Edwards backed New Orleans Democrat Walt Leger as Speaker of the House. It was learned this week that former Governor Bobby Jindal approved millions of dollars worth of pay raises for state employees in his final days in office. Alford says these pay hikes caught the new administration off guard…

He says some departments saw a 4-percent merit based pay hike in Jindal’s final days and some were retroactive. Alford says Retired Air Force Col. Rob Maness is ready to jump into the US Senate race. He says Maness joining what’s expected to by a heavy Republican field of candidates puts an interesting twist on November’s primary… (Maness is expected to officially announce his candidacy on January 27th.)

Walmart announced today the company will be closing 269 stores worldwide, including 8 in Louisiana. LSU Marketing Professor Dan Rice says Walmart is trying to cut out the stores where they aren’t as profitable, like Walmart Express. He says the company has realized they need to start being smart about where they’re spending their money.

Eight Louisiana stores will be closing. Rice says 95% of the Walmart stores closing have another store within 10 miles in the United States.

Rice says the company hopes the employees losing their jobs at a closing location can be placed in another store. He says Walmart still wants to keep their loyal customers.

Palermo says this violated the LHSAA constitution…

LHSAA Executive Director Eddie Bonine says as of now, football playoffs are going back to five championships. The LHSAA only has a couple of weeks to come up with a plan before their annual convention which begins on the 27th. Palermo finds this announcement very startling…

Another teacher from Destrehan High School is under arrest for allegedly having sex with one of her female students who was 16 when the relationship started. St. Charles Parish Sheriff Greg Champagne says they booked 26-year-old Kimberly Naquin with carnal knowledge of a juvenile and prohibited sexual conduct between educator and student…:

Champagne says the information that the student and the teacher may have been having a sexual relationship came from a family member of the student. Most of the encounters took place at Naquin’s home in Kenner — but also at Destrehan High and at a home in Destrehan. Champagne says Naquin’s bond is set at $75,000, with several conditions…:

Naquin is the daughter of the St. Charles Parish School Board president. Kenner Police said they have a warrant for Naquin on 10 counts of felony carnal knowledge of a juvenile. Two other Destrehan teachers still have cases pending in Jefferson Parish where they allegedly had three-way sexual encounter with a 16-year-old male student. Champagne says these cases are bewildering…:

A Mississippi man has been arrested for aggravated animal cruelty after posting of Facebook a picture of a dog he allegedly shot and killed in Washington Parish. Brent Jones with the Sheriff’s Office says during the investigation they discovered the shooting happened in Clifton, Louisiana. He says Todd Hammond was questioned after they received multiple tips and officers saw his online post.

He says Hammond was also given a citation for not having a Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries issued hunting license. He says they are always watching for incriminating online posts.

The Louisiana High School Athletic Association will no longer divide its playoffs into divisions for public and private schools. They say that the return to the traditional 1A-through-5A format comes after a legal review found that the 2013 decision violated the organization’s constitution.

The vote should have been done by the committee, not the school principals. Director Eddie Bonine says as of now, football playoffs are going back to 5 championships.

The University of Texas at San Antonio officially announced on Twitter this morning that Frank Wilson, the long-time LSU recruiting coordinator and running backs coach, is now going to be the new coach at UTSA. It’s reported that Wilson will make $750,000 as the Roadrunners head coach, which is a $75,000 increase from his LSU salary. Wilson is the second LSU coach to leave this off-season. Defensive coordinator Kevin Steele made a lateral move to Auburn last month and has since been replaced by Dave Aranda.

LSU announced today that assistant baseball coach Will Davis will become the new head coach at Lamar after the upcoming season. He’s moving into the spot being vacated by Lamar’s legendary head coach Jim. Gilligan who announced in September that the 2016 season would be his last at the Cardnials program. Coach Paul Mainieri said he couldn’t be happier for Davis.

UL-Lafayette coach Mark Hudspeth announced senior Jalen Nixon will officially be moved to running back this season. This means sophomore Jordan Davis and redshirt freshman Chris Weaver will compete for the starting QB job.

Today is Saints Quarterback Drew Brees 37th birthday. General Manager Mickey Loomis said Thursday that Brees would remain the quarterback and that they would figure out his contract in the coming weeks.

Louisiana’s top football recruit in 2017, Dylan Moses, is transferring from U-High in Baton Rouge to IMG Academy in Florida. The one-time LSU commitment made the announcement on Twitter saying it was the toughest decision of his life.

A recent LSU poll shows 66-percent of respondents want to see a broad range of matters addressed in the expected special legislative session such as education, jobs, and health care. Public Policy Research Lab Director Michael Henderson says these results show residents are ready to have these issues addressed, but it will likely have to wait until a later session. He says Governor Edwards and the legislature are going to have to do the work and explain it to voters…

The Governor is expected to call a special session in February to address the state’s budgetary challenges.

The St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office has arrested a teacher from Destrehan High School accused of having sex with a student. Kimberly Naquin, a geography teacher, is charged with carnal knowledge of a juvenile, felony prohibited sexual conduct between educator and student, and fugitive from another agency. Kenner Police have an arrest warrant out for Naquin for 10 counts of felony carnal knowledge of a juvenile.

A New Orleans federal court is considering a plea by four groups seeking to stop the removal of Confederate monuments in the city. The New Orleans City Council voted 6-1 to remove the statues in December. Legal analyst Chick Foret says one of the lawyers for the city told US District Judge Carl Barbier that they are prepared to move forward with the plan, but they need a new general contractor…

During his season ending news conference, New Orleans Saints general manager Mickey Loomis said that Drew Brees will remain the team’s quarterback. In fact, Loomis chuckled at the notion that Brees would be going anywhere. Brees is scheduled to count $30 million dollars against the Saints salary cap in 2016.

While in Baton Rouge, President Barack Obama said that Democratic Governor John Bel Edwards win in Louisiana’s gubernatoirial election proves elections do matter. Mr. Obama said Edwards has already proven he will be a leader that isn’t afraid to make big decisions…

The Justice Department announces that a former Mamou police chief has been sentenced to one year and one day in federal prison after using a stun gun on an inmate without provocation. Prosecutors say 44-year-old Robert McGee administered a five second shock to inmate, George Gradney, Jr., who was posing no threat at the time. McGee pleaded guilty in October to civil rights charges.

ULM football coach Matt Viator has made four new hires. Defensive backs coach Chris Hampton, wide receivers coach Tim Leger, and defensive line coach Manny Michel all follow Viator to ULM from McNeese State, while offensive line coach Rob Sale joins the staff after one season in the SEC at Georgia.

It’s reported that Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Doug Pederson will become the new head coach for the Philadelphia Eagles. Pederson was a former quarterback at ULM and coached at Calvary Baptist High School in Shreveport. With Kansas City in the middle of a playoff run, an official announcement cannot be made until the Chiefs season is officially over.
