As you gather around the table to celebrate with a Thanksgiving Meal today, the State Fire Marshal reminds you to practice cooking safety. Jeff Palermo has more.

In Jefferson Davis Parish, State Police are investigating a shooting that involved a Sheriff’s Office Deputy. The shooting happened Wednesday evening when officers responded to a residence in Lacassine and they encountered 56-year old Jeffery Smiley with a weapon. Police say he refused to drop his weapon and at least one officer discharged his gun striking Smiley. Smiley was transported to a local hospital.

In the south, some people opt to deep fry their turkey for Thanksgiving, but if you aren’t familiar with the practice it can be extremely dangerous and it has been known to cause severe burns and house fires. State Fire Marshal Butch Browning says if the turkey is not defrosted completely and there’s an excessive amount of grease in the fryer, the combination can be deadly.

Cut 8 (12) “…explosive fire”

Browning recommends that you always have a working fire extinguisher on hand and never use water to put out a grease fire. Also, do not allow children around when deep-frying a turkey.

Your pets may be want to enjoy your leftovers, today, Louisiana SPCA spokesperson Alicia Vial says watch out for the sugar content, but a small serving of cranberry sauce should be okay.

Cut 4 (10) “…any pet diet.”

Potatoes are great, but be careful of the added ingredients used to make mashed potatoes. A small serving of canned pumpkin should be okay as well.
