A former Iberville Parish teacher has been indicted on 37 criminal counts as a result of accusations he had sex with his former students. Keavin Keith, who recently was named teacher of the year at MSA-West Academy in Plaquemine, is free on bond. A teacher, who wishes to stay anonymous, that formerly worked with Keith commented to LRN on his indictment….

There’s a lot of attention on the fall statewide elections, but there’s also plenty of political activity involving legislative races. On the Senate side, nine seats open, seven because of term limits. And on the House side, there’s at least 19 open seats, 14 are the result of term limits. Political analyst and pollster John Courville says the jockeying for these open seats is well underway, even though qualifying for these races are two months away…:

Courville says many candidates use this time to speak one-on-one with residents and fundraise.

The University of Louisiana System has authorized area colleges to raise their tuition and fees by an average of 10 percent in the upcoming school year. The increases are permitted under the GRAD Act. All campuses will receive at least some increase according to ULS leaders.

He still faces up to 40-years, but legal analyst Tim Meche doesn’t think Fontenot will get the maximum…:

In the incident where Fontenot contends he was shooting at what he thought were people breaking into his truck, he also injured two other teenagers. The defense attorney said his client never denied shooting the teens, but claims he was aiming at the truck, not the people in the vehicle. Meche says the punishment is all up to Judge Edward Rubin..:

Rivault lived down the street from Fontenot and was a freshman at St. Thomas More Catholic School when he was killed. There was a pre-sentence investigation where lawyers give the judge letters and interviews from people those representing victims and also those who know the convicted individual…:

Louisiana hunters are now allowed to carry any firearm of their choice during bow hunting season. In the past, hunters were only allowed to carry a 22 caliber pistol loaded with rat shot that could only kill small pests. Port Allen Senator Rick Ward  says he believes this law will be beneficial to keeping hunters safe from more aggressive animals…

Some opponents of the law say this law gives hunters the freedom to use a gun to hunt game during bow hunting season. Ward says those who want to use their gun for hunting during bow season will do so regardless, but the Department of Wildlife and Fisheries can easily detect the illegal activity…

Senator Ward says although there were concerns initially about the bill, the responses have been positive now that it has been signed into law…

Harrison says then Johnson tried to cover it up. He’s charged with obstruction, malfeasance and theft. Harrison says they still have no idea how Boys ended up with guns in the cop car then escape.

The National Right to Life convention this week in New Orleans will also feature a Republican presidential candidate debate on Friday but Governor Bobby Jindal won’t be there. His office says there is a scheduling conflict but that the Governor would be there as keynote speaker Thursday night on opening day.

The Louisiana chapter for Americans for Prosperity, an anti-tax organization, is starting a radio campaign which calls out lawmakers who voted to increase taxes and fees in the last legislative session. New Orleans Police have made another arrest as part of the investigation into the murder of Officer Daryle Holloway and it’s another cop. Officer Wardell Johnson is booked with malfeasance and obstruction in the initial arrest of suspected cop-killer Travis Boys. Investigators say Johnson lied twice about bullets taken from Boys’ home. New Orleans police Superintendent Michael Harrison says he’s disgusted by Johnson’s sloppy police work including a pat down of Boys which was not thourough.

The Iberia Parish Sheriff’s office says they responded to a residence last night after a 911 call came in from a man saying he’d just shot his girlfriend and his girlfriend’s dad but it turned out to be a lie. Deputies got to the house and learned there was no shooting incident that had taken place. Detectives believe the caller misused 911 to purposely have cops go to that home. They do have a person of interest.

Public elementary students could be taught gun safety when school starts in fall under a bill passed in the last session and signed into law by Governor Bobby Jindal. Erath Representative Blake Miguez sponsored the measure and he says the purpose is to reduce accidental gun deaths in Louisiana…:

He says the material essentially gives children who might not have any firearm knowledge learn that they should never touch or play with weapons.

The National Journal reports that Republican US Representative Charles Boustany has told donors he will run for US Senate next year, if Senator David Vitter is elected governor this year. UL Lafayette Political Science Professor Pearson Cross says if that happens, Vitter will appoint a person to complete his term and have an advantage when the election takes place for a full six year term next year

Republican Congressman John Fleming of Minden and GOP state treasurer John Kennedy could also run for US Senate next year.

The Town Talk reports that Army cuts are expected to be coming Thursday and they could significantly affect Fort Polk and the surrounding communities. Army officials have to cut at least 40,000 troops and personnel and some of that could fall on Fort Polk.

New information is out on a man found dead in his trailer in the East Baton Rouge Parish town of Zachary over the weekend. 47-year-old Robert Noce was murdered just two weeks after he began serving probation for a sex crime involving a young child. Noche pleaded no contest to carnal knowledge of a juvenile on June 22nd. He was found strangled and stabbed to death on Saturday at his residence and there are no suspects at this time according to cops.
