Fort Johnson is once again Fort Polk. The state’s largest military base was rededicated in a ceremony Friday morning. Its new namesake is General James H. Polk. His son, James H. Polk the Third, told those gathered that his father was a true hero, not only to the country, but to his family.

The LSU football team added two more front office members. The Tigers hired Ohio State Director of Player Personnel Sam Petitto to be the team’s Director of Scouting and Personnel Strategy. The Amite-native spent nearly a decade under Nick Saban at Alabama, where he annually helped orchestrate top recruiting classes. New Orleans native Jeff Martin is returning to LSU as the Executive Director of Player Personnel after serving as USC’s Director of Scouting and relations.

ESPN analyst Kiley McDaniel is still mocking LSU ace Kade Anderson to go first overall in the MLB draft. Anderson’s pitching partner, right-hander Anthony Eyanson, is another top-50 prospect. The UC San Diego transfer’s stock skyrocketed after a dominant season in Baton Rouge, and D1 Baseball analyst Aaron Fitt says it might not be done rising.

LSU commit Raegan Ricken pulled his name from the MLB Draft. The 6-foot-5 right-handed pitcher is ESPN’s 121st-ranked prospect in the draft and Perfect Game’s 69th-ranked high schooler in the class.

Louisiana Tech announced its Conference USA basketball schedule. The Bulldogs will open league play at home December 29 versus UTEP, and close the season with back-to-back road games at Liberty March 5 and Delaware March 7.

Public viewing and wake will be Saturday 10 to 3 and the celebration of life will be Sunday evening at 6. Swaggart family spokesperson Megan Kelly says the Swaggart family has been overwhelmed by the personal messages and stories they’ve received.

Those waiting for a Bucee’s in the Lafayette area are going to need patience because the construction is paused and you can blame it on the rain at least partially. The general contractor, Triton Construction says the delay is due to design delays and poor weather conditions. No date for resuming construction has been announced but when complete the travel center is expected to create 150 jobs with pay starting a $17 per hour.

Pinsonat expects TV ads to begin after Labor Day weekend.

A public viewing and wake is Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and a celebration of life service is Sunday evening at 6:00. Swaggart family spokesperson Megan Kelly says SonLife Broadcasting Network will also air the funderal. She says the celebration of life will be a combination of Swaggart’s life as a televangelist.

They made it official in Vernon Parish Friday morning – Fort Johnson is now Fort Polk once again but not after Confederate General Leonidas Polk. The new name honors General James H. Polk who served in WWII and the Korean War.  At the renaming ceremony, Polk’s son, James H. Polk the Third paid tribute to Sergeant William Henry Johnson whose name graced the Fort between the two Polks.

The Army announced during the ceremony that on July 24th, its installation post exchange will be dedicated as the Sergeant William Henry Johnson Exchange.

Today is the final day of qualifying for the October 11th election in Orleans Parish, and there had been speculation as to whether Sheriff Susan Hutson would seek a second term. She has confirmed that she will indeed do so. Hutson had suspended her campaign following the May jailbreak, in which ten inmates escaped and one remains on the loose. Hutson, however, faces at least three challengers.

LSU baseball commit Raegan Ricken will make it to campus. The 6-foot-5 right-hander out of California pulled his name from this weekend’s MLB Draft. Perfect Game ranks Ricken as the No. 69 high school prospect, and ESPN has him 121st among all draft-eligible players.

One Tiger who certainly will be heading to pro ball is pitcher Kade Anderson. After a season where he led the nation in strikeouts and earned Most Outstanding Player at the College World Series, D1 Baseball analyst Aaron Fitt expects him to go first overall. He says Anderson is already the best college pitcher.

United Airlines is adding two new flights to the Baton Rouge Metropolitan Airport for LSU fans this season. The airline will fly direct to Birmingham November 7 ahead of the Tigers’ matchup with Alabama and to Benton, Arkansas November 14 when the team faces off against the Razorbacks. Flights will depart the Friday before the games and return Sunday.

The Pelicans signed lockdown defender Her Jones to a three-year, 68-million-dollar contract extension. The 26-year-old is now under contract for five years with a player option in 2029.

New Orleans lost their Summer League Debut to the Timberwolves yesterday 98-to-91. First-round duo Jeremiah Fears and Derik Queen had 14 and 13 points, but both rookies posted seven turnovers in 27 minutes.

LSU has the 6th-ranked recruiting class in the country, according to On3, after landing a pair of defensive line commits yesterday. U High five-star and top-ranked athlete Lamar Brown announced his commitment in a heated recruiting battle versus Texas A&M. Three-star edge rusher DeAnthony Lafayette chose the Tigers over Miami and Oklahoma.

One of the biggest conversations coming out of the tax cuts and spending bill that President Trump just signed is the fate of rural hospitals. Democrats have been sounding the alarm, saying that 33 of them across the state will close as a result of cuts to Medicaid. Rustin Loyd, a nurse from Hammond and a former hospital administrator, says those closures will cost lives.

But Mark Ballard, who covered the hearings on Capitol Hill for The Advocate, told Jim Engster on Talk Louisiana that it’s important to note that the Medicaid cuts don’t happen for another two to three years, and hospitals are hoping they can get Congress to reconsider those cuts by then. If they can’t, only then would the effects of those cuts be felt.

Furthermore, the bill also sets up a 50-billion-dollar fund to help struggling rural hospitals.

The tax and spending bill will mean more money for Louisiana for coastal protection and restoration projects. Neal McMillan, the director of federal affairs of the Louisiana Department of Energy and Natural Resources, says Louisiana will get an additional 50-million dollars a year.
