Louisiana Tech has plenty to celebrate today as US News and World Report has ranked the school number one among public universities in the nation for lowest average student debt. Tech spokesperson Dave Guerin says they’ve also been recognized for highest return on investment and highest mid-career salaries for graduates:

Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton spoke to a crowd of supporters in Baton Rouge today. The former Secretary of State is in town recruiting local volunteers to help her campaign’s efforts ahead of the state’s primary election on March 5th. Clinton says she’s always been a fan of Louisiana and she and her husband visited often:

Clinton will attend a fundraiser in Baton Rouge this evening.

It was a record hot weekend in Louisiana but a cold front is coming. State Climatologist Barry Keim says most of Louisiana can expect lows in the upper 60′s and highs in the upper 80′s to near 90 degrees for the next couple of days. But he says warmer temperatures will return:

He says this front will bring significantly dryer air into the state for at least the next couple of days.

Saints fans are getting some more rough news today as the NFL Network is reporting Quarterback Drew Brees has a shoulder injury that will likely cause him to miss several games. Brees struggled in New Orleans’ 26-19 loss to Tampa Bay. Saints coach Sean Payton says they don’t know yet if Brees will miss any time…:

The Saints 26-19 loss to Tampa Bay was their sixth straight regular season defeat in the Superdome. It wasn’t a great performance as New Orleans fumbled five times and they were penalized ten times for 115 yards. Coach Sean Payton has more examples of bad play…

And there’s concerns about quarterback Drew Brees throwing shoulder. Brees took a big hit in the first half and admitted it affected a few of his throws. Payton said today it’s too early to tell if Brees will play this Sunday against Carolina. A report from the NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport says sources within the team are concerned Brees could miss several games.

After his career-high 228 yard and three touchdown performance against Auburn, LSU running back Leonard Fournette is considered a favorite to win the Heisman after three weeks of the college football season. But Fournette says he’s not thinking about postseason awards…

Fournette was named the co-offensive player of the week in the SEC. Offensive tackle Vadal Alexander was named the SEC Offensive lineman of the week as he helped the Tigers rack up 485 total yards of offense in the win over Auburn.

And the SEC announced today that LSU’s next home game against Eastern Michigan will kick-off at 6 PM on October third.

There is some sad news to report involving the LSU football program. Former reserve tight end Tyler Edwards was found dead over the weekend in his car. Authorities in Monroe say he died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.He was 26-years-old.

The Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office arrests a man who is accused of putting his phone underneath the door of a fitting room at a department store in Galliano and taking pictures. Spokesman Brennan Matherne says 52-year-old Aaron Merritt is charged with one felony count of video voyeurism. He says this is a pathetic crime…:

Saints coach Sean Payton says quarterback Drew Brees was “hindered” by a big hit in the loss to Tampa Bay Sunday in The Dome. But when asked if Brees would miss any time, Payton said it’s too early to discuss. He says they will watch how the QB is feeling and see where’s he at on Wednesday. The Saints play the Panthers this weekend.

LSU has announced a 6 p.m. kickoff time for their upcoming Oct. 3 non-conference meeting with Eastern Michigan in Tiger Stadium.

Matherne says with the help of surveillance video and an anonymous Crime Stoppers tip, they were able to identify and arrest Merritt. State Police say they’ve snatched up about a half a million dollars in cocaine and an airplane in Terrebonne Parish. They say in a joint effort by several law enforcement agencies, 29-year-old John Crow of Brownsville, Texas was met by agents at his plane at the Thibodaux Municipal airport and he was acting extremely nervous. Troopers say 34 pounds of cocaine was found in Crow’s luggage. The drugs, cash and the plane was seized and Crow was sent to jail.

According to the latest U.S. Census data, Louisiana had the third highest rate of poverty in the country for 2014, just below 20 percent. Jan Moller, Director of the Louisiana Budget Project, says he hopes the gubernatorial candidates will create plans to reduce poverty in the state because it’s often a topic that gets swept under the rug:

Almost 897-thosuand of Louisiana residents lived below the poverty line, which is 24-thousand dollars for a family of four. Moller says we have a lot of work to do to create an economy that works for everybody.

Convicted serial killer Derrick Todd Lee has lost his latest appeal to the Louisiana Supreme Court of his death sentence in the 2002 death of LSU student Charlotte Murray Pace in Baton Rouge. Lee was arguing the district court didn’t give enough funding for adequate DNA testing. That and other arguments were rejected by the high court. Lee is convicted of killing two women and is linked to five other murders.

Louisiana Tech is recovering from an exhausting triple-overtime loss to Kansas State on Saturday. A 31-yard touchdown pass on 3rd and 16 is what ended up beating the Bulldogs. Tech is now 1-and-2 on the season and will face Conference USA foe F-I-U this Saturday.

After taking last Saturday off, UL Lafayette and ULM are back in action this weeknd. The Cajuns will host Akron, while the Warhawks will take on a Crimson Tide club that’s feeling salty after losing to Ole Miss.

Northwestern State lost 62-13 to Mississippi State last weekend, but the Demons get back into Southland play this Saturday as Northwestern will host Central Arkansas.

McNeese State is 2-0 in the league after beating Stephen F Austin 28-14. Quarterback Daniel Sams was really productive as he rushed for 164 yards and a touchdown and he threw for 134 yards and another score. McNeese this Saturday will host Mississippi College.

The Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s office says a 52-year-old man is under arrest after he was caught taking pictures of a woman who was in a fitting room at a department store. They say Aaron Merrit is charged with one count of video voyeurism. Investigators say the woman saw Merrit taking pictures of her as she was undressing then she contacted authorities. A tip to Crime Stoppers is how they were able to identify the suspect.

The Louisiana Workforce Commission says the number of people employed in mining and logging, which includes the oil sector, is at its lowest level since December 2005. But LWC Executive Director Curt Eysink says overall, Louisiana added more jobs than in the prior year because of an industrial construction boom happening across south Louisiana. He says the state has nearly 25-thousand more workers than in August 2014…:

There are 46-thousand people employed in the oil sector of the state’s economy, a decline of 78-hundred over the last year. Eysink says you can blame the low price of oil and they are going to watch closely how that impacts the workforce if crude remains so depressed.

State Police say an early morning crash in Catahoula Parish claimed the life of a Wisner man. They believe 31-year-old Joe Graves III was speeding on Highway 913 when he ran off the road and crashed into a large tree. Investigators found Graves III was not wearing a seat belt and he was pronounced dead on the scene.
