The Republican Party of Louisiana is trying to raise money to run a commercial with statements Governor John Bel Edwards made during his campaign saying he wouldn’t raise taxes. Executive Director Jason Dore says says with oil prices falling and the state entering a recession, now is not the time to raise taxes on Louisiana residents…:

The 30 second ad, titled “Don’t Raise Taxes,” was released on Sunday. The state Democratic Party says this is a dirty tactic by the GOP, and the cuts they’d like to see to fill the state’s current year approximate $940 million dollar budget hole are not realistic.

The teacher out of Iberville Parish who is accused of having sex with students, has reportedly pleaded no contest to all charges this morning. Keavin Keith was indicted in 2015 on five counts of felony carnal knowledge and 30 counts of prohibited sexual conduct between an educator and a student. Authorities say Keith fathered a child with one of the students.

A former Department of Children and Family Services case worker is facing several criminal charges including malfeasance in office for allegedly falsifying reports indicating she’d checked on foster children when she hadn’t. Inspector General Stephen Street says the suspect is 49-year-old Kimberly Lee…:

In a statement, DCFS says they have zero tolerance for any employee who puts children at risk or purposefully deceives the Department by falsifying documents.

Former Saints player Darren Sharper has reportedly got a new plea hearing set on the case alleging he drugged and raped several women. Sharper had entered a global plea deal in states last year admitting guilt in exchange for 9-years in prison, but new court filings lead experts to believe that deal is off. The new trial date is set for May 16th.

The Edwards Administration has started detailing tax proposals that will be debated during the special session. After day two, about $60 million dollars in cuts have been made to help with the estimated more than $940 million hole in the budget that ends June 30th. $38 million was approved by the Joint Legislative Committee on the Budget Monday, adding to reductions already made by Governor John Bel Edwards.

After day two of the special legislative session, about $60 million dollars in cuts have been made to help with the estimated more than $940 million hole in the budget that ends June 30th. $38 million was approved by the Joint Legislative committee on the Budget Monday, adding to reductions already made by Governor John Bel Edwards.

TOPS has been called into question because of the state’s budget issues, and financial experts are urging parents to prepare in case the scholarship program isn’t funded moving forward. Certified financial planner Anne Osestriecher says students may also need to consider what they can do to help finance their education…:

In college hoops, the performance by LSU of late is causing outsiders to take notice. ESPN’s Joe Lunardi, one of the most respected bracketologists, moved the Tigers up to a NO. 7 seed in his NCAA tournament bracket posted Monday. CBSSports.com’s Jerry Palm has LSU as one of the last four teams in the field to earn a No. 11 seed, following the performance of the Tigers in the win over Texas A&M over the weekend. LSU hosts Alabama tomorrow night.

In baseball…LSU right-hander Jesse Stallins has been named to the Stopper of the Year watch list as the Colfax native had 12 saves last season. McNeese State’s Collin Kober is also on that list. Kober was second in the Southland last season with nine saves.

Curtis Johnson, who was fired as Tulane coach in November after four seasons with the Green Wave, has been hired as the new wide receivers coach for the chicago Bears. Johnson coached wide receivers for the Saints for 6 years.

Men’s basketball Scores elsewhere around the state Monday — UNO fell to Texas A&M Corpus Christi 65-57.

Southeasterm was able to hold on in overtime to get the 79-76 win over McNeese State. Zay Jackson had 23 points, seven rebounds and five assists for the Lions.

Grambling State loses to Texas Southern in Houston 79-72 Monday night.

Southern put up its highest point total of the season in the 97-64 victory over Mississippi Valley State in Baton Rouge.

Nola.com is reporting that a judge in New Orleans set a May 16th trial date for former Saints player Darren Sharper who is facing drug and rape conspiracy charges. Sharper pleaded guilty in a “global deal” last year, but earlier this month court documents made it look like negotiations had gone back to the drawing board.

 Street says over a period of a year, between July of 2013 and August of 2014, Lee falsified documents on 20 separate occasions. He says after being interviewed by investigators, she admitted to falsifying the reports.

Severe storms moved across the state today causing some minor damage in Alexandria. Police say strong winds caused to damage to a car wash and a Pizza Hut, injuring two employees inside the restaurant. Authorities say the injuries were not serious. In parts of south Louisiana there were reports of hail.

 

A published report says Nicholls State could possibly close its doors for 12 days because of a lack of state funds. But Nicholls president, Doctor Bruce Murphy, says closing the campus for several days is the last option they would take. University of Louisiana System president, Doctor Dan Reneau says depending on how big the cuts are in state funding, mid-year closures could occur as some universities. But Appel warns higher ed leaders that these kinds of threats could become a “self fulfilling prophecy”…

The Edwards Administration began detailing today its tax proposals that will be debated during the special session. State Department of Revenue Secretary Kimberly Robinson says the additional penny on the state sales tax would only be temporary, until the deficit is resolved.

Today the Edwards Administration began detailing its tax proposals that will be debated during the special session. Governor Edwards recommends a combination of budget cuts and revenue raising actions as a way to solve the state’s budget deficit. State Department of Revenue Secretary Kimberly Robinson spoke to the House Ways and Means Committee about a proposed 1-cent state sales tax increase.

CUT 7 (09) “FY-17″

Robinson said the so-called “clean penny tax” would not apply to areas of exemption including groceries, residential utilities, prescription medications and gas.

As part of Governor Edwards plan to fix the state budget, he’s proposing roughly $160 million dollars in cuts. Edwards spoke with reporters following his opening remarks to lawmakers Sunday and said he’s leaving everything on the table…:

The current budget deficit is $957 million.

Former state lawmaker Troy Hebert provided suggestions on how to control government spending in a letter to lawmakers Hebert says it is not fair to taxpayers for state workers to be paid for more work than they do. He believes using time clocks would resolve this issues.

Hebert’s other suggestions include stopping across-the-board cuts and changing state supervisor-to-worker ratios.

A published report says Nicholls State is considering closing its doors for 12 days because of a lack of state funds. Metairie Senator Conrad Appel is upset to see a headline that Nicholls plans to close, when that’s not the case…

Evangel Christian wide receiver Johnathan Jones has de-committed from Louisiana Tech. In a post on social media, Jones said recent political events led to his decision. Jones is referring to last week’s comment by Governor John Bel Edwards, who said severe budget cuts could result in college campuses closing this spring, meaning no football in the fall.
