martin says the suspects also set some small fires in the school. He says the three men – ages 19, 18 and 17 – are all former LHS students. He says posting security camera images of them on Facebook triggered the tips needed to arrest them…:

Dry weather has triggered open burn bans in the following parishes: Caldwell, Lincoln, Jackson, Union, Winn and West Carroll. The bans are in place until further notice. Failure to comply could mean a $500 fine and possible jail time.

State Wildlife & Fisheries agents charge a Folsum man with DWI and vehicular homicide for a weekend fatal boating accident. LDWF spokesman Adam Einck says it happened Saturday afternoon on Lake Ponchartrain, and the victim is identified as 21-year-old Hunter Prevost, of Loranger. Einck says agents soon determined the boat’s operator, 22-year-old Lane Keenan, was alcohol-impaired. He now faces stiff fines and possible jail time…:

Monkeypox has been declared a global health emergency by the World Health Organization; triggering Louisiana health officials to seek a big stock of smallpox vaccine, which is effective against the virus. In a written statement, Johnson says he is “grateful for the honor” of another term, and “humbled.” Johnson is the only member of Louisiana’s congressional delegation to be un-opposed, and the only Louisianan on the important House Armed Services Committee.

The Louisiana Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority has finished its largest barrier island restoration project, with the completion of the Terrebonne Basin Barrier Islands. The project restored one-thousand acres of barrier island habitat. Project manager April Newman says these islands will provide storm surge protection..:

The 166-million dollar project used funds from the Deepwater Horizon oil spill.

 

Congresswoman Julia Letlow qualified Friday to run for re-election. The first Republican woman to represent the state in Congress has strong feeling about parents’ right in their kids’ education and about Second Amendment rights…:

Governor John Bel Edwards’ plan to send the most violent inmates from the troubled Bridge City Center for Youth to Angola state prison is comes under fire. A group of angry folks held a protest outside the Jefferson Parish juvenile jail late last week, complaining the sending teens to Angola unfairly punishes people of color. Loyola University law professor Hector Linares says, even though the plan is to segregate the teens from the adults, federal law dictates under those circumstances juveniles and adults must not see or hear each other, and perhaps that hasn’t been considered…:

He suggest moving the LEAST violent Bridge City kids to another place. There have been four violent escaped from the facility this year.

District FOUR Congressman Mike Johnson finished qualifying with no challenger. That means he is automatically re-elected to a 4th term in office. Garret Graves has two challengers, Julia Letlow three, Clay Higgin SEVEN, Troy Carter one and Steve Scalise two. Most politicos predict easy re-election for all, except possibly congressman Higgins.

 

A huge project to rebuild some of Louisiana’s vanishing barrier islands is complete. April Newman, with the state’s Coastal Protection & Restoration Authority, is the Terrebonne Basin Barrier Islands project manager. She says the $166-million undertaking moved nearly nine million cubic yards of dredged sediment…:

The project was paid for with money from BP for the 20120 Gulf oil spill. The restored islands will help mitigate the effect of hurricanes as the come ashore.

Member of the sports media predict LSU will finish fifth in the SEC West this season. As expected Alabama is the preseason favorite. The projected order following the Crimson Tide is Texas A-and-M, Arkansas, Ole Miss and then LSU. Tiger Rag magazine editor Tim Buckley says LSU’s ranking is the result of not having an established starter at quarterback, an inexperienced offensive line, unproven running backs and only one established player at wide receiver. “Rebuilding season” indeed.

A Port Allen woman and her two teenage kids were killed Friday in a plane crash in Colorado. Sandra Kirby, son Ian and daughter Amanda were sightseeing near Boulder, when their small aircraft went down. The teens attended Port Allen High and Sandra was a long-time staff member at LSU Biology Sciences. The crash is under investigation.

The media picks LSU to finish 5th in the SEC West this season; likely due to a new coach and uncertainty at starting quarterback.

Our state tops another one of those “bad lists”; taking the top spot for highest sales taxes in the country. The current statewide sales tax is 9.55-percent. The Tax Foundation’s Janelle Fritts says when sales taxes get so high, they become burdensome…:

The actual state sales tax is actually among the lowest in the U.S., but when you add parish and local taxes, it gets to that highest spot.

Speaking of records, gasoline has retreated from the record-high $4.55 statewide; now at $4-a-gallon for regular. Louisiana AAA’s Don Redman says lowered demand is behind the price drop…:

U.S. Senator and fundraising juggernaut John Kennedy has raised over $29-million for his re-election bid, but says he wants to hit the $40-million mark before Election Day. His on-hand funds far outstrip any of his announced challengers, so why would he want to raise even more? U.L.-Monroe political science professor Pearson Cross says having abundant cash to fight off a well-funded Political Action Committee seeking to un-seat him is one answer and there’s no reason to slow down on fundraising. The excess can be used in a future Senate re-election, but NOT if he decides to run for Governor next year…:

Cross says that’s a good way to curry favor and support with Senate colleagues.

Governor Edwards will have to appoint an interim mayor for Minden, in Webster Parish, after the death of Mayor Terry Gardner last month. This after Minden council members failed to reach that decision this week. For the time being, the mayor pro tem is handling city business.

New Orleanian Ryan Thibodaux is, apparently, a man of iron. Thibodaux, a local dentist & musician, survived being gored by a bull during the annual Running of the Bulls in Pamplona, Spain recently. Before that, Thibodaux survived a rough bout of COVID-19 Alpha and beat back cancer. Thibodaux says he has no regrets.
