We have a tragic story to report out of St. Martin Parish today. Two teenage girls who were walking to school this morning were struck and killed by a pick-up truck. A third girl was also hit and she’s in serious condition at a Baton Rouge hospital. Trooper Jared Sandifer says the investigation is ongoing and impairment is supected on the driver’s part….

The driver has been identified as 32-year-old Jeremy Abraham of Breaux Bridge and charges are pending against him. He’s in a Lafayette hospital in critical condition.

The Louisiana Attorney General’s office announces they’ve arrested a 29-year-old Slidell man on 25 counts of distributing child pornography. The A-G’s office says if Jeremy Petry is convicted as charged, he faces up to 20 years in prison on each count of child pornography.

Last night’s televised US Senate debate was the final one before Tuesday’s election. La-politics-dot-com’s Jeremy Alford says the most intense part of the debate occurred when the candidates discussed the minimum age a person should be allowed to collect full Social Security benefits….

A win for the Saints tonight against Carolina and they move into first place in the NFC South. The Panthers are winless in their last three games, but they should get a boost with the return of running back DeAngelo Williams, who has missed the last six games because of injuries. Saints defensive end Cam Jordan on the challenges Williams brings to their defense…

Three players have been ruled out for the Saints tonight. Running back Pierre Thomas, linebacker David Hawthorne and fullback Austin Johnson. This is the second straight game Thomas will miss because of a shoulder injury, while Hawthorne hurt his hand in the Green Bay win.

Former LSU Tiger Jarvis Landry has been named the A-F-C Special Teams Player of the Month. Landry leads the NFL with a 31-yard kickoff return average.

Tonight in the Sun Belt Conference, Georgia Southern hosts Troy. Georgia Southern and the Ragin Cajuns are both undefeated in league play and tied for first in the Sun Belt. U-L Lafayette hosts South Alabama this Saturday. The Jaguars are 4-and-1 in the Sun Belt this year and last season they beat the Cajuns 30 to 8.

Louisiana Tech will also look to stay undefeated in league action this Saturday as they host Western Kentucky. The Bulldogs are 4-and-0 in Conference USA, while the Hilltoppers are 1-and-3.

Over in the Southland Conference…Northwestern State hosts McNeese State. The Cowboys are 3-and-1 in league play and with a win they move into a first place tie with Southeastern Louisiana, who is off this weekend. Nicholls State will host Incarnate Word.

In the SWAC, after taking last weekend off, Grambling State will visit Texas Southern. Both teams are 5-and-3 on the season. Southern will host Alabama State. The Jaguars are 4-and-1 in the SWAC, a game behind Grambling in the west division standings.

A new study, by the advocacy group Oceana, shows a misrepresentation of shrimp across the United States. The report used DNA testing to examine 143 shrimp products and found that 30-percent were falsely labeled in 111 grocery stores and restaurants. Louisiana Shrimp Association President Clint Guidry says that 90% of the shrimp eaten in the US is imported…

The most common substitution in the study was farmed whiteleg shrimp being sold as “wild” and “Gulf” shrimp. Guidry says there are laws requiring “Country of Origin” labeling of seafood products for stores, but the laws do not extend down to the restaurant level. He says there are loopholes in the law…

The Panthers starting left tackle, Byron Bell, is out because of a knee injury. But running back DeAngelo Williams returns after missing the last six games because of injuries.

LSU and Alabama are both off this Saturday, which gives them extra time to get healthy for their match-up in Death Valley on November eighth. The Crimson Tide’s leading rusher TJ Yeldon has not practiced this week and has been seen wearing a walking boot. But Bama’s Nick Saban anticipates Yeldon will return to practice on Monday.

Jimmy Anderson of Lake Charles has been named the interim executive director of the Louisiana High School Athletic Association. Anderson will fill the role once served by Kenny Henderson, until a person can take over the position on a full-time basis. Anderson is a past president of the LHSAA and currently serves as a rules compliance officer in Lake Charles.

In high school football action today…John Curtis will face De La Salle. Both teams have six wins on the season. It will be the 600th game for legendary Patriots head coach J-T Curtis.

In college basketball…Stephen F Austin has been picked to win the Southland Conference based on a poll of the league’s coaches. Northwestern State received a first-place vote and is expected to finish second. McNeese State is projected to finish in fifth place. Tulane is expected to finish in last place in the American Athletic Conference.

In the NBA,,,the Pelicans are off today. They don’t play again until Saturday, when they host the Dallas Mavericks.

The Saints will face the Carolina Panthers tomorrow night. Last Sunday, New Orleans defense had to deal with Aaron Rogers, tomorrow night it’s Cam Newton. Saints defensive coordinator Rob Ryan says Newton is exciting to watch, but they need to get him on the ground…

LSU is the first school in the country to use a special mouthguard that monitors the impact of hits to a player’s head. Jesse Harper, president of I-One Biometrics says the mouthguard has tiny electronic pieces inside and it provides information to the trainers on the sidelines, so they can monitor for possible concussion activity….

ULM is at Texas A-and-M this Saturday. The Aggies have lost three in a row and they are considering a change at quarterback. But despite all of that, A-and-M leads the SEC in total offense and passing offense. Warhawks Head Coach Todd Berry says he’s impressed with the Aggies offensive line….

Great start of the NBA season for the Pelicans. They beat Orlando 101-84 last night. Big game for Anthony Davis, 26 points, 17 rebounds and nine blocks, which ties a team record that Davis set last season.

And according to a poll of the Southland coaches….the Northwestern State men’s basketball team has been picked to finish second behind preseason favorite Stephen F Austin. McNeese State has been picked to finish fifth, S-L-U seventh, Nicholls 8th and UNO ninth.

Statistics show Orleans led the way with over 23,000 early voters followed by East Baton Rouge Parish with over 22,000 participating. Schedler says this year’s totals are short of the 356,000 early voters that turned out for the 2012 election…

The 2012 Presidential election had a 68-percent voter turnout. Schedler had predicted a 45 to 50-percent voter turnout for Tuesday’s election, based on historical data. Republican Texas Senator Ted Cruz has endorsed Calhoun Republican Zach Dasher in Louisiana’s 5th District Congressional race. Cruz, who is considering a presidential run in 2016, is a favorite among the tea party movement. ULM Political Science Professor Joshua Stockley says this is a significant endorsement for Dasher…

LSU Atheltic Director Joe Alleva sent out a statement this afternoon encourgaing Tiger fans to remain in the seating areas the next time LSU has a big win in Death Valley. Alleva says LSU represents the achievement of victory with dignity and they do no want to sacrifice safety or sportsmanship. The school has been fined five-thousand dollars for violating the league’s policy against fans rushing onto the field or court.

Meanwhile, work to fix the turf at Tiger Stadium is ongoing. Assistant Sports Turf Manager Hunter Sexton says fans cut out sections of the field as a souvenir…

In other football news…Louisiana Tech will be without running back Hunter Lee for the next several weeks because of a broken collarbone.

The Saints have placed wide receiver Joe Morgan on the reserve-suspended list. Coach Sean Payton gave no explanation for the move. Morgan has appeared in one game season. He missed all of 2013 because of an A-C-L injury, but in 2012, he averaged 35 yards a catch. But today’s news could mean the end of Morgan’s career in a Saints uniform.

The Sun Belt Conference has suspended the officiating crew who worked last week’s U-L Lafayette-Arkansas State game for one week. The game was chippy in the second half and brief scuffle broke out after a dangerous play by an Arkansas State player.

The 2014-15 NBA season gets underway for the New Orleans Pelicans tonight as they host the Orlando Magic. Reaching the postseason for the first time since 2011 is the goal for the Pels. Tyreke Evans hopes they can put it all together…

Jindal says this investment will create 500 direct new jobs with an annual salary of $88,000. Louisiana Economic Develpoment estimates that the project will create an additional 5,000 construction jobs and nearly 2,400 indirect jobs. According to the American Automobile Association, the average price for a gallon of regular gas in Louisiana is the lowest it’s been in four years. The Bayou State’s average price has fallen to $2.88 per gallon. AAA fuel analyst Don Redman says this is a surprising turn of events considering the geopolitical tensions around the world…

Landrieu supported the Affordable Care Act when it passed and says she would vote for it again, because it’s provided thousands of low-income families in Louisiana a chance at purchasing health insurance

Tonight the NBA season tips off as the New Orleans Pelicans host the Orlando Magic. Many league analysts say Pels power forward Anthony Davis is ready to take another step towards becoming an MVP candidate. He averaged nearly 21 points and ten rebounds last season and was one of the top performers on the US Team that won the gold medal in the World Championships. Tonight’s game gets underway at 7:00 in the Smoothie King Center.

Today is the NFL trade deadline. And the Saints are practicing today, which is rare for a Tuesday, but New Orleans has to, because they are at the Carolina Panthers on Thursday.

In the latest high school football polls…Rummel is the unanimous number one team in Class Five-A. Followed by Destrehan, Ponchatoula, Byrd and Jesuit. In One-A, Mangham is the unanimous number one team, followed by Haynesville, Vermilion Catholic, Kentwood and West St John.

LSU’s Kendell Beckwith has been named the SEC Defensive Player of the Week. Beckwith had a career-high 11 tackles in the Tigers 10-7 win over the Rebels. Running back Leonard Fournette was named the league’s Freshman of the Week. Forunette had 113 yards rushing and 41 yards receiving.

Louisiana Tech will look to stay undefeated in Conference USA play this Saturday when they host Western Kentucky. The Sun Belt Conference has reprimanded Ragin Cajuns cornerback Corey Trim, along with offensive line coach Mitch Rodrigue and UL strength coach Rusty Whitt for their roles in a brief scuffle that occurred in their game against Arkansas State. Four players were also reprimanded from Arkansas State.
